Melee: good to start, but to finish?

When I replay a game, I often use melee early because it's actually easier to take down an enemy. I usually end up going to guns because I've noticed melee options are... well, lacking, frankly.

I'm curious to know if this is a skill one can enhance in the game to the point a police baton is a leathal weapon at 100.

Can this level allow us to punch a deathclaw to death, or do I need one of the few melee weapons lying about?

I plan on grabbing Fisto! once I grab ye ol' sniper from Arkansas, but I want to be more of a melee player, sniping only when the odds are heavily stacked against me (to maim, not kill).

I'm also curious how this works against power armor.

Advice would be appreciated.
