Melee, heavy guns or both?

I like the idea of a heavy guns build but there are a few posts mentioning the problems of this early on which makes sense, has any one had any success?

I played melee weapons and explosives in fo3. I also like direct melee builds, but was not sure how well this would work with the new power armour fuel variable?

Maybe both is a good idea as it means early on melee would make thins easier, but would choosing both not spread perks a bit too far?

It would be good to here from someone who has played one of these variants. What sort special and perks did you use?

I haven't tried much of the heavy weapons yet due to ammo shortage.

But I found in other fallouts that a melee/heavy gun build did good. The weak stuff I just killed with melee while bug bad guys got a rocket to the face.

Fallout 4 seems to support the fact that early on you can use all the weapons. Once you start getting the perks then you dmg with one or two types will go up and that's pretty much all you'll use.

And certain creatures are just easier to fight with certain weapons.
Shotguns on ghouls is good. They are pretty fast so with melee its hard to block and you'll get smacked down.
Against mirelurks I found melee to be awesome. They ate slow and its was to block their attacks a hit back.
Raiders....still way easier to just snipe them in the head.

In terms of spreading your perks to thin- I noticed that if you focus on the damage/ toughness perks and ignore the others then the game actually becomes pretty easy even on survival.

I'm 1 or 2 hitting mobs with my bladed tire iron at level 5.

Heavy guns can be a bit troublesome, the Junk Jet is a decent way to have a heavy weapon thats somewhat easy to feed ammo for.

How do you find melee? Do you always need the power armour to survive without sneak?

Not at all, but you need some endurance to get lifegiver and the damage resistance thingy, also Adamantium skeleton is not a bad idea. I would also recommend Reflector (energy resistance) in perception, but it requires 7 to reach and its abit much. Also chems ofc to keep yourself alive and to dispatch your enemies quick. Melee is quite fun without vats and sneaking, but it takes some getting used to and the proper build. Also a combination of melee and heavy guns works quite well. Melee in power armor is very overpowered though, but way brutal and fun.

I usually dont use either as i hate to carry around a limited amount of heavy weapons. Strength supports both though. I dont have any damage in a certain weapon type perks and I do just fine. I do rely on chems though when the going gets tough. I'd like other perks but dont need them. Crafting, locks and hacking seem necessary but there's enough stuff lying around where i dont have lockpicking and seem ok with it. You could even get away without crafting if you choose. Going to want that jetpack though.

To play melee you need to use drugs all the time. Jet, Med X, Psycho, those chemist 1 drugs that increase damage and AP regeneration, cook food and stimpacks. Jet is easy to make and makes tough fights easier
