melee weapon impact

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:43 am

It has always bothered me while slashing an opponent that the only sign of impact is the sound (besides occasional staggering of opponents with special attacks)... Im betting at very least we'll be seeing an upgraded physics system, but Id love to be able to stagger opponents to the point where they are falling over, put dents in armor, injure limbs, and be able to finish opponents while they're down. Maybe even dismemberment of limbs and decapitation courtesy of fallout? (more realistic dismemberment of course).

Your thoughts or ideas for melee impact improvements?

I agree, there was no sense of....contact.....in first person it was as if your sword always passed just before the enemy and never making contact. and in third person it goes...through them....while not going through them...weird.

That's sadistic.

I love it.

It is awesome until you get stagger locked by the 3 goons attacking you.

Diddo! I hope melee can be similar to the (now defunct) Elveon trailer. The sparing they did in that video is close to what I want to see in Skyrim. There was a sense of real sword-play there.

Just took a look at Elveon, not bad not bad. what had me was how the enemies died differently. not too dramatic, but satisfying.

oh and a nice stabbing move where you run your blade through the opponents abdomen and then kick them in the chest as you struggle to pull the blade back out would be pretty sweet...

merry christmas everyone =P

Yeah, the combat there looks really nice. Just as I want it :D
Except there should be no "swing marks" in the air.

I agree with everything, including the limb dismemberment. And on that note, Merry Christmas!

I'd definitely like to see damage inflicted on armour/cloth. Slashing or tearing for example.

Also, if there could be burn/electric/ice impacts that'd be great too :D

Yes. Destructive environment. Flammable environment would be awesome too... considering we have flame-breathing dragons.

Destructive only to an extent though. I don't want to see holes blown in the side of walls (pretty sure game mechanics of inside/outside cells would prevent this anyway). However, taking down small trees with a fireball would be cool.

Farcry 2 did this very well with fire on the environment.

I agree with everything. Swords and axes etc. are sharp, so your opponents shouldn't always stay intact like in Oblivion.

Hm, that makes me think of something else. Relevant to your post, but irrelevant to this thread.
Anyway, what I'm thinking of is to not to seperate inside/exterior cells. I mean, that seperation is basically (from the start) to cut down on the FPS hits. But most games, if not all by now, have no seperation from this. Maybe this could have its own thread though.
And it's kind of late to discuss, I mean... if Bethesda has implemented it, it would have been implemented from the start, and not now. So it's not like anything would change.

I like the idea of tearing cloth and armor, and also having blood dripping from those areas. It would really add to the realism and grittiness of a battle

Armor damage (dents) like car damage in racing games? I like the idea. :) Have more good reasons to use those armorer hammers and polish up the gear (knocking the dents out of them).
