melee with bows

with a bow in close qaurters has been confirmed, but what will it be like? and will it be diffrent with diffrent bows?

Personaly i would love to see you taking an arrow and punching it through someones throat before ripping it out to use with the bow.

also if a bow had decorative spikes on these could be used to slash at someones face or exposed flesh

Haven't heard that either. Also considering Bethesda is aiming for low-fantasy, I don't see hope in seeing unusual design for bows, and normal bows typically break when hit against, say, metal armour.

If it's in, I don't imagine it would be particularly useful for dealing damage in the way you described. More like knocking them back, giving you time to retreat a bit and continue shooting at them. If bows made effective melee weapons, why would anyone use swords?

I just expect a standard push or kick. Maybe a perk will allow a small amount of damage to be delth with bashing or to use an arrow instead of your hand, but I wouldn't expect to much.

Edit: Bottom of the third paragraph, its in.

I think its awsome enough to fire an arrow into someone, then when they get close, bash them away, quickly load another arrow and fire it into them again. Reminds me of deadly reflex for oblivion...

I'm sure it will be similar to the shield bash, and bow variation probably won't play a major role.

Sounds good for dedicated archers who don't like backup weapons. I only wonder if NPCs will be able to do the "bow bash" as well. Could be useful to add dynamics to combat with enemy archers.

No archer would ever use his bow in this purpose. why? it would break (unless its made of a metal, which makes no sense cus a bow wouldn't work that way.).

I saw someone block a small wooden pole with his bow once and the bow snapped in half. Bows were never intended to block or bash anything as they are quite fragile and under tension. Applying force to the wrong side would cause it to snap instantly.

So in my opinion this is one of the things they could have done without.

It doesn't actually say anything about bashin with the bow it just says you can bash while you have one out. Maybe by bash they mean a kick or a quick smack to the head (after all you only need to have 2 hands on a bow when firing it.

Its just said that we can exicute a bash move while holding a bow. It could be anything from a kick to a two handed push to wacking the enemy with the bow. I think its a good thing such a thing was included either way its implemented. One shot, then kick enemy down, and finish it with a point blank kill shot sounds pretty cool to me.

Yes I do like the sound of that, also very usefull if you run out of arrows to knock them back thus giving you a chance to escape.

The way its says.......'you can still execute a bash move....' says to me that you can execute this move with any weapon, not just the bow.

saying it this way suggests that general concesus would have been that you cant use the bash move with a bow.

It would have said........with the bow you can execute a bash move........ if it was specific to the bow.

but thats IMO still a great feature if the backpeddling has been slowed down.

Well, let's see. They implemented bashing, and took out running backwards. So, I'd think that they did that for a) looking ridiculous, b, being a cheap tactic, and c) forcing one to switch to his back-up weapons. I think no, they wouldn't have bow-bashing.

I like the idea. Depending on how it is implemented will determine the level of awesome. I think it should be something like an opposed strength test(depending on what stats are in) The degree of success you get determines the level of stagger. You should be able to fling back small creatures but barely make a giant flinch. I kind of assume it is a kick or a shoulder slam, not actually whacking people with the bow.

I take it you bash a lot of bows on metal armor to see if they break

It sure sounds cool I must admit. The points others are making about the fragileness of bows I know little about. I have owned and shot re-curve bows, and they are pretty hardy pieces of equipment, but that doesn't mean I tested them in war (by bashing somebodies face in).

I can say without a doubt that the bow I owned, which was made of wood, could have handled a few bashes without breaking even when it was strung. But that doesn't mean it would last say 100 bashes or 1000, the kind of durability you would look for if that was going to be a regular activity.

Its not unrealistic in the elder scrolls compared to real life. All the bows are metal cored/backed.
