Meloncholy piano songs

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 8:55 pm

I'm looking for some sad or morose piano songs. But they don't have to be just piano, they can be other instruments too like violin, like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcXXpssBFVM. Things that fit that style of music.

A start I guess? =)

A lot of soundtracks are probably going to be what you'll likely end up with, be them from films, games, etc. Sure, there are musicians out there who do nothing but put out piano/string/etc. instrumental records, too, but I've never been to fond of them. In any case, there is a lot of music like what your looking for to be found throughout soundtracks. Ex.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUgC6215Gko, Clint Mansell, The Fountain.

I know some stuff.

That's all for the moment. Haven't had a need for much melancholy piano music for a while so I don't have many on hand.

Edit: Oh! I just remembered another one from Shawshank Redemption!

I guess they are truly "sad" - more bittersweet.

Definitely this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0oLYCdoDC8

Not sure if this is the actual story behind the recording but I'd like to think it's true:

"Billy Strayhorn had just died. Duke & his men go into? the studio to record some of Billy's forgotten scores. The session is over. The band is packing. Duke goes back to the piano, starts to play "Lotus Blossom" all by himself. Harry Carney unpacks his baritone and joins the Duke for the 2nd chorus. The mikes were on, someone looks on and hits the REC buttton. The tapes roll. This is how this was recorded."

This song always gets me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yef2yiFPiuI The other movements of this piece are also lovely, though I prefer the more well-known orchestral version a bit.

Here to display my severe lack of musical knowledge by reposting yet another song from a video game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdgPzyNbUQk from Persona 3.

Persona 4 has some good ones as well:

A few of my favorite songs are melancholy piano pieces, as it so happens.

Hell yes. I don't think it can be topped.
Michael Nyman has some good http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4S7DmnjWTSk and also http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtaxmLmsPJU from Kaiba OST is unbearably melancholic.
