Memorable Moments?

Well, when something that was seen as beneficial in Morrowind was removed or skewed via mechanics in Oblivion, then it seems perfectly logical and reasonable to deride Oblivion in that context.

I disagree, especially because it's vague what made it a mountain to climb, if that was beneficial, and whether that was removed, and why that was bad.

So you'll say it would not be inappropriate if every time I praise Oblivion, I would take a dump on Morrowind? I don't go around subsequently deriding things as a praise other things, because it's not needed in order to bring the point across.

Unless of course the point was to deride, but I simply needed an excuse so I throw in a praise as well.

Had he simply stated:
"Feeling a sense of accomplishment never felt before from a game by completing Morrowind's MQ."

It would tell just as much.

EDIT: In fact, I wouldn't even go so far as to call it derision. It's simply acknowledging that something beloved or memorable was not present or was done to the opposite effect in other titles.

I disagree, I would call it an unnecessary comparison since it doesn't add to the praise, in any way other then beg the question if the post was written to praise Morrowind, or just to deride Oblivion.

Being too scared to do an Oblivion gate. Took me about 5 hours to complete the first oblivion gate at Kvatch because I thought it was mandatory. Scared the life out of me, too. And for about 6 months I never went near an oblivion gate.

The first time I ran into a cliff racer in Ald-Rhun. I was Level 1 at the time, and was really svckish. I remember hiding out underneath the Temple overhang and being so scared. I wasted all my ranged weapons (bows, throwing knives, etc) and not even hurting it. I finally killed it after a half-hour of running, jumping, swinging, then going back to hiding. I was so psyched when I finally killed it.

A similar thing happened with Netches, before I knew that they weren't hostile. I avoided them every time I saw them.

It happened again in Seyda Neen with slaughterfish. I was afraid of the water for so long.

I also remember the first time I finally was brave enough to go to Arkingtahand, my first Dwemer ruin. It felt so good.

Ahhh, I miss the old days, when everything felt new to me.

As others have mentioned, the shot after emerging from the sewers in Oblivion is just amazing. Moving from that confined, claustrophobic space to the vastness of Oblivion's overworld is, I think, one of the defining moments of this generation of gaming.

Morrowind provided some pretty memorable moments too, though. Most of them were generated whilst playing the game with my friend and griefing various townspeople ad infinitum. Good times.

I agree with emerging from the sewers. Oblivion was my first Elder Scrolls game and the sight was amazing when I first left the sewers.

I think the sewers are the most detailed part of the game, I like the stone work and grunge there. It looks nice and detailed. Then you go outside and think "oh... is that it?".

There are some good ones in here to be sure. However I have experienced many of the ones posted already, and while they are all good I think it would be wise to add a little variety to the mix- perhaps you shall all agree. I shall add some that are more difficult to replicate. Not all are so unique but should be shared anyways. i think if more people had the sort of experiences I have had with both Morrowind and Oblivion they would praise both for their brilliance as two awesome RPG's. More to follow later- some Morrowind specific ones especially.

#1. TES IV Oblivion:

The Forester.

The fog lay thick on the High Jerall range, as the Dark Elven Adventurer Celedrin slowly trudged along the winding paths and rickety bridges so characteristic of this portion of Cyrodiil. He was walking- something few adventurers have ever been known to do, but on this particular day no adventure pulled at his heart more then the call of the wild, and the serenity of nature. Many deer bolted as he drew within range, but he gave no pursuit.he just kept walking along.
As always Tamriel can be full of Danger, thus he would run from the onslaught of wolves and other beasts, until his pursuers tired of the chase. They would be an easy kill to be sure, but he cared little for combat on this day. However it happened that once a wolf chased him past an icy Elven Ruin, and there he espied a forester. Foresters are perhaps the most intriguing characters in all of Cyrodiil, the protectors of the forest these members of the Imperial legion are solitary and seldom seen. In the end the wolf proved too much of an annoyance for the adventurer and a well aimed swing of the sword was enough to end it. However intrigued by the life of ordinary citizens in Tamriel the Adventurer decided to return to the Elven Ruin and observe the comings and goings of the Forester who had pursued the wolf dogging The Dunmer. To this end the Forester decided to go hunting when he espied Deer. Watching NPC's perform less common activities in a game is always intriguing and truly adds to the realism. this day was to be no exception.
The Imperial Forester ran, with bow in hand after the deer. Clad in his heavy, and I daresay clumsy Imperial Steel Armor. He stopped to fire, and missing a deer he cursed in frustration, then the process repeated itself. while the lcukless forester continued his little chase time and again as he moved about the countryside. Eventually I took pity on the poor forester and pulled out my own bow. Shooting a couple of deer down i stayed with the forester as he went to gather meat from the deer. It began to snow, I decided to talk to the forester. To my surprise he mumbled about the gathering snowstorm, and told me something of the region. I was quite astonished. While I knew that Oblivions AI was quite intelligent, and allowed the forester to curse his own lack of luck, the awareness of the environment and what was happening in it was just too much to take. I really had to convince myself that this was a feature coded into the game and not some kind of supernatural phenomena.

My next little tale has to do with NPC Allegiance and it's funny consequences in the City of Bruma.

#2. TES IV Oblivion:

The Price of Allegiance.

I once had one of the strangest and most amusing experiences in the city of Bruma when a glitch with Radiant AI turned into a peculiar happenstance. As a member of the Dark Brotherhood the Dark Elf Assassin and sometimes adventurer Celedrin had been sent on many deadly assignments. This time he was stationed in an Inn in the Nordic City of Bruma, scoping out any advantage on his target, who sat apparently drunk at a table near the door of the seedy little tavern. Finding nothing the Assassin decided the time for a strike had come, why not a public execution this time? It is worth mentioning that this particular Dark Elf had gained the trust of many in Cyrodiil, and many were willing to turn a blind eye to his activities, some even willing to fight at his side. Now the elf stealthily approached the table and delivered a mighty jab. But the subject was more powerful then first anticipated, and did not keel over at the first strike. But that mattered little, for what happened next drove such thoughts fro the adventurers mind, many around the tavern rushed to the injured man's aid- but not all, in fact some did quite the opposite and started to attack those who were now assailing the Dark Elf. As the inn turned into a sea of chaos the dark elf tried out the door, but the mod followed him. As NPC's died left and right the guards joined the fray. the crafty dark elf, wanted to see how things would play out however and thus hopped straight onto a nearby roof. Many more NPC's apparently from all over Bruma came to join the fight as the stunned Dark elf watched from above- the guards down below dispatched all of them, but something was happening- the NPC's were attacking the guards directly now, something truly novel, still they kept dying, things would have returned to normal after that, but this was no ordinary glitch, indeed to my astonishment, and glee once the guards had killed all the other NPC's they turned on each other, and kept switching allegiance as another one died- screaming Murder all the while, only to be replaced by a re-spawn later of course, and thus for the next twenty minutes I watched guards fighting amongst themselves. It was the funniest thing I have ever seen in a game.

Next up a thrilling battle from Morrowind.

TES III. Morrowind:

Lord of the Telvan.

I have been working on my new Morrowind character for a while now, carefully leveling him up and trying to complete as many quests as possible. to that end before this tale begins understand that I had already become Master of the Fighters guild and Archmage of the Mages Guild. We are talking about an extremely powerful character (level 65 currently). I had recently sold about 200,0000 gold Worth of Objects in Mournhold at the Armory (all Daedric equipment taken from Golden Saints). thus I was flushed with cash. With no clear indication of where to spend that yet I had been checking all over for spells I had not purchased earlier. I have not cheated at all with this character, and thus after painfully leveling up my enchant skill to 75 (and destroying lots' of perfectly good soulgems with really good souls to recharge my items- enchanting new ones is too slow for levelling enchant) I thought i would try to enchant my Daedric Daikatana that I had killed a guy at the Dren Plantation for (he is one of my favorite murders in the whole game). However saving and trying to enchant it for a couple of tries I decided that I just had had enough with trying to enchant my own objects, thus I went to a Mages Guild enchanter In Wolverine Hall, and using the soul of a Golden Saint I had my sword enchanted to do 60 points of Shock Damage ontop of the 60 points of damage it already did. After successfully having paid for this new uberweapon I promptly saved the game then tested it on all the NPC's nearby, as suspected it was instakill on all of them. i then reloaded.
I had one quest-line I had not yet fulfilled and was pretty far along on, I had yet to kill Archmagister Gothren of House Telvanni to claim his place. Thus I took my new ubersword, some restore magicka potions from the mages guild chest and set out for Tel Aruhn. Upon arrival to the city I wasted no time in using my levitation spells to fly to the top of Gothren's tower. Before going in I used one of my potions, and made sure all my armor and weapons were in perfect condition. Inside Gothren waited with his Dremora Guards. I decided the safest course would be to provoke him to fight me, thus I insulted him until he got angry. Drawing out my new sword I dropped each of his two Dremora gurads with one hit each, then sheathing my sword I prepared for the real battle. Gothren cast his first spell before I could do much, and I found myself paralyzed while summoned a Daedric Dagger to gut me with. A couple of hits later I unfroze and quickly countered with a devastating Lightning Spell (as you can tell I like Shock damage). But when facing one of the most powerful mages in Morrowind one must remember that reflect spells are quite harmful. thus the process repeated itself over, me getting paralyzed, then countering with something powerful. Eventually I had to heal myself, and I had to use up a couple of restore magicka potions. Then I changed tactic- I started off by paralyzing Gothren back, then while he was parlyzed using a disitigrate weapon spell of him, so he would have to resummon his little dagger when he got unstuck. Then I used my shock damage again. And on it went for another twenty minutes- rinse and repeat. An epic struggle of magical energy as two extremely powerful mages went at it. But finally I tired of the conflcit, and smote down my enemy with a quick blow from my sword- keeping a telvanni Tradition, after all Telvanni are extremely fond of enchanted items- this archmagister is no different.

Just too many to count.

The first time I advanced in the Morrowind MQ was epic. I really got into the story, reading all the information that was presented about the Nereverine Cult and the Sixth House. I was like.. oh wait, this Nereverine could like.. be me. Then BAM! It WAS! 'Twas sweet. But then also mercing all the Ash Vampires in the Red Mountain than going to the center to take out Dagoth Ur. Finding out he wasn't some lifeless, brain-dead monster but rather an intelligent 'bad-guy' was a pleasant surprise.

In Oblivion, I remember thinking how [censored] me and Lucien Lachance were during the dead-drop quests. In Bravil, when it all came clear what was happening, it was one of the few times I just loved Oblivion. Right after that quest, when you meet the Black Hand... ugh... AWESOME! Gross, but awesome.

I also fell inlove with House Redoran after a few characters. I always joined Hlaalu because they were in Balmora, which was always the city I spent most my time in. Defending Athyn Sarethi from assassins, helping his son out, he was a character I felt a great connection with. I'd throw him on a list of my favorites.

Another great moment is when I stumbled into that Daedric excavation site on my way to the Urshlaku early in my Morrowind career. My character was like level 7. I found the big door, somehow killed the Golden Saint (epic fight for that level) and used the lock-splitter scroll I chanced upon by sheer luck not too soon before hand. Suddenly, the best shield in the game was staring down on me, as was an absolute treasure-filled room with Daedric goodies. I missed that kind of stuff in Oblivion.

Getting lost on Morrowind when I first got the game way back when it was first released. It was awesome you could get lost in a video game.

Anybody remember the feeling in Morrowind when finding the Shrine of Azura? Breath taking feeling when finding a giant statue watching the coast.

Amazing

I didn't really have many bad moments on the games. Except for the part in Morrowind when I accidently killed the Kwama Queen in one of the missions and couldn't complete a quest.
