Memory Issue

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 6:36 pm

I'm installing the game for the first time. This is what has happened so far...

*Downloaded Daggerfall and DOSBox 7.3 to Desktop Folder
*Installed DOSBox 7.3 into Program Files and made a folder called Games in it
*I unpacked Daggerfall into the directory "C:\"
*I opened DOSBox, brought the CPU cycles up to 8,000 and entered "MOUNT C Games - freesize 700"
*Then entered, "MOUNT D C:\DFCD - Daggerfall"
*Then "D:"
*And lastly, "INSTALL"
*Then I entered install on hard drive, then selected Huge install.
*Directed it to C:\DAGGER
*Start installing...

This is where I'm stopped in my tracks, it doesn't even start installing, and then it just says I don't have enough memory. Even on the smalliest installation size. I've tried for 3 days and can't figure it out. Can someone please help me?

Is that "-freesize 700" or "- freesize 700"? Only one of them would work, and that's "-freesize 700".

It could also happen because you use Vista and installed DOSBox in Program Files. You might need to run DOSBox as an administrator to make it work, or install it elsewhere. C:\DOSBox, for example.

You could also try the http://static.gamesas.com/downloads/games/daggerfall_legal_and_installation.pdf.

Okay, so I use XP, I am the administrator, so what you are saying is that if I move DOSBox from Program Files to C:\, then move all the Daggerfall stuff into C:\DOSBox/Games, and then in DOSBox type?
MOUNT C Games -freesize 700 MOUNT D C:\DFCDD:INSTALL

That it'll install just fine?

So I have gotten further, I have just finished installing the extra quests, and patch. I exited DOSBox and it told me to open up a particular CFG File called "Z.CFG".

Open Z.CFG in DOSBox folder\Games\DAGGER and make sure that both PATH and PATHCD say c:\dagger\arena2\ and then save the file. (you won't need the CD anymore).

Now open the dosbox.conf file which is where you installed DOSBox and do the following changes:
memsize=16 should be changed to 40. The game uses about 32-34 or so, but it's good to have a safety margin.
core=auto should be work just fine as the dynamic core is rather mature now. However, if you run with the dynamic core on a fast computer you should limit the amount of cycles cause I've seen the jitterbug otherwise. If you stumble upon any problem, then go to the normal core.
cycles=max runs just fine. If you want to run at some specific cycles I would recommend about 20000 - 30000. You should cap it there somewhere if you use the auto/dynamic core with cycles=auto limit 30000.

Then go to the bottom where it says "# Lines in this section will be run at startup." and add the following lines:
MOUNT C GAMES
C:
CD DAGGER
FALL.EXE Z.CFG

Save the config file as Daggerfall.conf and you're done with that.

I don't know how to access the CFG file and change the paths, or find the dosbox.conf files anywhere... I have no idea what to do, any help? :(
I'm so close yet so far away...

Look for DOSbox in your Start menu. There are options in there to edit the config files.

Okay thankyou very much, I have everything done but this.

Open Z.CFG in DOSBox folder\Games\DAGGER and make sure that both PATH and PATHCD say c:\dagger\arena2\ and then save the file. (you won't need the CD anymore).

What do I do here? I can't just open it my computer doesn't read CFG Files.

isn't there a little program that could do all that with just one "double click" on the mouse ???

seems quite complicated for a 148mb game ??

DOS games of the 90s were much more complicated to get to run than Windows games of today.

I dispute this claim. Daggerfall was perfectly easy to get running in the 90s. It got complex because DOSbox needs more configuration than any PC I had then ever did to run a similar game. Sure, there was a higher chance it just wouldn't work because some weird hardware configuration wasn't supported, but generally it wasn't any harder to get a game working. It was just different.

What makes Daggerfall a pain to run is it doesn't like modern computers. DOSbox is awesome, but nobody in the 90s had to know how to mount directories as CDs to install a game and we didn't have to know not to set the cycles over 60,000 to avoid glitches. A lot of Windows games, some of them much newer, have similar issues on new machines. GTA San Andreas and System Shock 2 both hate dual-core machines, for example. There are work-arounds, but they increase the barrier to newbies wanting to play the game.

In DOS, you have to be sure to configure the EMM386 and himem memory manager correctly so enough base mem is available, and be sure you get the CD-ROM, mouse and sound drivers working correctly.

A lot of tinkering is needed to make a good config.sys and autoexec.bat that can run most games properly, and then there are games like Ultima 7 that require some even more extreme settings. Setting up a virtual drive with the MOUNT command in DOSBox is nothing compared to that, anyone who is comfortable with old DOS should be able to do that in their sleep.

Maybe I got lucky, because I never found it to be difficult or complex for most games. The appearance of Windows 95 did make it easier, though. Then again, maybe I played the wrong games. I certainly never played Ultima 7.

Hey guys, I was looking through someones personal property and out of no where it crashed and said ERROR 113. I've been burgeralizing stuff since I stepped out of the first dungeon, so this is odd for me. I'm wandering if it's normal or something bad is wrong and I need to fix it. Any help is appreciated, thankyou.

EDIT: Nevermind, I found out that this was a normal invetory related error that happens from time to time.
