Memory Patch and CTD Implications

Post » Tue Sep 22, 2015 5:02 am

If you're running the latest version of SKSE and have the memory patch activated and you get a random CTD but you aren't hitting your limits on either block in MemoryBlocksLog.log, what can be deduced from this?

Is it possible to rule out certain kinds of causes like texture mods or memory leaks?

Have you used http://boss-developers.github.io/ or http://loot.github.io/ to sort your load order ???

If your mods are badly ordered it can cause problems. !!!

Thank you, Mark41, but that's not the answer to the question I asked.

Not much really. There are a number of reasons why you could be crashing.

What mods are you using? Best to post a load order. A dxdiag could help also.

Use spoiler tags. The button is on the bottom row of the edit buttons. Just to the left of the justification buttons.

Best way to determine if textures are causing the crash is to get rid of them and try the game. A memory leak eats up your RAM until bad things start to happen. Skyrim doesn't have memory leaks in the base game.

THis is a mod issue likely.

What Mark posted is also very relevant.

Like it was stated if you are not near the memory cap aka aprox 3.2 gigs then it is likely an issue with a mod or mods.

It could still be a texture mod not installed correctly.

Load Order of mods will have a barring especially when you have quite a few mods running.

Could be that you are near or passed the max number of pluggins that can be run.

Could be a mod was not updated correctly if it was updated.

Some mods are script intensive and possibly the mod might have had a hiccup with a script.

Installing mod manually or with mod manager does make difference. Some mods might not be designed to be used directly with a mod manager or requires one to be used. If the mod is not designed for Nexus Mod Manager to be used then NMM might not have installed all of the required files in the correct spot so that means the plugins are in the right spot but it might be missing the data files or some of them. It might not mean a crash will happen but it is more likely and having other issues.

Ini edits or not cleaning dirty mods, Bashed Patch and mod load order. Weak PC system, uninstalling mods and continuing that save.

A lot of reasons for CTD's.

I always crash. Its a silent CTD. occurs anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour into a play session.

I've tried almost everything. Been modding for 10 years, this game gives me fits.

I've used Skyrim Performance Monitor and am not even close to the VRAM cap for my card ( 4GB ) in fact I havent gone over 3GB. Ram usage is not high either

Since switching to the GTX 980 I have been using ugrids 7 but will try ugrids 5.

Below is my ENB local and mod list.

I think it is the ugrids at 7. The game was designed around ugrids at 5.

I've only been using ugrids 7 for 2 weeks. The past 2 years i've been at 5. Silent CTD regardless.

I am using onboard Realtek Sound but have the sound set to 16bit 44.1

Does it happen with a new game with no mods enabled or just with the unofficial patches and have the ugrids set back to 5.

In addition......

have you checked the event viewer for anything? Might be nothing but worth a shot.

It's been a while since I tested without mods. If I recall it was always stable. I could run around for an hour with speedmult set to 500 and not crash.

But as you can see my mod list is relatively modest.

I will test at 5 grids and check the event viewer and report back.

Aside from lowering your performance and maybe causing potential instability to your game, because to the greatly increased resource usage when raising uGrids, if you save a game after you have altered this value,

the new value will be implemented into your saved game.

Meaning, if you lower your uGrids again, you won't be able to load up the saves which used the higher value. !!!

If you don't do it correctly, you will get a crash. !!!!

Reverting to an earlier uGrid value is not that easy as you thing.

Just follow those steps, and you will be fine.

  1. Start Skyrim and load up a saved game.
  2. Use ALT+TAB to switch out of Skyrim and back to your Desktop.
  3. Edit the Skyrim.ini file as normal, modifying the uGridsToLoad variable to the desired lower value. Save Skyrim.ini and close it.
  4. Use ALT+TAB to switch back to Skyrim.
  5. Open the Command Console using the tilde ~ key and type refreshini.
  6. Save your game to a new save slot, and it should now have the correct new uGridsToLoad value.

I wasn't referring to the instability ugrids can cause. I'm with ya on that. I was referring to all the mumbo jumbo you posted about switching ugrids mid game. The mod I linked takes care off that.

Maybe for you, but not for other people out there !!!

Users Comments about this patch:

Spoiler
I Have a Problem with this SKSE Plugin.
After activating the mod i'm not able to see static buildings like runis, or Whiterun from a distance where you normaly should see it. i tried to set uGrids up to 11 or 13 but this leads to AI spawns in an additional range, which hurts my performance. Another example would be the ruin, which locates the golden claw early in the game, i'm not able to see it if i stand in Riverwood.

----------

I'm afraid this plugin doesn't work for me.
I had ugrids set to 7 in the ini. I started the game, loaded a save, and tried to change it to 9 from the console. Instant CTD.
Then I tried setting ugrids to default in the ini and load the game. CTD.

Same here, came to check for a solution, going to give it a try again. After the CTD I checked my INI to find that it was not changed.
I.E 5 did not change to 7.

-----------

On an otherwise unmodded game with no ini tweaks, this script causes large amounts of stutter on cell load, even when uGridsToLoad is set to 5. This often causes CTD when these stutters occur. With this mod removed I have no issues.

Honestly it's no issue for me, I was using this as a fail-safe, but I'm sure other people who would utilize this have similar issues.

I can confirm this small stutter. Happens every time I travel across Skyrim. I don't remember having it before this mod.

-----------

I still CTD at Windhelm stables just as I turn my camera to face the bridge. Even after altering the uGridsToLoad back to 5 and finished the Civil War questline. I don't crash when I am inside the city.

Going to try a new game and fast travel directly to Windhelm stables and see what happens.

------------

Installing this mod (using NMM) caused my skyrim to crash on attempting to load a saved game. This crash persisted even after uninstalling it. im running ugrids7 and 64 cell buffer.

I don't post more...

There are different systems with different mod configurations...bla..bla..bla...

So that mod is not a 100 percent remedy for that particularly problem we are talking here.

What i have suggested earlier above,...IS. !!!

Apologies. I just assumed it was mumbo jumbo because there aren't any facts, just anecdotal references.

After all, this is a Bethesda modding experience
