Memory problem (?)

Post » Sun Nov 29, 2015 12:00 pm

Hello everyone,

I am getting desperate and unable to find any solution. When running F4, windows message pop ups about Fallout 4 having no memory and it has to be terminated. If I do not terminate F4 and keeps playing, it will let me for a few more minutes. The problem is if I look in the manager, F4 takes only 2,6GB of RAM and my total RAM usage is only about 60% with a lot of free memory.

When Fallout 4 launched, I could play it for about 1-2 hours before this happened and I had to restart the PC, otherwise it would happen right after I load F4 again. After installing the F4 beta patch and new Crimson drivers, the game crashes almost instantly if I fast travel after the load. Even when I do not fast travel, I can play for about 10 minutes before this same happens. I tried to do a clean downgrade back to previous drivers (uninstall, registry cleaning, safemode install...) and threw away also F4 beta patch, but the same is still happening.

I tried ENBoost, but it did nothing for me.

The game is now completely unplayable for me, anyone has any advice, please?

Win 7 64bit

8GB RAM

i7 950 3,07GHz

Radeon R9 290 4GB

I can run the Witcher on max, yet I cannot play F4 at all :(

Have you messed with virtual memory? Can you post a screenshot of the message?

Is there a background program/service taking up memory/misbehaving? Clean boot: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135%C2%A0

Use spoiler tags. Special BBCode button to the left of the Font dropdown box above. Select Spoiler from the dropdown and paste the full report in the textbox.

Are you one of these people that disables the page file?

I get this from time to time too but the game doesn't crash, mostly. I have crashed a few times, only once did I see the Windows notification. I'd have to assume the others are related.

Sometimes I've minimized out to do something else and there is the prompt to close FO4 staring me in the face. I simply close it and carry on.

This needs addressing.

As to my page file, it was 1024-1024 but I have since set it too 2048-2048 as I do recall page file size (or lack thereof) can lead to this in previous games on this engine. Though 1024 should be enough, it's worth a shot anyway.

Best thing to do with the page file is let Windows manage it automatically.

Nothing wrong with hard limits as long as there is a page file.

Windows doesn't always know what's best. :brokencomputer: :P

Well after adding page file to MSI Afterburners monitoring list I suspect PF may be the issue.

I just went in game and RAM usage was 4500(ish) MB's and PF was 5600(ish) MBs.

I was a little surprised it was that high but only time will tell if this solves the low RAM notifications.

Yeah, I disabled my virtual memory, because I use an SSD. No games had problems with it so far. I guess this should not be the issue, because I still have 40% free RAM when this happens.

Can you post a dxdiag? https://help.ea.com/en/article/how-to-gather-dxdiag-information/

Use spoiler tags. SpecialBBCode button to the left of the Font dropdown. Paste in spoiler option from that dropdown.

How are you monitoring that RAM usage?

Can you post an image of the error message?

ALso Fallout 4 is 64-bit. The commit charge is what you are interested in not available RAM.

You want to enable virtual memory. Do you have a HDD installed? You can put the pagefile there. Again the commit charge is what you want to look at. Ill bet it's almost maxed.

Well, so far since increasing the page file Windows has not complained of low RAM since.

Just thought I'd update in case others run across this issue.

I honestly think the whole SSD and pagefile thing can be put to bed. Just let WIndows manage the file. Other options are more RAM or disable/uninstall background apps.
