Menial Task Exchange

Awesome!!!! If you can't do the pathgridding, no worries. And yeah, just a nice humble Redguard family. If you're feeling creative you can give the house a bit of character, like indicate they have a job or are avid bowl collectors, or something like that :P, but that's entirelly up to you :D.

Pathgridding is no problem.

Think it's worth my while opening a thread about this on TESAlliance too?Hmm, hadn't really thought about a list of participants to be honest, if you're meaning "people willing to help out". I was figuring people could take a look at the list of jobs and just decide whether they feel like doing one of those jobs for a bit. There's no pressure or expectation on you to say "yes" to a job that way. It could also (maybe) encourage people to volunteer in the first place? After all, if I have to put my name on a list as "willing to help" I may not bother, but if all I need to do is contact the author asking for help, that's not such a big deal and doesn't commit me to anything else.

I am considering whether a list of "people who have helped" would be worthwhile, but I'm not really sure about that. People will get credited in readmes (and hopefully threads and general discussions) anyway, and I don't want to make people feel there's any kind of competition or pressure in this.

:lmao: I was really speaking metaphorically when I said 'add me to the list'. You're quite correct in that a list of people willing to help puts undue pressure on them. Now a frequently updated list in the OP of people who have exchanged services, that would be a good I think. It would help to show the practicality of swapping grunt work with fellow modders. :D

Definitely make a thread on TESA. :foodndrink: I'd suggest here in the Modding General forum: http://tesalliance.org/forums/index.php?/forum/21-modding-general/
as that's typically where modders go when either looking for help or looking to offer it.

@Vacuity I think you are either over-complicating the issue, or assuming a lack of ability on my part. If somebody wishes to help, I would assign them a group of problem areas, and some simple instructions. If a person volunteers and never gets around to it, nothing changes, as I am still going through the edits by myself. And this plugin isn't mergeable, nor does it have any fancy Wrye Bash requirements. It's just an esp which edits things it is not supposed to, in the course of editing what it is designed to change.

Whoguru, I'll get it up when I get back from work this evening. Currently running late for work, so not now...
I think you are either over-complicating the issue...It's just an esp
Which is my point, how are you envisaging having two people working on the same esp concurrently? One of you has to wait for the other person to finish with it and pass it over. If you both do work in parallel, only one person's changes get kept, you can't merge in cleaning edits from the other person's copy.

I have no idea why you're talking about Bash, Gecko is the tool used for merging plugins together.

Anyway, not my problem; your request is still in the OP and it's you who has to have a plan for how to allocate work, not me, I'm just trying to point out that I really don't see how you're going to make it work smoothly if someone does offer to help.

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1180419-relz-weather-all-natural-thread-34/page__view__findpost__p__17745069 a request to put here? Menial, yes, but there's slightly more than trivial stuff to do to get it to work.

Didn't the motivation for this thread come from the talk about the tedious weather box work that needs to be done for AN? I'm going to guess your request is exactly what this thread is for! hehe

I'd actually volunteer but I had to stop myself because I have too much other Oblivion-related work to do and don't want to volunteer unless I know 100% that I'll be able to work on it in a timely manner

I've been waiting for you to ask.
It's a large repetitive set of work, it's easily broken down into component pieces (cell by cell), it requires only fairly basic skills in the CS (place the box correctly and set the disabled and parented states), and isn't asking for significant amounts of creativity; just get the boxes lined up properly, don't miss any windows and it's good. Also trivial to add the new work into the main mod via Gecko.

It is indeed one of the tasks I was thinking would be perfect for this kind of informal and ad hoc contribution.

I'll add it to the main post myself in a minute, and I'll even see about doing a cell or two myself to boot. They are my weather boxes, after all. Now that I've seen what a difference they make, I may as well help out even a little bit in getting them where they're supposed to be. I also have a cunning idea of a TES4Edit trick that'll save the duplication of CS-work setting two (or three) boxes per window. I'll have to see if that works correctly though before I explain the trick, don't hold your breath, it might not work.

I'll also get a post on TESAlliance just now as I have a spare hour I didn't expect to have spare.

I wouldn't mind doing a bit of this, but I have exams up until next week, and then am moving(ish) to start my industrial placement, so on June 6th I can start helping out :D

Ok, cool. Your OP sort of implied that stuff with lengthy explanations wasn't necessarily fitting. I'll stop overthinking it now :P

Hmm, I don't consider your explanation overly lengthy. Maybe I should think about a way to re-word that section of the OP (suggestions?). I was thinking of work that requires really *huge* amounts of descriptive/technical explanation. That's basically a way of trying to exclude stuff that either requires large amounts of creative input or much more technically-specific skills than I'm aiming for.

If I came and asked for people to do some cluttering, but needed to give five paragraphs of text explaining the "feeling" needed for the cluttering because it's in an important unique area, that needs too much creative input to be a simple menial task.

Meh, I dunno, maybe I should remove that part about long explanations?

Based on my impressions I think the best thing to get across is that it's the kind of work that can be accomplished by following directions alone and that if it requires any kind of extra creative thinking on the part of the person doing the work, and thus likely a sustained correspondence between the person making the request and the person(s) carrying out the task then it isn't appropriate. I mean, it doesn't have to be super strict but I think your clutter example is the kind of work that requires a good deal of correspondence as if among team members and is not a menial task that one can "request and forget," in a way. Of course there's nothing stopping this thread from connecting people who might go on to collaborate more in-depth but I'm assuming you'd want to limit the scope rather than leave it too open-ended.

In this case, I can't say I'm particularly happy about being right. Good luck with it anyway.

I rewrote bits of the OP a little bit ago, I'll strike that request off in a minute.

Immortal-D, if you still want someone to look at that mod you're cleaning I'll take a look at it. Spotting wild edits happens to be a specialty of mine :P

Done, and now I've run out of space in my PM inbox. How careless of me. :brokencomputer:

I'll get the TESAlliance post/thread updated after I get some kind of space in my inbox...
