Menu music and introductions

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 11:34 pm

Not that I've had a problem with Elder Scrolls menu music in the past, but I am irritated with some from other games. We're going to be starting the game perhaps hundreds of times, so they should make sure the introduction music doesn't grate. My example would be Call of Duty World at War which had some weird squeaky whistle which was terrible. Also when pausing the game by going to the menu, turn off the music! If I have to take a phone call while playing Dragon Age, the music just gets louder while you're looking at the menu. What the hell is that?

Now Oblivion's intro music had a good thing going where it started low, then increased as it went on. I like that because I watch movies on my xbox as well as playing games, and the volume differences are way different, so most games start out loud.

Also as a favor to us, can the game upon being started up go straight to the menu screen? We don't need to see fancy logo animations for who made the game. We know who made the game, it says so on the box. What is that screen that says "push start" for anyway? It doesn't do anything! Get to the menu already.

Any other comments concerning this type of thing are welcome.

I would enjoy to be able to, in the settings menu, change the menu music's volume. That would be nice.

Yes to the menu screens! OMG Fallout 3 and the scrolling... Argh! As far as music goes I have full faith in Beth. I loved the full scope of Morrowinds score, and dug Oblivions, and now there seems to be a touch of Morrowind in what we have heard from Skyrim. Yup, I'm trusting ya Beth.

Unfortunately, the animated logos at the start when it loads up seem to be standard in every game, I can't actually name any games off the top of my head that don't have them. I can only assume it's another forum of advertising, sort of the game's way of telling us "This is who made this game! Buy more of our games!", still, it doesn't bother me too much as long as it can be skipped, some games don't even let you do that, and THAT is very annoying.

As to menu music, I'm assuming the main theme we've heard in the trailers will be what plays in the main menu, since Morrowind and Oblivion also had their theme songs in ther menu, so there, I've been impressed by it, but you can listen to it yourself in the trailers.

It makes sense to me to just take the player to the menu screen immediately. Upon arrival the background would show the normal animated logo for 3 or so seconds and then fade into the title screen. Any fine print such as "Bethesda....blahblahblah....Havok.....blahblah....All rights reserved" could either show at the bottom of the title screen, or in the options menu. The player would have control over the menu the whole time.

Or... just show all that crap when the player loads their game from the main menu.

Both of these seem to be good alternatives.

By the way... Fallout 3's title slides were extremely annoying to click through when testing a mod on the PC. :swear:

they have to do the logos for copyright law.. they have to give everyone credit or they can be sued

This. Well, close. As long as they're credited anywhere, they don't get sued, but companies make deals with each other and oftentimes being featured in the game's introduction is part of that deal. A lot of games use the Unreal Engine but not all of them credit it. Crytek seems really picky about including the vocalized "Achieved with CryEngine 3" everywhere though. Getting your name out is simply a way to advertise, and people who really like the way a game looks and performs are more likely to remember the name of its engine if you tell them what it is every time they play.

I don't really mind the messages being there, but I really prefer it when you can skip them. It annoys me to have to wait 30 seconds every time I go to play a game.

World at war... Thats a Japanese instrument... Because you know... the games focus was kind in that area they would use it. (I personaly like that kind of music.) Also thats kinda how some Japanese music is.

Your problem with Dragon Age.. Push the mute on your TV you should not even have sound on your TV when on the phone makes it seem you are not even paying attention to the person you are talking to.

Oblivion would still get loud if you kept it going would it not? So you would still have to turn it down.

Its called advertising its how some of these smaller companies get to advertise since they dont have TV comercials and all that jazz. Also its kind of a loading screen. If you notice most games force you to watch at least some of that video. before letting you press a button to end it and bring you to the main menu. Others will just force you to stare at a loading screen then you get to the menu. also some times the have a contract with the person that helped with the game to make a video thing everytime you start the game.

All these problems seem to be a personal problem than a actual problem.

Get a phone call? Mute the TV. Pay attention to the person calling. you ffffffffff

Music getting to loud? well turn it down in the menu... iIs what that option is there for,

I dont have a problem with Dragon Age music getting louder when I pause it. So yeah personal problem.
