Merging bones

So I'm trying to merge all the BB models from Moranar's BB armor, so that they are all in one mesh (like Bahamuts, SHOTN and Skyrim's armor) but there is not very much reading material to explain it for blender 2.4, and as usually, I'm stuck.

I've always hated blender because of how hard it is for me to rig stuff in it, and I've been doing this for two hours now, I'm losing my mind.

first I select the mesh, then the correct bone in pose mode: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/23627856/bone1.JPG

then I press Ctrl+P and select "Bone" and get this: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/23627856/bone2.JPG

Am I going to have to awkwardly realign everything every time? Or is there a way to make this work by default?

I've been unsuccessful in finding a way to simply merge all the bones, or clear any sort of information that makes the ankle mesh move the way it does.

I tried using a ChildOf constraint... https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/23627856/bone3.JPG (I moved the leg, but at least now the armor is moving with it!)
