Mermaids!

Post » Fri Jun 11, 2010 6:01 am

Anyway, I'm not calling you a troll in particular, I'm just saying this thread has troll written all over it, and it's pretty obvious/ridiculous to refute that fact considering everyone here so far has disagreed with you and dismissed this as nonsense.

So, people disagree, that doesn't make him/her a troll.

TES does not have anything in its lore...

How would you expect a humanoid fish creature to survive in frigid water, anyhow?

Not everyone's familiar with all the specifics of ES lore.

It could be more fish than human. Also, magic.

There was a mermaid statue in Oblivion. Remember? In Anvil?

Oh, there we go. Mermaids for everyone!

Mermaids don't exist in TES lore, except as a statue in Anvil.

Yep, this provides at least some justification for mermaids in TES. However, I agree with others who say Skyrim isn't the proper region for such things. Too cold.

Agreed on the fact that Skyrim isn't right for mermaids. And the statue in Anvil was an easter egg, anyway.

Someone explain why the water near Skyrim would be too cold for mermaids. That stinks of bad reasoning.

if you don't then dont just write something like "It's stupid." give an actual reason!

Alright... I wouldn't have used the word 'stupid' but you already suggested it so what the hell? It's stupid because mermaids are half human. If Bethesda were to include them, they couldn't just be treated as some ordinary creature. They'd be categorized as a non-playable race and loads upon loads of lore would have to explain:

  • A. Why they weren't in any other TES game before
  • B. Why the hell they'd be in the coldest province in Tamriel instead of somewhere warm like Hammerfell or Elsweyr
  • C. What their historical relations and interactions with all the other races were

Too much effort to add an enemy that's not even cool. I'd rather have something fearsome swimming around in the dark waters of the Sea of Ghosts.

Like a http://dreager1.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/giant-octopus.jpg or a http://img2.timeinc.net/ew/dynamic/imgs/080411/animals/Orca-killer-whale_l.jpg. Not some girly fantasy creature. Save that for the Barbie forums golliath9. ;)

well as corny as mermaids sound... idk. but we really do need some water enemies other than just the one (or the three in MW). but still, mermaids sounds lame, and the reason why is because it recalls little girls, glitter and disney movies.

We have human maids, and argonian maids, don't we? I don't see a problem with mer maids.

There was a mermaid statue

I think the closest thing to mermaids in the lore might be the Maormer or Sea Elves, but they only live in tropical climates and would be very unlikely to travel to Skyrim. A shame too, they sound pretty awesome. They tame sea-serpents for transportation.

I dont think the fit in with the whole Skyrim theme. If the game was set in Summerset Isles then ya. I could see it.

Mermaids are not mentioned in the lore. One statue of a mermaid exists in Anvil, as an EASTER EGG.

This made me laugh. Creative, to say the least.

TES does not have anything in its lore that would support the latest craze from the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Jack Sparrow will not be a companion in this game, and as such, those sixy mermaids (and mermen?!) will not be making an appearance either (I sure hope not...) How would you expect a humanoid fish creature to survive in frigid water, anyhow? This is almost as good as the threads about adding guns and muskets to TES. And once again, my answer is no.

Wait, there's a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie? Sweat! What's it called?

That's not exactly true. Dragons had some backing in TES lore as to what they were, and some amount of lore surrounding them. They had just enough of a presence to be able to build off of for a new game. Mermaids have no presence, and do not exist at all in TES. Also, there was a massive fan backing for adding dragons, and only a few people asking for mermaids.

Not at all...

  • A. Daggerfall had http://uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Dragonling#Dragonling and http://uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Skakmat. Redguard had http://uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Nafaalilargus.
  • B. If I had to choose which province would prove most favorable for a dragon, I'd pick Skyrim for it's climate and terrain hands down.
  • C. Look up Thu'um. Ancient Nedes could talk to them. This is lore from past games, not new information.

Mermaids? in Skyrim? wouldn't they freeze?

I wouldn't mind actually. I am not one of those Morrowind fans which only likes new and original creatures in fantasy RPGs.

The majority of the forum users are Morrowind fans, and the majority liked dragons being added (and I don't think they're by any means original.) Who told you that Morrowind fans only like original monsters?

The people claiming mermaids can't be in Skyrim because they weren't in previous games/lore are nonsensical. I mean, how dare a game company ever do anything new, right? How dare they! We should never put anything into a video game or write any new lore because that breaks lore by... not... being... there... before...

wouldn't mermaids be a good water creature for this game? maybe even throw in some mermen? i think it's a good idea!
if you don't then dont just write something like "It's stupid." give an actual reason!

The closest thing TES has is the Moamer, but Skyrim is probably too cold for them, as they prefer the waters around summerset isles and the like...
