Mermaids!

Post » Fri Jun 11, 2010 4:15 pm

To cruel, think about the nvde ladies who has to swim around in an arctic ocean.
However Daggerfall had mermaids and Shivering Isles should have them to as it would have lots of water with better temperature,

Mermaids aren't people, remember. What about all those poor whales and fish that have to swim in an arctic ocean? Well, they don't mind. There's no reason mermaids couldn't be in Skyrim unless Bethesdahas already said in lore books that they can't survive in cold water.

IMO, TES has already added too many borrowed fairy-creatures. Werewolves was to me over the line. We already have vampires, we dont need werewolves. We already have dreugh, we dont need mermaids. It feels like all that is left now is fairies, leprechauns, centaurs, bigfoot, maybe throw in some medusas, hydras perhaps?

I would much rather see Bethesda make their own creatures instead of taking them all from folklores. They already have what, 75% of their creatures borrowed?

To all people who think Skyrim is too cold: meremaid "sightings" came from everywhere between the Caribbean's, Asia to and Russia.
To all people who think meremaids only are able to survive in salt waters: "reports" have indicated that they can swim up rivers.
To all people who think meremaids are too girly: when people still belived in meremaids, they were one of the most feared creatures (while being extraordinarily beautiful).

PS: all people who actually just dismiss the idea as being stupid are insecure about their sixuality and are trying to overcompensate.

Reports? dude, you do know their mythical right? :P, if my memory serves correctly, weren't there mer-folk in Daggerfall?

I'd rather Bethesda came up with their own mermaid inspired creature, like a Mer-wolf or something

they'd be ok to have, but not "The little mermaid" type mermaids. Reason is they aren't a race in Nirn thus far. However to add them as a monster as they've also been depicted in myth, and in various other games as well, would be a splendid idea.

I don't see how anyone would think the waters would be too cold. It gets damn cold in the water anyway, and there are mammals who live in the arctic circle and hunt for food 1500m under dense pack ice. To say it is too cold is to display weak imagination.

Now, in a series where we have: Medusas (half snake), Lamia (half snake or eel), Dreugh (half octopus), Spider Daedra (half spider), Centaurs (half horse), Herne (half goat), and Harpys (half eagle), how the heck would you argue against another half and half creature? In Redguard we even had a guy who was half boat! That's right, his bottom half was a boat.

Mermaids would be pretty cool, if done correctly.
Nothing fairy-like. Maybe something along the lines of the sea creatures in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

How about monstrous grotesque human-fish hybrids? With mouths like lamprey eels, and the soulless black eyes of a shark, their gnarled webbed hands ending in gruesome spiny claws. Rawr.

You're wrong here.

Werewolves are a real thing...so they copied werewolves from real life. Just like they copied tree from real life. And grass. And wood. And the sky! They should make their own sky, right? And maybe they should replace trees with triple-horned-merwolvogs?

Maybe mermaids in Skyrim could be restricted to volcanic springs? Not boiling hot, just heated. They could probably find gainful employment as masseurs in public hot baths. Warm water, light work, and no unwanted accusations that they are anything other than masseurs :).

Well, some people would be sufficiently filthy-minded to see something... improper (ahem), but there's no helping people like that :D.

There are already mermaids in Skyrim probably.

Plenty of elf maidens to meet.

The OP has got their wish.

Don't you think the icy waters of Skyrim would be a bit too cold for a mermaid?

No. Why would they be? Deep water is always cold, I don't think it is going to bother a mythological creature to adapt to whatever the situation is up there. You know Narwhals hang out 1500 meters below the ice? For a fantasy mermaid, that's no problem at all.

"It's stupid..."

...because I dislike mermaids. And they don't fit in with Skyrim.

Has there ever been a mention of mermaids in TES lore? I can't recall ever seeing it.

I see I'm not the only one to mention it.

Especially since Mermaids were probably just Narwhals (or manatee) seen from the deck .
