"It's stupid..."

...because I dislike mermaids. And they don't fit in with Skyrim.

I had actually never thought about that. Many ideas people have, there's nothing to say but "That's just stupid", but this, this is awesome! It would completely fit with the feel of the games. Then again... I'm not sure if they'd fit with lore, I've never read about them before, and Skyrim is the coldest region on Tamriel...

While I think mermaids aren't such a good idea, I do agree with the fact that Oblivion's water-life svcked and needs to be way better in Skyrim.

...where would you put them?

I mean, I've never heard of mermaids in a river, only oceans and bays. And the only ocean and bay's out there happen to be to the north. Ya know...where the icebergs are. Do these mermaids not care about the cold?

I would like to have merpeople in TES, but not in Skyrim. I don't think they'd fit in that geographical location. Maybe on the southern provinces' shores. Maybe in Morrowind and High Rock too. But not Skyrim. Although if they had them, I wouldn't be upset. I'd be excited. And "mer" means "elf" so that word might be confusing to the denizens of Tamriel.

Only if they're like classic sirens.

That is, they're terrible monsters and will rip your throat out while you're gawking at their goods.

Your sarcasm is amuzing for everyone I'm sure, but my point still stands. The only stories I've read/heard with mermaids in them were in Tropic waters where they dragged men off their boats. I'm not sure how they would handle the cold northern ocean waters. Their top half is just skill and bone, like us. Unless you got an example of them surviving such waters or a reason on how they could, I would find it odd if there were here in Skyrim.

Summerset Isles would be a much more likely place to find such things, in my opinion.

If "done right", sure, mermaids could be cool. If "done wrong", they could be horrible. (I think this is true of just about anything.)

I'd dislike generic mermaids that were just half-nekkid fish people. But there are some variations that could be cool. They could have a weird seaweed- or scale- or stone-like covering over their bodies, or be made entirely of living ice. They could be the infamous weresharks (note that TES werewolves are kinda half-man half-wolf when in "werewolf" form). They could be powerful casters of Illusion magic, capable of nearly shutting down the player. They could draw partly on the Irish tales of Selkies, which are sort of seals that shapeshift into humans by removing their skins, and have a lot of rather dark stories associated with them.

P.S. To all the folk saying the waters would be too cold: Fish actually thrive in cold water. This is because more air can be dissolved in cold water than in warm water (think of how soda goes flat if it gets warm), and fish need oxygen just as much as you do, although their method of obtaining it is very different.

If the mermaids were more fish than man (which I'd prefer), putting them in cold water would make plenty of sense.
