MERP (MiddleEarth Roleplaying Project) Thread XXI

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 12:47 am

I'm having an issue playing the MERP Beta, http://img693.imageshack.us/i/screenshot0x.png/

MERPData.esm and MiddleEarth.esm are both loaded right after Oblivion, while MERP Patch.esp is loaded after DLCShiveringIsles.esp. When I downloaded the beta, I put everything into one temporary location and THEN put it in my Data Files. No other .esp's are activated.

What's going on with Middle Earth? It's definitely a LOD problem--once I get closer to the "patchy landscape" it clears up again, looks like normal. Please help, I really would like to experience this mod!

You need to set your texture size to large. Have fun with MERP! ;)

I just watched the trailer. Erm... Wow! Just give me a minute while I go and get my jaw back!

Being serious for a second this looks absolutely fantastic. I love the look of Minis Tirith, but the quanty beaty of the Shire and Bree are great too. Will you be adding lots of unmentioned towns and cities too though, because with a map 7 times as big as Cyrodiil you'll need more than just the ones in the books surely.

Truly an astonishing piece of work. Ive nearly finished reading LOTR after the, well it must be something like twentieth time in my life. I hadnt read it for nearly ten years until a few weeks ago. I absolutely wish I had some time to commit to this, though I completely intend to do so as soon as Mesogea has a bit more of a life of its own. After the next Mesogea release and once a few more people plug into modding it, I am going to throw some time into MERP. Its an absolutely fantastic work, If I was wearing a hat I would take it off to you all.

You as a player will be able to wear all clothes. NPCs, on the other hand, will wear their allocated clothing, which will be race specific in most cases.

Actually on the MERP dev forums just recently, I suggested the idea that certain gear can't be worn by certain races due to size (Hobbits realistically shouldn't be able to put on Galadhrim armor, or Elves be able to wear Hobbit clothing). Weapons shouldn't be limited due to size I think, just dependent on how much strength your character has (so I think a really muscular Hobbit could be able to wield a large two-handed sword for example).

Wow. I just looked at some videos of this and it looks absolutely amazing.
I think Tolkien would have been proud. I hope I have the time and modding skill sometime in the near future to help you guys. Maybe when I'm finished with my Mesogea city mod if I want to work on something different for a while I can commit some time to this.

For now, I can only wish you all the best and may the hair on your toes never fall off! B)

Oh and favorite highlight that I've seen so far... Bree! Great job on that!

As a huge fan of J.R.R. Tolkien's work, I must say this is nothing short of amazing. I have downloaded the Beta and it is wonderful to see Middle-Earth rendered in my favorite game. I give my thanks to everyone working on this project, and can't wait for the next release!

Hi all!

James the Vorpal Bunny posted a huge picture update (over 30 new screens from armors, models, landscapes ... ) on our Moddb - Page. Here are a few examples, but on Moddb you can find much more of this stuff: http://www.moddb.com/mods/merp-middle-earth-roleplaying-mod

"A light from the shadows shall spring"

A calling from a host of fans,
To dwell upon the Middle Earth Lands,
Through Elder Scrolls a discovery is made,
To travel a path in your PC is laid,

Upon thee lies adventure a new,
It is wise my friend to take stock of the view,
For deep in the Forest of Old,
Will emerge those who are brave and bold,

From experience surely must come wisdom,
As you travel this vast kingdom,
Not all those who wander are lost,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost,

For it is told one mod to rule them all,
One mod to find you all,
One mod to which you fall,
And in your PC bind you.

Just a quick thank you from me for all the teams efforts. Words escape me, only some sort of poetry emerged.

Wow, I can't believe this is still going! I remember looking at least a year ago, probably longer as a guest, and I kind of figured that it wouldn't go anywhere. Good to see it's still alive and kicking.

How big is the team now? Is a lot of stuff getting done?

Wow, thanks Glimiril

@Gandalf: Well, its difficult to tell how big the team is ... propably we have 15 - 20 core members (working on exteriors, interiors, modeling, composing music, writing literature, ...) and about the same number of people who are less active. I'd say our progress is going better than ever before right now, one of the reasons for this might be that the team is concentrating much more on the important parts of the mod. With a bit of luck we will have all models for Rivendell finished soon and this will be a real milestone for us, considering how long we've waited for the models to build Rivendell in game. If you want to get an impression of what we are doing, and want to keep yourself updated on the progress of MERP please http://www.moddb.com/mods/merp-middle-earth-roleplaying-mod.

Haha, definitely improved from when I tested the mod way back in alpha stages, when only The Shire and Bree had a small amount done.

So at the next release (Christmas, right?), can we expect most of the content to be there?

IMO, there are several members that are at least or near professional levels of design.

Not quite, I'm afraid. The Shire and Rivendell don't exactly make up the whole of Middle Earth :P

We will have a very large chunk of content added though (mostly in the form of generated regions). This still leaves an even larger amount of content that is not there. But we have excellent modellers, and we are progressing very fast. So 2 - 3 years un till a "v1.0" is a reasonable expectation.

True, and the best thing is that they are spread over all development fields :)

Btw, Captain Iglo posted another news update on our Moddb page today. Here are some previews, but as usual you can find more on this page: http://www.moddb.com/mods/merp-middle-earth-roleplaying-mod

Wow, the updates on the ModDB site are impressive, the music especially. This will sound like a dumb question, but is all of the music done synthetically? I find it really hard to believe that one person has the power to create fully orchestrated music for a game mod :P.

But I guess I kind of expected too much in such a short time. Realistically, do you guys really see yourself releasing at V1.0 mod? 4 years of development time is a hell of a long time, usually people need to move on at some point in the middle.
