[REQ] Mesh Request - Slanted Castle Wall

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 10:52 pm

All right you bored mesh-masters, I have a request. I'm building a castle wall but one side has a steep incline. The vanilla castle wall meshes have curved variants but no inclined variants (usually called "ramp" in the CS). What I need is a section of castle wall with a 35-45 degree incline along the vertical axis. Sorry if that's clear as mud - I'm medicated atm. Below I've included the CS path for a section of stone wall that demonstrates what I'm after.

Static > Architecture > StoneWall > StoneWallRamp02

Thanks in advance to anyone who tackles this!

UPDATE: If it's somewhat simple to do, I'd also accept instructions on how to skew the existing mesh & collision in Blender or Maya. I'll need step-by-step instructions, though... and maybe some pretty pictures, too.

I experimented briefly with this using a shear of 0.25 (roughly 30 degrees) but it looked rather awful, the arches http://imgur.com/pdVcG Those low stone wall sections get away with it because they are only 7 and 12 degrees off level and are very simple. I find this interesting and wish I had the time to pursue it further. Good luck.

I see what you mean - you still get an A for effort, though. Based on your attempts and my own, I have a feeling it's going to require a new mesh from scratch (which is currently beyond my capabilities)

I may try this when I get home tonight. Looking at wetblanket's example. I'd guess that splicing half an arch from the two pieces either side with the sloped top (skew the paraqet only) would work quite well. The detail course on the column is an issue, just for the UV map.

I think so yes. http://imgur.com/IzYSx is what I had in mind, double the width of 'castlewall01' and maybe with a central buttress or other detail to make the texturing easier (as you may know that mesh uses different textures at different heights, with a visual break you don't have to try and make them match up).

Wasted a lot of time trying, but I can't import the meshes to start on this. I have no problem with character or clothing meshes, but architecture meshes always fail.

Ah well - thx for trying! I also tried doubling the bottom two nodes on the existing wall mesh (to make the wall twice as high without affecting the top), but that stretches out the textures as well.

I think that instead of simply making a non-detailed wall piece like the one shown in the previous concept, a non-distorted arch should be added in the middle instead. If you split one column along the middle, you'll see two arches coming off of it, one on its left and one on its right. Simply make the arch start higher up/further down on one side to accommodate the shape of the slant without warping the shape of the arc itself. http://oi43.tinypic.com/2ntbexh.jpg There's a simple picture describing what I mean

I agree, just haven't been able to get it working so far. Definitely gonna keep trying though.
