Mesh/texture question

Simple question: If you have a mesh or texture from one mod, say, Textures/Creatures/CreatureTexture.dds, and you want to use another texture from another mod for that same object/creature/whatever, you can use it as long as the names are the same, right? Because the path for the object/creature/whatever points to that mesh/texture?

The reason I ask is because I saw some fantastic textures for golems in a new mod, but I didn't want to use the whole mod (it adds a ton of new monsters, but since I have FCOM, I've already got most of them). So, I thought - hey, I can just substitute the textures and it should work!

Yeah. My golems ended up being invisible, so I reverted to the old textures... but they're still invisible! What did I do wrong? :(
