MGE help...

Post » Wed Jul 04, 2012 12:47 am

I'm sure this has been posted a million times, but I've had MGE working about a year ago. I did a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate and formatted my computer. I have .NET 2.0, Dircectx 9.0c (June 2010) and Visual C++ 2008 Redist. (English) installed as far as I can tell.... I did fresh installs of morrowind, then tribunal, then bloodmoon... I have plenty of horsepower to run it yet I get this when trying to run it... "MGEgui has stopped working"
Here's why I think...
Description:
Stopped working

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: MGEgui.exe
Application Version: 3.8.0.0
Application Timestamp: 4986f689
Fault Module Name: KERNELBASE.dll
Fault Module Version: 6.1.7601.17514
Fault Module Timestamp: 4ce7b8f0
Exception Code: e0434f4d
Exception Offset: 0000b760
OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1

Any ideas? I've loved this game and played it as a kid but would love to get it running with the 2012 overhaul/MGE at the least :/

Not sure if related, but for Directx9, did you actually unzip the archive and run the DXSETUP.exe ?
A lot of people forget this step.

Also, here's the official http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1240985-morrowind-graphics-extender-mge/ with a FAQ

EDIT can't post links::: Is where I got Directx 9.0c. It came as the file "directx_Jun2010_redist.exe" I ran it, accepted terms and conditions, and it asked me to browse to a folder to extract it's contents to, so I made some Bull**** folder on desktop and extracted it to it. I have a virgin install of morrowind (backup) that's untouched by mods and that works for just playing, but my full install in "bethesda/morrowind/" that contains the mge won't even start morrowind now because it requires to configure mge, which wont start... I NEED TO GET MGE WORKING :'(

Probably this has to do with UAC / administrator mode. Most important: make sure Morrowind is installed in your own folder like "C:\Morrowind" and not under a Windows folder like "C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda" or something. Windows is full of tons of hacks to deal with 32-bit/64-bit programs and account security and "Program Files" is just not going to be a happy location.

Also, try running Morrowind once in regular mode, and then also with Run As Administrator. Then do the same with MGEGUI.exe. This fixes things IIRC.
I think I ended up just running everything in administrator mode to avoid bugs.

Sorry, UAC is difficult to program for, so people writing free programs like MGE typically don't devote tons of time to working with it or testing and they depend on you to figure stuff out.
It will work in the end, don't give up!

And no offense to MGE users/creators, but I think MGE has been superseded by MGE XE: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1375740-shelter-from-magnus-blaze-10-mge-xe/
I believe you will find MGE XE to be more stable and easier to setup. It requires a fairly recent video card (from last few years) though.
