MGE Screenshot thread #4

Post » Wed Aug 26, 2009 10:26 am

Morrowind with MGE and mods looks better than many modern, commercial games.
Seriously, like 100 times better.
It's all about the feel...

Vality's screenshots from Solstheim (page 2 or 3) are VERY good. Dark forests look always good. I wonder how good rig is needed to run such effects and all with consistent 25fps+. I think i have a too weak processor (probably graphics card too, laptop), MW doesn't take advantage from dual-cores, yes?

Wow, I've been gone a couple months, and missed this....... Seriously, Vality, if you ever finish this project of yours, I'd pay for a chance to play in that world of yours, it is simply gorgeous to say the least, those shots are more impressive to me now, then the first shots of Oblivion were to me 5 years ago, and that is saying something indeed. :tops:

Oh, and just to stay on topic, http://img692.imageshack.us/i/inthebeginning.png/ is an oldie, but one I actually like...heh.

Correct me if I'm wrong... but most of screenshots present in this thread looks like they were taken in environment specifically made for taking screenshots. I mean, there are panoramas that can only be seen from levitating somewhere you have absolutely nothing to do, there's lighting that may give you respectful nods in an art class, there are colors that you won't normally see without an acid trip... but do you really like to *play* with all these exotic settings? What does your game looks like when you launch it not thinking "Today I'll make screenshots so damn cool, like hell this can be done without MGE", but "I have few free hours today and I want to spend them in Morrowind"? How does MGE improve your game when you're not trying to look unconventional for other people's amazement and give your graphic card a serious challenge, but just want to play and have fun with it?

Mind you, I quite appreciate what Improved Water Shader makes to water. AA/AF perhaps improves the quality as well, though the difference is rather subtle for me. Maybe even Distant Land has it's uses... at least, when not overdone. After all, Vvardenfell is supposed to look big, much bigger than its actual map is in reality. Seeing Vivec from Seyda Neen's shores may be an amusing experience, but it's not the way this game was supposed to be played. But oh well. Let's say that a bit of Distant Lands is for the better too. And definitely support for new resolutions is a must with modern monitors. But the rest? All those shaders that do crazy thing with the picture, do you *really* use them?

Kir, the name of the thread isnt "screenshots", it's MGE screenshots, so obviously you're gonna see shots where people want to show of the capabilites of MGE and it's shaders.

I'm not sure what you mean with "crazy" shaders, got any good examples? And the game is not meant to be played like this? Um, the way i see it this is exactly the way the game should be played, a way for people to tweak the game exactly to how they want it to be. For me Bethesda's games without mods has never been "how it should be played", rather "here are a few examples of what you can do with the engine/editor, please continue improve upon it".

Well, it is the MGE screenshot thread. That didn't used to be possible, so now, with the ability to bring the game to these levels... Yeah, some of the configs aren't really playable (all my shots are from play-testing shaders, and some, like Vality's, would be playable, but there are extreme ones), but at the same time, this thread is for artistic expression. You want real in-game shots from people who play, there's another thread for that. This branched of the scenic screenshots (which were all rigged), to showcase MGE. That's what it is really, an artistic showcase. So, ya gotta expect some ridiculous set-ups. ;)

However, there have been shots that were set up, but looked absolutely amazing. I regularly check this thread, trying to find a top 6 to use as the official screenshots to represent MGE to the world. I think I have 3, at the moment. :)

Edit:
I know what you mean, but unfortunately most people here have played morrowind so much they dont actually play any more smile.gif

And this is also unfortunately true, for some. There comes a point where the CS is more fun than the game (hence the occasional reference to the CS and testing engine).

Having browsed through I can't really agree; there are some regular snapshots in the thread, but I do know what you mean.. the shots where it's really dark so you can't actually see whether or not an effect is worth it are a bit silly.

I think it makes the game environment a little more pleasant,

I don't think you could even see Vivec from Ebonheart originally which is absurd when they're right next to each other. I keep my view distance pretty low a) because the game was designed (even in it's huge scale) to be pretty compact (you can definitely have TMI when it's set too high), and B) because the mist adds atmosphere and plays a part in subdueing the subtle repeating textures and lack of bumpmapping.

Same for me. I use a MGE view distance of 4. Looks just fine. :)

As for 'HDR/Bloom' I'm a newb to MGE and settled on the first one (built into MGE 3.8) I liked, aka: GIMP Bloom V1.

Peachy should use it for one of the "official" MGE pics. For the high lol quotient.

Looking at all the wonderfull shots with MGE I hope some of you enlighted souls could make a sort of tutorial for MGE with actal expliantions of the functions and the performance hickups tips & tricks. Some of those shots look even better than Oblivion

Bookmarked and in the running. ;)
The problem I'm having is that there's 4 threads full of MGE pics, and Sourceforge allows 6 screenshots. I've been bookmarking the best (in my opinion), and some that show off MGE's features best, and running them by phal for his opinion as I find 'em. It's not easy picking, though.

You just want a general tutorial on what does what and how to set it up?
