MGE XE water shader question

Post » Mon Oct 17, 2011 1:02 am

Is there any way to get dynamic ripples/waves working with MGE XE? I had it working fine with regular MGE, but when "upgrading" to MGE XE, I can still set the wave and caustic strength, but the tick-box for dynamic ripples is greyed out. Is there an updated water shader I should have installed? I apoloize if this is covered elsewhere, but I have been unable to find the information.

I feel stupid, but after reading the "readme thread" I just noticed that dynamic ripples were cut out for MGE XE. Shame, but I have my answer.

I agree, it's a shame. I've hoped for dynamic ripples and 3d water waves to get added to XE for quite awhile now.

Indeed; the "waves" effect is one of the best water effects i've seen in any game. Regardless.....it's hard to go back to MGE with the improved performance and awesome dynamic shadows in MGE XE.

Has anyone found a way to at least make MGE XE's ripple effect a bit more pretty?. There must be something that can be done about it

Not saying I would understand anything about how to code water ripples, but someone should really sit down and work on that :read:

I know Hrnchamd was thinking about improving XE's water shader, but apparently his card doesn't support some dx function he needs to add 3D water waves or something like that. He talked about maybe adding it and having the community test it or whatever.

Unfortunately, no one else can do it right now because afaik Hrn hasn't released XE's source. Even if he did, I have no idea if there is anyone around with the know how to add water waves etc, but I suppose it would be a step in the right direction. Not sure why Hrn hasn't released the source yet, I'm pretty sure MGE's original license requires that he do so. I imagine he has a good reason though, whatever it may be.

The source code for MGE XE was not released and I am assuming that for the 3D waves to work, there must be some programming on the DLL end of things in addition to the shader files. I'm sure that in time Hrnchamd will either release his code (perhaps opening another SVN for his fork of MGE) or release some new revisions of it.

Personally, I can't go back to MGE after having MGE XE. The shadows and the high quality shaders are just too nice to give up, in addition to all the other incremental improvements.

Yes, you kind of exchange the water ripples for the dynamic shadows, which is really worth it. I'd still enjoy both though :D
