Microsoft not using blu-ray in next generation console

That is bad news, very bad news indeed. Microsoft managed digital distribution?

Unless you LIKE paying £60 for new games because you only can buy them from mircosoft directly of course :D I see no benefits of consoles next generation, you'll still have to install, you'll require a decent broadband, you'll need to pay a large surplus for games and be gouged for money at every oppurtunity. Bill gates admitted the xbox is a more controllable PC, so that's what you get for supporting it i guess.

I hope it isn't true, but if turns out to be console gamers are screwed. Unless the ps4 works out to be far nicer :D which would benefit everyone! If the xbox 3 tanked out of existant, they'd take the constant bribing by M$, the enforced restrictions on games so that every single game ever is always on it, the escalating prices would steady due to PC gaming having a bigger presence, making customers see that paying £30 for a game isn't on. Actually, this may all turn out to be a good thing, as long as enough people don't buy the thing.

I think that will turn to be true and I would not buy it. I think they may even try to pull a on live type deal too. This is why I don't like steam, because it's trying to push internet to hard and if this type of thing gos for PC as well then I will buy alot less games. I think steam has made more not buy the/a game then made buy it. MW2 was the most or one of the most downloaded games ever for free if you know what I meen. About 2 years ago I would have never guessed so much of the PC games coming out would pull internet at all times drm. It was all good playing RTS and some FPS with out needing internet. My internet was just doom back then. It's better now, but still go's out 1-2 times a week.

I like 3DTVs, because you can still see 2d things and that will not die for at lest 10 years. But going into a store and buying a hrad copy that does NOT need the internet is geting hrader by the day.

If both xbox 720 and PC do this then I hope PS4 will not. If it's the last one that does not need the internet to play games at all then I may buy it. I have a good PC, but that does me no good then the buggy app called steam will not let me play my game.

P.S I was going to buy civ 5, but steam just seems too buggy to use with such a game so now I wait for some big bug fixs.

I think MS are correct in their direction as discs will eventually be phased out just like tapes were and digital distribution will be the norm, however, i think they're possibly jumping the gun as exclusive digital distribution is still a way off. The majority of household internet connections wouldn't be quick enough or have enough quota for that level of use yet.

That being said, who cares about Blu-Ray as a gaming format? It's not as though games are utilising that 25-50GB of space. Sure, some 360 games come with 2 DVD's but it's not as though you have to use both more than once so it's the same end result as a single Blu-Ray disc.

@tomtom, do you like having to pay £60 for all your games due to lack of competition? This is microsoft we're talking about.

Still, i guess you're the kind of guy they'll love, as they milk you for every last hard earned dollar.

No no no, you have it wrong. It was $50 for the first console generation, $60 for the current generation, and it will be $70 for the next generation. :O

I wouldnt be surprised if that happens.

Honestly, DVD's are just fine for video games. Most video games only use up to 12-15GB of a discs space anyway, and you can use two discs (one for multiplayer, one for singleplayer) if you need more space anyway.

What the next console generation should really have is an ability to install your games, so you never need to put a new disc in for each game. Not using BluRay is not a mistake by Microsoft, its a good decision in my opinion to keep costs low and not overstock on unnecessary hardware.

Who plays Xbox 360 anyway... still no Crysis or Warhead released for Xbox or Ps3... never was never will be ;-)

I bet for the next console gen to appear in 3-4 years...
And then they will only use mediocre hardware compared to the high end pc segment @ that time.
As always...

@The Comfy Chair
I ment that I don't really give a **** about consoles.
Also, the DVD form of distribution will stay around for at least 4-5 more years.Besides,PC games are always cheaper.

Well install to HD is availiable. The main problem would be verifying if you actually own the game. If there was no verification some places offer free rentals for a certain period, you go just go rent all of the games, install, return and there you have a load of games for free. One thing I don't want is serial codes D:

well if microsoft thinks i don't want to own a physical copy of products for their system anymore then i'm not exactly sure if i'm interested in a physical copy of their next system either.

shame, really, i liked both xbox and xbox 360 better than their japanese counterparts with all their racing games and beat'em ups and their too-unreliable-for-FPS anologue sticks ;-) (seriously, i can't aim with those half as good as i can with a 360 pad). guess, i'll go back to PC gaming entirely once the 360 is abandoned by publishers.
