It's not "automatically" updated, It's just set as a "recommended" update, so as long as you have automatic updates turned off, it won't download, just make sure you check what updates are being asked to be downloaded. As soon as they set it to be included in windows updates a while back I turned my automatic updates off due to a small data cap(5gb) that would be totally wrecked for the entire month if it downloaded.

It is pretty annoying that they feel the need to do this, it's extremely pushy, but it's worked, a large chunk of people have already upgraded.

How can anyone think it′s good to be forced to change to Windows 10? Especially when it contains so much spyware that not only slows your computer down but also takes up bandwidth. And if you′re on a slow connection and/or have a data cap, it really does become a problem.

Free people shouldn′t be forced to anything. The moment we are forced is the same moment we′re no longer free.

You go to Control Panel > Windows Update and from there you to go settings where you can turn off automatic updates. At least if 8.1 is similar to Win7.

Yea Windows 10 might be free, but i seen it on my friends computers there's nothing really great about it. Yea you might get some new format, some background changes and things that only work with windows 10, one day i think microsoft will make windows 10 for certain games. Thanks for telling me how to turn the update off Mirocu.

Windows 10 does not contain spyware.

Here's the thing, you're not forced to use their software, that is a choice you made and the developer is well within his right to expect you to upgrade to the latest version available.

There is a very good reason why Microsoft is trying to get everyone to use the same version of Windows (The latest version). First and foremost is security. Remember Internet Explorer 6? Microsoft didn't force people to upgrade and what we got instead is a massive amount of their userbase using outdated software riddled with security issues, not to mention that it couldn't render any modern webpage properly. Anyone who claims that Windows 10 lacks security is delusional. Viruses are essentially a thing of the past for the average user as the chance of you getting one without installing it are next to none. Almost none of my friends even have a antivirus software installed, and no one at my old job had one, I don't either. I still run a virus scan every couple of months but I haven't found anything for over 4 years.

Most people who think they have a virus actually have some form of adware or spyware installed on their system that most likely came bundled with some software they installed, as a lot of free software you find online contain some 3rd party software, like browser extensions and various "services" that interact with your browser.

Viruses rarely target personal computers anyway, as the risk/reward for those who create them is laughable. They get most out of botnets and adware anyway. The big scary viruses of today target government networks and such, not the personal computer of some random joe who mostly plays games and watches youtube videos.

Upgrading your computer regularly is also extremely beneficial to developers since they don't have to worry about compatibility issues with older systems. Anyone who has done any development is perfectly aware that trying to make their software compatible with out of date systems is both time consuming and frustrating.

You don't see people complaining about automatic or forced upgrades with other software, your browser installs updates automatically and most people don't even know it. Steam installs its updates automatically too, and if you don't go along with it you can't use Steam at all.

These big companies don't push their updates on people because they are trying to ruin your user experience, they do it because they are trying to stay ahead of those who intend on exploiting security glitches, and most of the time they are successful in doing so.

So do yourself a favour and keep your computer up to date.

Yeah you can stop it. It tried to do it to me and I got it to stop, and my heart almost did stop in the process. If it does, my old copy of 3DS Max will be unuusable as will a lot of my other software and possible my Adobe CS6 bundle. I will be up the creek without a paddle if that happens.

Hi Exorince! :wavey:

:wavey: Hiya Archie! The Adobe CS6 bundle works perfectly on Windows 10, at least it did for me. I upgraded to Adobe CC last christmas though, but I was using CS6 before that.

Don't know about 3DS Max though, haven't used it since Windows 7 was released, and that was a relatively recent version of 3DS Max (Student edition though).

Windows 10 is similar enough in architecture to Windows 7 that if it worked on W7 then there's a very good chance it works on Windows 10 as well.

My Adobe CC subscription is £8 a month and I always have the latest version of Photoshop.

For everyday use (including games), W10 is not a big change really...

If it's working correctly, just stay with 8.1! (there is nothing wrong with W8.1)

It'll happen through a Windows Update. Just as well I don't do those.

If I wanted Win10, I'd get it, but the fact is I don't

Well. That's very stupid of Microsoft since with every Windows version, there's always the chance of things flat-out not working for that version.

I actually tried out Windows 10 for a day and hated it to death because most of my own stuff wasn't working. (For example, a lot of my Steam games were refusing to play. I get a black screen then a crash with an error pop-up). So I rollback to Windows 8.1.

If my stuff isn't going to work in the new update then it is not an update. It's a downgrade.

Even Microsoft wouldn't force you to do that. It's up to you to pay attention to what you do, especially concerning updates. W10 will be proposed among the updates. If your computer is set on "automatically install the updates" and W10 is installed against your will, you can go back to the previous version of Windows. To avoid this kind of disagreement, set Windows Update to "Search for updates but let me choose...". When the update shows up, right click on it and select "hide the update". I did that months ago and the update never came back. ;)

Not that I do a lot with my computer these days (gaming/internet mostly) but I have yet to find anything that doesn't work on W10 that I have wanted to do.

I also used https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10 to silence it immediately after (clean) install. There are other programs that do the same as well for those concerned with privacy issues.

I'm getting annoyed myself of people saying Windows 10 is spyware or Windows 10 is spying on you or Microsoft is spying on you with Windows 10.

I 100% agree with you about the updates to update to make sure you stay ahead to have the security exploits fixed.

These are one of the reasons Microsoft is not allowing Safedisc and SONY's SecuROM on Windows 10 at all.

Collecting data without clearly telling about it beforehand and without letting the general user know about it beforehand - I′d call that spying.

As others have mentioned, it will automatically download, but it won't automatically install.

I don't think Windows 10 is "spyware" any more than Google Chrome is. That said, I don't like the fact that the privacy statement includes an option for Microsoft to share "telemetry" and usage data with law enforcement agencies should they choose to do so. Not that I do anything illegal with my PC...I just don't like the possibility of being profiled by the NSA (ok, a little bit of tinfoil hat here, but I'm just a little sour about it), not to mention the internet bandwidth being used for things I don't care about. Of course, much of this can be turned off or blocked for now, but I'm not a huge fan of the idea of my OS constantly trying to "phone home" with "telemetry" and usage data.

I think it's probably inevitable that MS will railroad everyone into upgrading at some point. I'm still on the fence about if/when I'll do it and which machines I'll do it on. It's likely that I'll just end up upgrading and then spending more time in Linux than I already do.

I'm sticking with Windows 7 until forced to upgrade. I'm not even sure you can disable UAC on the newer operating systems.
