Microstuttering.

Title and description say it all. I'd like to know how/when these will be fixed, and an honest answer as to whether Bethesda or Obsidian playtest their games anymore. It seems like they don't, judging by the hundreds upon hundreds of game bug threads. This will be one game launch to remember.

Is this micro stuttering because you have a dual GPU card (lower graphics quality to fix) or is this micro stuttering because your video card's RAM is full (lower texture resolution to fix) or because your system is short on RAM (get more RAM) or is it voodoo stuttering (Take plane to africa and meet witch doctor)?

I get microstuttering too, but I've gotten it since F3 so I'm used to it. Not unplayable for me. The unplayable part is the constant crashing :C

None of the above. Probably voodoo stuttering, or awful programming. I've got a pretty damn high end system, and I can max out any other game in 1600x1200 just fine, including Fallout 3. New Vegas just seems to be plagued with [censored] tons of bugs.

System specs:

Intel Core 2 Quad q6600 @ 3.0ghz

nVidia GeFORCE GTS 450 1gb GDDR5

4gb DDR2 @ 800mhz

Windows 7 64 bit

Last time I checked microstuttering is just something gamebryo engine does. Time to put it out to pasture.

It's because of none of the above and happens to 1,000's of people with the game.

How micro is this stuttering? Is it multiple times per second or is it every few seconds or every 40 seconds? Try running the game at a low res like 1280x1024 and see if the stuttering goes away. Maybe watch your harddrive activity light to see if it's in sync or open your Win7 resource monitor (performance tab of taskmgr) and let it chart log the hdd activity and let taskmgr log your cpu usage and grab a gpu usage log app to chart your GPU usage. If the game runs in a window see if it stutters in a window. Try running it with audio disabled.

See if there are any crazy spikes in your chart logs that may shed some more light on what is causing it.

Just try to single out all the possible causes because it's most likely one point of weakness.

You don't have a lot of ram (5 years ago it was a lot of ram) so maybe try freeing up some more before playing and disable any antivirii apps or other memory resident programs/services which aren't required.

You can free up ram by using the a visual basic script to allocate a lot of ram. It causes Windows to dump a lot of mem to the swap file freeing up ram, this probably won't fix it but who knows:

save as free3GB.vbs
FreeMem0 = Space(409600000)FreeMem1 = Space(409600000)FreeMem2 = Space(204800000)FreeMem0 = Space(409600000)FreeMem1 = Space(409600000)FreeMem2 = Space(204800000)FreeMem0 = Space(409600000)FreeMem1 = Space(409600000)FreeMem2 = Space(204800000)

then open taskmgr, double click and watch it allocate 3gb of ram and then release it

Are you honestly telling me I don't have a lot of RAM? I've got 1gb of GDDR5 dedicated video RAM, and my 4gb is more then enough to max out any other game I own just fine. Also, considering Gamebryo is a 5 year old engine, I'm pretty [censored] sure that my computer isn't holding me back.

Well, considering Windows 7 takes up 1GB of RAM just to idle, it really only leaves you with 3 GB of RAM or less depending on if you have any other programs running in the background. An average user with only 4GB of RAM really only has 2.5 GB of RAM free for other processes such as games. Not to mention you're using the older architecture of RAM (DDR2) compared to the newer architecture (DDR3), so it's, naturally, not going to perform as well as say 4GB of DDR3 RAM.

Your VRAM is fine, but the card itself seems rather lacking since it's basically a cost effective version of a lower model GTX. Though I wouldn't really know how well the GTS series performs as I haven't ever touched a NVIDIA card in my life.

I'm sorry to say, but if you really want to lower microstuttering on your end, you're probably going to have to lower your settings.

Also note above at what Neilsouth posted to, as it is a problem with the engine more than anything. So you really won't be able to get rid of it, but just lower how much it happens.

I've lowered the setting, changed them, and tried pretty much everything just to be let down. And for your information, the GTS 450 is about the same as a 5750/5770 in terms of performance, just far more power efficient. As I stated before, 4gb of DDR2 @ 800mhz is more then enough to max out any other game on the market provided your other hardware is up to par.

Interesting. I have a 5770 myself and I'm experiencing little to no stutter on my end. Then again, that's probably because I have 12GB of DDR3 RAM in my system and a quad core running at 3.4 ghz.

Yes, and as I stated, because of Windows 7 gobbling up most of your RAM combined with any other processes you may have running in the background, you may only have about 2.5GB for use in running the game. So while you may have 4GB of RAM in total, you only have 2.5GB or so for use in running other processes.

Anyways, it's more of a problem with the game engine, so you can only lower the amount it happens, not stop it.

This. I used to have the exact same amount before upgrading, and I felt like I definitely needed more because of how resource hungry Windows 7 is. Ever since I upped my RAM from 4 to 12, I've noticed most of my games have been running much smoother.

Just wanted to say that I have a gts 450 as well with win 7 64, i7-870, 4 gig ram and I get the stutter as well. When I spin the camera around its fine but when I'm running you can definitely notice the stutter. Same thing as in FO3. It's not hardware related as I have turned down every setting and tried the lowest resolution and the stutter is still there.

:spotted owl: i have a monster computer like so many and have the stuttering and latency. The latency appears when there is considerable game activity (e.g. big fight with many bad guys). The stuttering or poor frame rate is noticeable when you try to move. I changed game settings from "ultra" to "medium" and much of this went away, along with much of the quality of the graphics of course. Although I'm as upset as the OP, I prefer to enjoy the game and keep my fingers crossed that the developers will fix it but understand that I am not confident they will since Fallout 3 to this day crashes thousands and thousands of people. With FO3 they released a crashfest and it exists to this day.

It's this

I believe the problem seems to be related to a lack of synchronization between the rendering engine (possibly the movement or physics code?), and the video card. The fact that the FPS clamp fixes the problem, tells me that it is not a videocard problem.

You'd think they'd have fixed that in the 5 years since Oblivion was released. Also, I just booted up Fraps and seemed to notice that my FPS is being capped at 64 at all times, no matter the settings or resolution. Could that be linked to the issue?

Have you tried the dx9 dll fix ppl are suggesting? That may solve your issue too. If you've overclocked your GPU, CPU or RAM clock them back to normal and try that. I trust you've put in good effort searching the FO3 support forums. If you've already done everything that can be done then install a 2nd instance of windows (dual boot) and see if the prob goes away there. If it doesn't then log ur hdd activity and see what's going on, maybe it's hitting the hdd for textures and game data constantly and can't keep up. Ensure your hdd is defragmented. If it was fragmented terribly like my old flatmate's hdd then opening Firefox could be an adventure. On another note, I recall ppl saying their changes to the .ini files weren't being saved because steam was overwriting them or something. If you have to do any of the .ini tweaks, ensure they're actually being loaded and steam isn't buttphux0ring them.

The dll fix does nothing for this.

I've had it with Oblivion, Fallout 3 and now New Vegas. The only "fix" is the iFPSclamp "fix" but it introduces it's own more annoying issues. Slo-mo or "crack fiend" mode when the frames drop/rise compared to the setting used in iFPSclamp.

I've just learned to live with it hoping the next TES/FO game uses a new engine. Still not there unfortunately. :(
