Seems like a lot of work goes into these rations. Are they the most high-tech food around?

Dunno about high-tech, but I remember my brief stint in the Army, the food was definitely the best bit. The British Army has always been somewhat infamous for its second-rate equipment, but the food is the one thing they've never skimped on.

Are you talking about mess hall food, or field rations?

In the U.S., Regular Army food is great. Both mess hall and MREs(though stay away from the Tuna Casserole one, bleck!) are quite tasty
