Amata and Steven could scarcely believe what they were seeing. Was this really Susie Mack, the woman became overseer of Vault 101, and banished them forever?
No. It couldn't have been. It had to be some sort of joke. This was just too improbable to believe.
Steven started laughing, and pointed his gun at her face. "Haha. You're hilarious. Now then, tell us who you really are."
She didn't flinch. "I'm not joking. It's really me."
"Prove it."
She rumaged around in her pocked, and then got out a picutre. Steven recognized it immeadeatly: it was the picture he and his dad had taken at his 10th birthday party.
"My god...it really is you." Steven quickly switched from astonishment to suspicsion. "What do you want from us? We'd thought you'd forgotten about us."
"At first, we tried to. I mean, everyone hated you. After all, if you two and Steven's dad never left..." she trailed off. "But then we got the Vault working again. After a while, bad feelings went away. People started to miss you guys. We all felt bad that we forced you to leave. We've been looking for you for days. I guess I finally found you."
"All right." said Amata. "Why do you want us to come back? Have another problem you need us to help you with?"
"No..." she said, and she looked like she was about to say something important. "We...we want you live in the Vault again."
Steven banged the side of his head. "I must have dust in my ears. Did you just say you wanted us to live in the Vault?"
"Yes, I did. But not to lock you in there. We just want to see you again."
They looked at each other for a moment. Was this some sort of dream? The same Vault that had kicked them out after they saved all of them wanted them to come back?
"Please," she said, "come back."
"This," said Steven, getting a bit angry, "coming from the same person who kicked us out after we saved your ungrateful lives????"
He shot his gun up in the air. "I don't know why you want us to come back, but I don't care. We're done with that Vault. LEAVE!"
Susie looked away, visibly hurt. Steven felt extremely guilty as soon as he had said that.
"Hold on." Steven said, getting up and walking over to her. "I'm sorry. I just got really riled up. Has everyone really forgiven us?"
"Yes," she said quietly, "we all have. And we want you to come back."
"Well, it would be nice to see everyone again." said Amata, also getting up. "It has been 2 years. Alright, lead the way."
Susie nodded, and led them to the Vault. While they were walking, she gave them the history of what happened: after they left, the Vault slowly began to rebuild itself, under a doctrine of transparency and honesty from her role as Overseer. People were allowed to come and go as they pleased;dying wastelanders were occasionally let in for medical treatment. About 7 months after they left, people started to feel bad. They had left a lot of old friends behind, and as the years went on, more and more people wanted them to return to the Vault. Finally, Susie had ultimately opted to create a scout team to search the wasteland for them.
After many miles of walking, they finally made it to that impenetrable steel door with "101" imprined on it. Susie typed in a code, and the Vault door opened. Amata and Steven were thinking the same thing: this was going to feel akward.
