Minecraft Mod Help....

Post » Mon May 19, 2014 10:23 am

I don't play this game but my son does. He enjoys downloading mods for it. The problem however is that it seems all the mods for this game are strewn all over the net all willy nilly and on sites that are very questionable. You know the ones, they have the download link for the item you want completely hidden by thousands of other download links and you really need to pay attention to which ones you mouse over. Problem is, my son is 14 and he clicks on every single download link he sees until he finds the one he's looking for. Which results in hundreds of questionable programs being installed on his computer.

Every three months he starts to complain that the computer is slow and weird pop ups start showing up and then he blames everyone else for the computer issues other than himself. So then I have to spend a weekend fixing his computer because he's installed adware, spybots, malware and viruses all due to the shady sites he visits for mods to this game. Just last night I found 8 viruses and 40 adware/malware programs on this computer. So, my question is this: are there more known and friendly Minecraft Mod sites that I can make his default site? You know, something like a Minecraft Nexus or something? Also, is there any way to really restrict where he goes? I mean I've never used parental controls on his computer because my father never restricted my internet surfing but I'm seriously considering locking his rig down.

I came up with this: http://www.minecraftmods.com/

Not sure how reliable it is but it was the first link to appear in search.

I don't know much about parental controls.

I'd just download them from the official forum thread. I just assume all other minecraft download sites are dodgy, and most of them are.

You mean from here? The BGSF thread?

Oh they are dodgy, I've seen them.

No, the Official Minecraft Forums.

Most mods have pages there, with the download links set up by the mod authors.

Give him one of these next time he clicks randomly on DL links: :slap:

I know what you mean though. Lots of adfly links when downloading Minecraft mods (at least back when I played).

the easy solution is to tell him to start using "feed the beast" or technic mod packs instead of finding the mods on his own
