Is Minecraft Trying to Overtake Skyrim?

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 3:07 am

But mincraft has the worst graphics in a game I have ever seen, is only on pc, no story,no real combat. Mincraft would struggle to overtake a game like crackdown let alone one of the best games of this year

1. It isn't meant to have Crysis graphics. Graphics don't make the game.
3. I like how there is no a story. It is a true sandbox.
4. It isn't about combat. Since when does a game need combat?

No one said it should have Crysis graphics. It should be better then what it presents though. The fact that the graphics in Minecraft are atrocious does not equate to it having to have Crysis graphics.

I have reason to believe that the Minecraft release is meant to disrupt Bethesda, causing less profits to be made, as well as games. What do you think?

Well, everybody in my school talks about Minecraft, and if you were to ask them what the Elder Scrolls, Oblivion, or Skyrim were they would say, "Huh?".

Note: I am not saying MC is better, nothing can ever come even close to TES. :tes:

hm unlucky guy, at my school, at least all of my friends, know and play both

That's part of the game's charm. It looks classic, and the pixellated nature helps with the fact that the world is made of blocks.

minecraft is cool and all, but it won't overtake skyrim.

what do you even do in minecraft? play place the block and survive block monster. skyrim has a lot more going (i hope).

besides i don't think the creator had any thought of competing with skyrim. the date just sounds and looks cool.

As you may already know, Notch today announced that Minecraft would be officially released in 11-11-11. Does that date sound familiar? Well, that happens to be the date that Skyrim will be released. Now isn't that a bit suspicious? Let's look at some of the features in Minecraft. It has swordplay, bows, wolves, and crafting. Doesn't that ring a bell? I have reason to believe that the Minecraft release is meant to disrupt Bethesda, causing less profits to be made, as well as games. What do you think? Sound off in the comments below. :tes:

are you joking O_O. ive played minecraft its a fun game when you have nothing to do but it defiantly be better then any TES game. tbh the last part of your post is really open ended because its more or less standard in a lot of games... that's like saying is mac taking the internet from PC

Really? Another one of these. No, he said in his blog post that it's just a milestone for him, and that he want's to get it out of the way so he can enjoy Skyrim. So it's the other way around, he wants the main Minecraft final build released by then so he has time to play Skyrim.

are you kidding me? first off, in the very announcement, Notch even mentioned skyrim being released the same day, why would he advertise something if he's trying to "overtake" it. Besides tha, minecraft's release date doesn't matter at all really. The game is constnatly being expanded upon and tons of people play it already. Notch himself said it was more ment as internal milestone for the team.

Minecraft is a Indie game and notch isn't exactly dumb example of dumb is EA going against Activison with BF3 vs MW3

With that said Minecraft as a Indie the growth that it had in the last year is incredible compared to any game. Especially since the game has no story or real sense of what do to and still in heavy development today.

So please stop posting these threads.. MC been in beta mode for like 8 months now it was in alpha mode 3-5 before that and was always open to public PC only not multiplatform and can't be categorized in any genre really..

And Notch actually does enjoy RPG games such as Oblivion.. which part of the reason he made MC survival mode

Tons of stuff will happen on 11.11.11.

It's more like Bethesda is trying to outdo everything else in the world.

Arena is known amongst nerds. Several of my friends that aren't really into games have never played Oblivion,
much less know anything about Skyrim, however most of them have played Minecraft at one point. Of course the TES series as a whole will survive longer since
they'll keep making games but Skyrim will be forgotten by the general masses before Minecraft (I believe). Minecraft has made a bigger mark on pop culture than for example Oblivion also.

i know this thread is alot longer than this second page but i just had to say that if any tes game had minecrafts sales figures we would not see another game they would work on something else.

im not sure how long minecraft has been out (around a year yr and a half i think) but it has still sold less than two million games while absolutely incredible for one guy/small team that only really breaks even or maybe makes a little profit. just for reference heres what oblivion did in its first week http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/10/oblivion-records-record-sales-1-7-million-and-climbing/ . and thats the oblivion that everyone complains about. that is the difference between mainstream and indie game

Considering there is 0 advertisemants of MC and they sold 1840152 source http://www.minecraft.net/ copies already (in Alpha/Beta mode) that is remarkable compare to any game.. especially since its PC only

The problem with that thought is that minecraft isn't about story or combat. It's a game that allows you to simply explore a massive (8 times the surface area of the earth at max if I recall correctly) world and shape it with your own two hands. Given enough time, you could strip the world to its invincible bedrock shell. You aren't just given the tools to shape the world though, you must earn them, and then the materials needed to build whatever you want.

Then after you get done stripping down to bedrock that 8xRL world size you can go to the nether (a.k.a. hell) and start there.. and Texture packs especially 256x256 ones do make the game look better then some of the games today xD

Minecraft depends largely on the creativity and imagination of the player, unlike a lot of newer generation games that are designed for a culture that's used to being spoon-fed everything, with no effort required. Those with a bit of an artistic flair and some initiative will probably "get into it", while a lot of the more "action oriented" players will simply never relate or see any point to it.

There's probably some overlap between Minecraft's fanbase and that of DF and MW, but less-so with OB, and potentially very little with Skyrim.

Being another long-time gamer who's done some programming (some of that back in the ancient days of "punch cards"), and grown up with video games from their inception (I still recall the original "Pong" arcade machines, which were actually driven by motors and gears, not a CPU), I can "look past" the graphics to the unerlying gameplay, although "shiny" is certainly nice in its own right. I gave up on Legos decades ago, and now build historical, sci-fi, and fantasy architecture using plaster Hirst Arts blocks (and have a diverse collection of HA molds), which are paintable, a bit more versatile, cheap to make after the initial investment, and look a lot more realistic than Legos, but are similar in basic principle. What's not to like about stacking blocks?

The TES series has increasingly gone to more and more action-driven play, with less and less need for decisions on the part of the player, and sharply decreased difficulty in everything but combat and occasional "mini-games". Minecraft is a return to a "good basic game", although with primitive graphics, which simply holds no interest for the "adrenaline rush" junkie crowd that wants to run around slaying monsters and dispatching bandits in high-resolution detail, with the maximum amount of blood and gore that can fit on the screen.

It's not that Minecraft is trying to "overtake" TES, it's that TES is wandering off of its own accord into some other direction that many people won't follow. Minecraft, surprisingly, proves the point that "mass marketing" does NOT need to mean a "dumber" and more brutal game, and that you can draw a large fanbase without cutting-edge graphics or realistic combat. My question about Bethesda's obvious attempt at "mass marketing" is more along the lines of :

Is TES attempting to overtake Minecraft, Tetris, and other famous "parlor" games as "popular entertainment"? If so, it's failing. Just about all of my co-workers have heard of Minecraft; I'm not too sure if any of them would remember the names "Daggerfall, Morrowind, or Oblivion.

Nope, Minecraft isn't trying to overtake Skyrim, nor is any other game/movie/whatever.

Howeve, what I do believe is that Skryim is trying to do is replace and overtake in importance the 93rd Remembrance Day.

Sorry, why are we comparing Skyrim and Minecraft? Because they have the same release date? Good gravy.

Let's compare a skateboard to a pedalo! It'd be just as meaningful and worthwhile, by which I mean pointless and futile.

What does the question posed in the thread title even mean? Are they running in a race somewhere?

Only cool if you are born on that year (Like me, a few hours after I was born the NY Giants won the superbowl, which would be cooler if football wasn't boring) or if you are turning the age to be able to buy Skyrim this year. Otherwise a convenient Birthday gift lol.

If Minecraft is trying to overtake Skyrim it will fail. At least in the age groups 16+
