Is Minecraft Trying to Overtake Skyrim?

Post » Tue Mar 08, 2011 9:32 pm

Even that's not entirely accurate. They'll still be updating the game the same as they are now, they just want to be able to get to a point where they can stop calling it a beta. It's also the point when people who bought the game during beta (as opposed to alpha) will stop getting all future updates for free.

I don't think they'll ever have paid updates. That would just kill the games popularity.

That's a little different then updates. I'm not going to pay for bug patch. No one else is going to either.

Yeah Notch said content updates after release will be paid for people who bought after the alpha. Bug fixes and such will be rolled out to everyone.

God I hope not. That would be the worst marketing move they could make. I doubt Minecraft will sell many copies opening day... everyone who's into the genre will be buying Skyrim.

Actually Notch is on our side guys, he pretty much just increased Skyrim sales with this statement in saying that he was most looking forward to Skyrim.

check out his blog too

edit: also who cares? minecaft is an indie game that many people play alot of for a month then play occasionally for every week/month while skyrim is a massive big hit for this year,

Well, everybody in my school talks about Minecraft, and if you were to ask them what the Elder Scrolls, Oblivion, or Skyrim were they would say, "Huh?".

Note: I am not saying MC is better, nothing can ever come even close to TES. :tes:

Didn't vote. Games come out at the same time all the time. It just so happens these two line up. The only similarity is the open world aspect. Besides, most people have already bought minecraft anyways so I don't see the big issue.

Seriously, Minecraft looks like something I, of all people, could program - I know Java and enough OpenGL to make cubes. Of course, I'd use Scala and get it done much faster.

I don't play minecraft, and so obviously not by any means a "fan" of it, but I can only assume that you just made a *very* heavy statement. I think the key word in your post is probably the "looks." "Minecraft looks like something I could program"

How much have you played the game? The entire world is randomly generated, with multiple geological layers that have (often fairly complex) cave systems interspersed. Sometimes when you start a new game it gives you some really weird but cool formations like huge rock arches. Plus I think the game world is basically infinite in size, being randomly generated as you explore farther away from where you start. It wasn't something he made overnight. If you can make a game like minecraft, go ahead and get some $$$ ;)

No. 11/11/11 is a significant date on MANY people's calenders. There will be hundreds of thousands of weddings, the news will be reporting every baby born that day, video games will come out, horror movies will come out, books will come out. Minecraft is in no way trying to overtake Skyrim.

Everybody look at the quote. Someone is thinking logical here :P

The theoretical maximum limit of a game world in Minecraft is 8 times larger than the surface area of the Earth.

OR maybe Notch just wants to fully release the thing already so he'll have more time with Skyrim.

A friend of mine is getting married on 11/11/11. Oh noes! Do you think she's trying to overtake Skyrim?!

And I'll only briefly point out how bizarre it is to try to draw any sort of parallel between Minecraft and Skyrim. I can only hope that anyone who'd try to compare the two hasn't played Minecraft or any TES game.

Yeah..... the world is full of people who think they could've written Minecraft. Just like the world is full of people who think they could paint a Pollock or write a Beatles song. Funny that, somehow, none of them ever do.....
