Is Minecraft Trying to Overtake Skyrim?

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 10:27 am

Whatever vain pretenders it faces, Skyrim will crush them into the cold and bloody ice beneath its mighty Nordic boots.

@topic
No, not really. Especially as the Minecraft creator is apparently as excited about Skyrim as the rest of us.

Minecraft's a great game, I'll be surprised though if Skyrim isn't even better.

I'll be playing both for a long time, that's for sure.

P.s.: I hope to gawd that noone mods Creepers into Skyrim :flamethrower:

Skyrim would be clearly better if it hosted a fully Chop-able, mine-able build-able world.

I would be happy(er) if TES5 had some of the environmental spells from TES1.

Whenever I see 11/11/11, all I think about is The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.
We must thank those companies who have decided to hijack that important date to release their inferior products. So, 'thank you' for reminding everyone in the world to go out and purchase the best game of 2011, I'm sure Bethesda appreciate the free marketing.

do we need another one of these threads? the answer is no

minecaft is an indie game that many people play alot of for a month then play occasionally for every week/month while skyrim is a massive big hit for this year

I would argue that Minecraft will probably be alive and remembered for a longer period of time than Skyrim.

Anyway to the OP, no. Minecraft has probably already been at the top of it's sales and judging by the tribute they made to Team Fortress 2 I believe it's just a nerd homage to Skyrim.
And of course it's also a date people will remember.

I would defenitely argue that. People are still talking about Arena. Minecraft isnt nearly as successful or well known as TES if you ask me. All my friends know what Oblivion and Morrowind is, and none of them have ever even played it. On the other hand, Im almost positive none of them have ever heard of Minecraft.

That isnt to say my friends are the only demographics out there, but they play their share of video games. I dont think Minecraft will ever live up to the popularity and fanbase of the ES.

Arena is known amongst nerds. Several of my friends that aren't really into games have never played Oblivion,
much less know anything about Skyrim, however most of them have played Minecraft at one point. Of course the TES series as a whole will survive longer since
they'll keep making games but Skyrim will be forgotten by the general masses before Minecraft (I believe). Minecraft has made a bigger mark on pop culture than for example Oblivion also.

As you may already know, Notch today announced that Minecraft would be officially released in 11-11-11. Does that date sound familiar? Well, that happens to be the date that Skyrim will be released. Now isn't that a bit suspicious? Let's look at some of the features in Minecraft. It has swordplay, bows, wolves, and crafting. Doesn't that ring a bell? I have reason to believe that the Minecraft release is meant to disrupt Bethesda, causing less profits to be made, as well as games. What do you think? Sound off in the comments below. :tes:

Uhm, Minecraft has already been been out for quite some time. A buddy of mine introduced me to it half a year ago. xD

Not sure if you are joking or not.

But the current version is the beta. The official release is 11/11/11

Minecraft is available for download, in beta version, basically forever. Everyone that's playing it will pay for a full game, but not much will change other than increase a bit of the user base. I find it funny how two open world games with very fundamental differences will be released on the same day, born of so different development philosophies and children of so different times, but other than that, I see nothing fishy. 11.11.11 is a great date.

No. 11/11/11 is a significant date on MANY people's calenders. There will be hundreds of thousands of weddings, the news will be reporting every baby born that day, video games will come out, horror movies will come out, books will come out. Minecraft is in no way trying to overtake Skyrim.

The same has been true for every single year since the millenium shift.

1.1.1 (Do you remember "End of Days" and the Y2K doomsday prochecies?)
2.2.2
3.3.3
4.4.4
5.5.5
6.6.6 (Do you remember the christio-satanic doomsday prohecies of this day?)
7.7.7
8.8.8
9.9.9
10.10.10
11.11.11
12.12.12 (An alternate date for the 2012 doomsday / Nibiru / polar shift / galactic alignment hoaxes)

After 2012, we will not see another day such as this for another 88 years (at 01.01.2101), although we will keep seeing similar dates every year, such as 15.6.15 (european date; 1+5 = 6, meaning 6.6.6) and similar "magical" numbers. All hoaxes though, but we should all know by now how easily people are fooled by these hoaxes.

I played it once, briefly.

In Minecraft's defense I didnt give it a couple hour playthrough for a thorough review.

But I just couldnt get in to it. It seemed like a great concept, but the controls and graphics just kind of killed it for me. For some reason it just didnt snap with me. I had no urge to want to play it, or get better at it, or even see what all it had to offer.

And that isnt a flame statement either, but the honest truth.

Hmm.. I stopped playing with Lego 41 years ago, maybe that's why MineCraft doesn't appeal to me personally. * It's a bit of a kiddies game *

It's not a kiddies game. Anybody with an ounce of creativity in them will have fun with it, some of the things people have made in it are astounding.

Minecraft will not overtake the fifth installment of one of the best, most award winning RPG series ever. The end.

I like how people feel that they have to say that Minecraft won't overtake Skyrim, in completely serious tones. :D

Remember that the two games are not even close to competitors, that Minecraft won't be "released" that day (it's already released, that's just the date when they will stop calling it beta),
and most importantly that Notch said they picked the date because it's a cool date that many other games and movies also will release on.

Defending Skyrim in this scenario is like saying, "No, Ipad3 is not to overtake Skyrim". :P

It's also quite clear that OP is just having fun, comparing the similarities in both games in a funny way.
When and if Notch decides to add dragons to Minecraft, then Minecraft can really compete with Skyrim!
