Is Minecraft Trying to Overtake Skyrim?

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 10:21 am

As you may already know, Notch today announced that Minecraft would be officially released in 11-11-11. Does that date sound familiar? Well, that happens to be the date that Skyrim will be released. Now isn't that a bit suspicious? Let's look at some of the features in Minecraft. It has swordplay, bows, wolves, and crafting. Doesn't that ring a bell? I have reason to believe that the Minecraft release is meant to disrupt Bethesda, causing less profits to be made, as well as games. What do you think? Sound off in the comments below. :tes:

Or... Maybe they just thought 11-11-11 was a cool date and wanted to release it on that day?

do we need another one of these threads? the answer is no

edit: also who cares? minecaft is an indie game that many people play alot of for a month then play occasionally for every week/month while skyrim is a massive big hit for this year, and with probable GOTY capabilities so skyrim will be just as successful w/o MC releasing on that date too. another thing is MC isnt really releasing that ay it already is released thats more of a milestone as Notch said, its just the date that the BETA label will be coming off. and one more thing, Notch said he is looking forward to Skyrim on that date too so hes obviously a TES lover as well so im sure he, like everyone else just thinks 11-11-11 is a cool date

We picked November 11, with the unofficial tagline “us too”.

It’s the same date as a few other games and movies, and the one I’m the most excited about is Skyrim, so that will be a nice reward for me if we actually manage to hit that date!

Also trying to ride on Skyrim's coat-tails is the fantasy-action movie Immortals. How dare they! :D

I seriously doubt that Minecraft would disrupt Skyrim's sales. Mainly because Minecraft is a download only game and it runs on java.
Notch said that he was excited about Skyrim releasing. I think he is doing that out of respect for the game, and wants to give gamers even more to look forward to on that day.

There is also a movie coming out on 11-11-11 called 11-11-11.

I imagine a ton of stuff will be released on that date. It markets itself.

Uncharted 3 released 11.1.11.

There's a thread for this already. What's going on today?

No. 11/11/11 is a significant date on MANY people's calenders. There will be hundreds of thousands of weddings, the news will be reporting every baby born that day, video games will come out, horror movies will come out, books will come out. Minecraft is in no way trying to overtake Skyrim.

This.

Whoever set that date for Minecraft probably doesn't even know what the Elder Scrolls is.

1) Why would they hate Bethesda enough to disrupt their sales?

2) This would also mean less profit for them.

3) Skyrim will easily overshadow Minecraft, it's a dumb decision on their part.

4) What's Minecraft?

Maybe instead of assuming hes trying to overtake Skyrim, we should assume he wants Minecraft done and released - so to be free of Minecraft worries, and able to concentrate on a 148 hour Skyrim-fest without any distraction.

minecraft is basically already done and released. 11/11/11 will just be the "official" date when work is done on the game.

It's an indie game. Huge phenomenon. (actually.... "What's Minecraft" makes me want to ask if you've been under a rock for the past year. :D)

But not so huge that it would have any bearing on major game sales.

And anyway... most Minecraft users right now (it's technically in "Beta", but...) have already paid for it. It was $10 during Alpha, for lifetime updates.

First off, Minecraft has actually already been released. They already have 1.8+ million sales. All there doing on 11, 11, 11 is taking off the "Beta" part of there title.

Even that's not entirely accurate. They'll still be updating the game the same as they are now, they just want to be able to get to a point where they can stop calling it a beta. It's also the point when people who bought the game during beta (as opposed to alpha) will stop getting all future updates for free.

Yep. That's not paranoid at all. And swords were Bethesda's idea.
