mining and wood cutting

Post » Tue Nov 10, 2009 10:29 am

any guesses as to how much ore or wood will weigh and how much you will be able to carry in one trip?

as said in another thread the addition of pack animals, carts, magic might be a big hit here!!!

All we know is that they will be performed in real time. I've been wondering how they are going to handle the wood with the inventory since they announced woodcutting.

I'm wondering how woodcutting will work. I'm afraid it'll be this:

1. Grab your axe.
2. Hit the tree.
3. Inventory opens.
4. Grab the wood.

Tho', I hope it'll be like this:

1. Grab your axe.
2. Hit the tree.
3. Tree falls down.
4. Grab the wood.

However, my latest 'theory' will cause an empty Skyrim.

in todds lates interview i believe he said you will click on the tree see one of several animations then a window will open and you grab the wood. he did not say if the tree fell down or not.

Things that are destructible can have a restore time attached to them, so that they restore to their original selves within a certain amount of time. Works perfectly fine.

I'd be surprised if we actually get to fell a tree in this process.

It's more than likely it'll be good old log splitting.

I guess it's going to work like Oblivion. Herbs and Fungi will regrow within days, unrealistic but there's no other way round it I guess.

This is starting to scare me, if they add in an online exchange system (and thank your prefered diety Bethesda won't), this game would be reduced to a very pretty RuneScape.

You can't cut trees down and you never will, because Bethesda never announced a tree growth system. So that is out of the question. You can only chop precut trees.

You don't need proof to understand the fundamentals of game design. Trees don't grow back so the game won't let you chop every tree down.

That's very interesting!
I hadn't dwelled on how they'll implement woodcutting untill now.
Deflorestation as way to bring down the local economy? If you cut down a tree, it should fall to the ground.
Interestingly enough, in the latest screenshots they showed us there were a couple of fallen trees...

Hmmm....

Maybe your hopes will come true!

Im figuring thats how a lot of these "jobs" will work. I wanted somthing more in depth than click/animation/inventory.

This is not at all limited to game design or technlogy or anything. It has been done in other games. Fluently in real-time.

sir i would appriciate it if you could take a little trip out of negativity town, you are bringing all of us dreamers down and i do not appriciate it.

has there been a tree growth system announced no, can it be done yes.

examples of how it might work ultima online you chop on the tree it does not fall down but replenishes it supply over time.

Trees take years to grow and I don't think even the most hardcoe fans play that long to see them actually grow and complain that they are not indeed growing..

On the other hand, I don't see the team allowing us to chop down forests (not that that wouldn't be a nerdgasm of the century)..

That's fine for other games, but the truth is that Bethesda hasn't shown us any of that so you shouldn't expect it.

After you knock those trees down, can you chop the wood and then carry it, or put it in your inventory?

No idea. Good question though. I'm guessing pick it up in the inventory, but it could also be carrying. In the trailer we saw someone (looked like a Bosmer or something like that) walking and carrying something in Riverwood.

I just don't want any menus and stuff, and it sounded from Todd like there wasn't any. Only for cooking. As long as it's at least that, I'm happy :P

What im wondering is. ... Now that we know that there are goin to "class based" jobs ie. Warrior stealth and magic where do things like building a bow fall? Its a weapon and todd said that weapons and armor smithing are more for warriors but the bow will most likely be used by a stealth based char.

Menus only pop up if you need to select something from your inventory.

He mentioned class based Guilds like pure Warrior/Mage/Thief, but I don't remember him saying class based jobs.

Imo Woodcraft/Bowyer or whatever should be stealth, based on bows being oriented to Stealth.
Mining/Smithing for warriors.
