Minor Complaints about the Inaccuracy of Dogmeat

Post » Thu Feb 18, 2016 8:52 pm

I have come to the conclusion that Bethseda didn't watch too many dogs when they designed Dogmeat. There are a few inaccuracies that been bothering me in a minor way. Not like, it's game breaking. But come from my experiences with both dogs and the few years I worked at a Wolf Sanctuary.

One Dogmeat runs really weird, ever watched a dog in real life or a wolf in real life. To sprint fast, they kick from their back legs. Half the time dog meats limbs are so gangly, and his hind legs so darn scrawny I'm like how does this dog actually run accurately?

Two Dogmeat's nails would not clack on hard surfaces. Wolves claws rarely clack on hard surfaces, I'm using wolves as my example for a reason, point is climbing rocks and hard surfaces keep their nails filed. The only reason our house dogs nail clack on hard surfaces and we need to cut them down or file them down is because they aren't out in the wild, climbing on rocks or hard surfaces all the time. I am sure Dogmeat's nails are filed down considering the whole of Fallout surface is hard, dog meat is climbing on rough, hard surfaces like cement.

Three; Can Dogmeat learn some more tricks besides lifting up his back legs? Come on if we can ask other companions for thoughts, and they have a bunch of different dialogue and comment on the places we are. Can we get Dogmeat some more tricks? Play Fetch with him, I mean actual Fetch kind of like the dog in Fable. Can he play dead when I point my gun's barrel at him? What about actually giving him a treat or something?

I think fetch might be to dangerous for the player since he might bring back the grenade.

Also I'd like to name Dogmeat. If I can name the other dogs I find around, I want to name my companion.

lol, well I was thinking with a baseball mate, not a grenade.

While I do see your point, this is truly a minor issue. Like really minor... I hope they don't waste time on this, but instead fix the more severe issues. And of cause NEW CONTENT! :D

I know, but it was driving me up the wall these little details that I finally just made a thread about it. It's more for fun than me actually being upset about it. :)

Wait the Lone Wanderer perk works, when you're traveling with Dogmeat? Isn't he considered a companion?

I just hate that they stuck you with a purebred german shepherd that looks painfully out of place and you can't even swap it for any of the like 5 other breeds in game.

Dogmeat doesn't even really look like a dog, especially look at the 5 breeds of Fallout. Which is weird. He looks kind of like a comical version of what a dog is suppose to look like versus the other dogs that actually look like dogs. lol.

Well, I'll check it out then. I made essentially a guy who only has his single animal companion and pacifies all other animals. Pretty hilarious when I am pacifying big bears that could rip my face offf.

Umm, there's a ton of dirt in the commonwealth, it's not all hard surfaces...

Regarding his movement, I think he moves too straight forward. Most dogs I've seen run at an awkward angle, which I've always found funny.

Otherwise, being a dog owner myself, I think they did a terrific job on Dogmeat.

Wow, it's not like Fallout 4 gives you really any other options to build unique builds and have different backstories for your character created by you or anything.

Sorry. Poking sardonic humor.

Couple more things.

1- Armor doesn't seem to add anything to his stats

2- Armor won't stay equipped when I "R" to take everything

3- He tends to get in the doorways and won't move for several seconds (which matters when someone is shooting at me)

4- He is a little stupid. I can't count the number of times he has jumped off a very tall structure. It is a good thing he can't die

Best thing about Dogmeat:

He doesn't run in front of my headshots like the other NPCs.

Armor is pretty stupid anyway.

Oooboy Dogmeat is now wearing an armor harnessed to help guide blind people across the street. Because that's going to do him a lot good.

I like how it protects the dog much in the same a woman's armor in fantasy games protects the woman.

My dogmeat always just disappears on me in the middle of combat sometimes. I'm like where did he go.

Have you ever seen the armor military dogs wear?

The heavy dog armor is actually decently designed and similar to the coverage of modern dog armor.

Also dogmeat is based on one of the developers dogs....so don't see how you can claim no experience with dogs.

I wrote the reasons why. It's not just dogs they should have looked at.

Well, it certainly doesn't look like modern dog armor. Trust me, have light armor on dogmeat and it looks laughable in comparison.

While I agree Dogmeat is not the ultimate representation of a real dog. I don’t think I want to see him hanging a [censored] while he looks me in eye, as my real dog always does. LOL

That said, Dogmeat is believable enough for me to always break off from combat to rescue him when I hear him getting beaten up by an enemy.

And when I see Dogmeat rip the throat out of a raider, I poke my real lazy [censored] Deerhound and ask, “why can’t you do that?” <_<
