Minuteman vs BOS settlements

Post » Thu Feb 18, 2016 7:04 am

I am playing a BOS ending post Institute (I am a Sentinel) and wanted to try doing some radiant BOS quests. (level 72)

After talking with Quartermaster Teagen I took the quest to "persuade" a settlement to donate food to the Brotherhood. This is the first time I did any of his special quests.

This was a minuteman settlement that I had linked to my other settlements. (I am still doing minuteman quests from Garvey as well) After getting a promise of the food I got the message that "Greentop Nursery is now a BOS settlement" Now I cannot use the workshop and the supply line has been cut.

Is this how it is supposed to work? Do I lose all the items in the workshop as well?

Well to sum it up, they probably feel betrayed by you. You come in and promise protection and saving the commonwealth and then you come again and demanding their food at gunpoint. Kind of a mixed message. It's one or the other.

Also i believe they have ejected you so I assume all workshop resources have been rendered inaccessible.

Yes and yes. But you are going all BoS and are already 72nd level do you really need settlements to worry about anymore? You could just move everything you want to keep to the Diamond City house and give all the settlements to the BoS to strengthen them. Just try not to think about how much all this might be hurting Preston's feelings though.

You can get them back, but basically you have to kill everyone there and start over with it.

That sound good gameplay wise but I have a feeling it might start a war.

I've never played it out, but it would be interesting to see what happens if every settlement the MM has is given over to the BoS. Does The Castle get taken? Sanctuary? I doubt it so there could be something left for the MM.

My biggest issue would be I love putting artillery in my settlements so I'd hate to lose those. BoS doesn't have any kind of helpful airstrike perk, just a taxi ride.

The threats is there couple guys in power armor with lasers show up and ask for a "donation" or more bluntly a tribute. Settlers really can't say no.

Not the only option. You can also pay them, which they agree to. You can even try to get the price lower and they can refuse (if your CHR is low) and force you to pay the full asking amount. So they have some say in it.

Sounds better, but would you still lose the settlement if the BoS paid them?

Sometimes they refuse that too IIRC. At which point your only option is to convince them to hand it over willingly, or shoot them up.

The quest is formally illegal within the BoS, as mentioned by the quest giver.

He actually never mentions it being "off the books" or "illegal". This was determined in another thread.

Here's the full conversation (somewhat out of order): http://imgur.com/a/Ios27

There's no indication its not sanctioned by Maxson, and indeed, Teagan even mentions teams going around later on to gather up the supplies.

Er No, there is a radiant quest through Proctor Teagan to supply BOS with food, your choices are....

to buy the crops (full price or discount).

to use your charisma to convince them that they would be better off with the BOS. (i'm sure there is probably a threatening option in the dialogue, but I simply sweet talked them into the deal).

to shoot everybody to claim the settlement.

All will successfully switch control to BOS so remember to loot the workbench first.

People seem to fixate on the using force method and ignore that you actually have two other options and it does provide a way to remove those annoying settlers from your control.

dunno, I remember taking that quest and him mentioning something about keeping it quiet. Maybe he says it if you select another option?

Granted, my memory might fuzzy and I didn't actually try to memorize our convo so I may likely be wrong.

I tried all the options. He never says that to my recollection.

The closest thing he says is asking the SS if they want to make some 'extra caps on the side' but that doesn't really indicate that its not official BOS policy.

I personally also have a hard time believing Protocor Teagan could requisition a number of verti-teams for an illegal mission without Maxson knowing about it.

Edit: Yeah, just went back to recheck. Everything he says is in the screenshot album. The only one that's missing is the "Maybe later" and "not interested" branches. In which he doesn't really say anything but "okay, let me know if you change your mind" basically.

It's probably necessary but not discussed among the crew for morale reasons. Recruitment wouldn't be too if people found out.

Meh. You hear Brotherhood soldiers saying things like "If you aren't Brotherhood, then you're nothing." This ain't old man Lyons' Brotherhood.

So I don't think their morale is going to plummet from hearing that some of their food stocks come from local farmers. Its a logistics strategy that armies throughout history have employed: subsisting off local food stores.

The MWBOS uses a similar method that has worked to wild success. Demanding resources and wastelander levies from local towns in exchange for military protection.

Yeah, when I was offered that quest it was what tipped me from siding with BOS to MM for the MQ.

Yeah but the difference seems to be the East brotherhood just wants food, tech and too eliminate the institute. That Airship won't stay in one place for long and then the Military protection will dry up except a few outposts. The Minutemen may not be perfect but they can't leave.

Maxson sure as hell won't leave until Commonwealth becomes a BoS Protectorate. This guy doesn't believe in "Leave after Done" philosophy, which he makes clear when he talks abut Madison Li.

And what exactly would you have done with the purifier? I agree with Maxson that Li was stupid in thinking that everyone would leave the purifier alone when the Enclave was defeated? Who would run maintenence and protection at the purifier if not the BOS?
