Mirror, mirror, on the wall...

Post » Wed Aug 10, 2011 3:49 am

I was going through a collection of resources today, and I came across a mirror. It's the first one I've ever seen among mod resources, and it made me realize, for the first time, that they're nonexistent in Morrowind. And it also begs the question: Is the creation of a working mirror in the game even possible? Obviously water is reflective, as are a number of modded objects, but there seems to be a limit with them. Can a mirror be made, to where the player stands in front of it in-game and can see their character in it?

If the answer is yes, and it's not as hard as I'm imagining it to be, then a whole new world of opportunities is about open for me I think, when it comes to assembling my various interiors.

EDIT: And no, the mirror I found did not hold any reflective properties. It just looked like a mirror.

Most of those games have some very different engines they're running on too, and have a LOT less crap in them than Morrowind.

Eh? Where'd Freddo's post go?

It was a stupid post, so I removed it :P

Been spending way too much time in the Skyrim General section lately, and so I started to write about the possibility of mirrors in Skyrim instead. Which, of course, is irrelevant here in Morrowind Mods.

You're right. Incredibly stupid. Bird-brained even.

I don't recall any NPC casting a reflection, just statics. While several modders have mirror-like statics that hang on the wall like big silver paintings, I've often wished they worked. In one or two mods, there are interior windows with slightly blurry screenshots behind them to simulate the scene one would expect to see. They're shaped something like the inside of a fishbowl to get the perspective. Perhaps a player could take a shot of their character from the neck up and do something similar with a mirror, but I don't see it working for a full-body shot . . . if the PC changed clothes it would just be weird and worse than no reflection at all.

It's a shabby work-around, but it's a start.

Hmm... kinda really shabby if you ask me. Not like I have anything better at the moment though. :P

At least if the mirror is fixed in place, you can make sure the background in the reflection is always right, that would help the illusion. Good luck! :D

Oh I don't really plan to work on this myself. I simply have too many projects lined up, and after I finish them, I'll probably be through with modding for a long time. :P

I know how that is. Every time I make a blunder or saved mod turns out corrupted, I have to put it down and walk away for a couple days. If I was churning them out the way some people do, I'd probably get burned out and never even play again.

Oh I'll be getting lots of actual playing time when I quit for awhile. More than I have in months. Kind of the reason I'm doing all these mods. :)

doubt it, water with MGE only has reflections because of distant land.
i'm not sure of any game that can reflect the character. (though i haven't played many games)

Do you suppose a plugin using the Aedra engine might work, Elaura?

Apparently, seeing yourself in a mirror in realtime in a game is a hard thing to do because not even the Cryengine 3 with its new Crysis 2 can produce this effect. Though with DX11, the Cryengine 3 can produce realtime mirror reflection of objects and NPC's(not perfect tho) but you still can't see yourself in the mix. This vid shows some Crysis 2 mirror reflection of alien npc and whatnot.

Maybe if you had some way to open a window like the PC portion of the inventory window.... I doubt it could be done with a regular mod, but perhaps someone like Hrmchnd could make such athing happen by hexediting the exe.
