The Fallout 2 Dogmeat was a descendent of the FO1 Dogmeat.

Dogmeat died in Mariposa in a force field, the one you see in FO2 is a special encounter, an easter egg.

Anyways Dogmeat in Fallout 3 has nothing to do with Dogmeat from Fallout.

On a side note, is Rex any good? I like ED-E's perk too much to try Rex, but ED-E is seriously lacking power, so...
