I'll miss grinding (for levelling)

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 2:27 am

Having been back thru OB everyday for the last few weeks and rediscovering how cool, illogical, buggy, sometimes challenging, it is, one thing I'm soooooo acustomed to was grinding to level up a skill. Who didn't run across the map casting 'heal minor' or 'summon for 1 sec' spells to bring up your charcter? Point is after reaching (100) I miss pogo'ing across Cyrodiil 'cause, since I don't fast travel, its kinda boring running thru the woods passed giggling Spriggans who aren't worth stopping to kill.

Grinding made no sense but it gave you something to keep you busy at least. I worry about this a little with Skyrim

How do you know you won't be doing the same thing in Skyrim?

AFAIK, you will still level up each of the 18 skills by performing activities.

I don't see how Skyrim would change the that at all? But if it is fixed, I won't be missing it.

You still will be able to do that, its just leveling wont be dependent on 7 or so of your skill pool. :foodndrink: :hubbahubba:  :toughninja: :sadvaultboy: :spotted owl: :obliviongate: :intergalactic:

It looks like all your skills will contribute to your leveling. So you won't be able to grind non major/minor skills without going up levels.

True you will need to use those skills but according to GI they restuctured leveling and removed the leveling exploits. I'm assuming grinding was part of that. I just don't see us hopping up and down like idiots anymore.

I think advancing from level 1 to 10 should be fast, maybe a good five or six hours of dungeon crawling. After that it would be increasingly more time consuming.

they fixed it in the way that you no longer were punished for choosing certain major and minor skills. This way around you can use whatever you wanna use , which is much much better

You mean like taping down the walk button in sneak next to where some guards sleep while you’re at work? :hubbahubba:

I won't miss it, It was boring sitting in a spot spamming one spell just to level up. I hope that isn't possible in Skyrim.

Folks did the same in Morrowind. Putting a weight on the walk key while standing against a wall and other such odd stuff. Casting a spell over and over to increase a skill. I guess what I'm saying if there is some exploit available folks will use it.

Of course, it's a single player game and so why would anyone care except the person doing it and if they want to do such who am I to diss them for it?

I liked walking out of the prison in Oblivion with any of the grindable stats near maxed. The only ones you couldn't grind there were Alchemy, Security, and Armorer.

you'll still be able to grind skills. How else do they level up unless by use.

I like training my skills. If you want to tape the controller down or whatever, that's your busi.
Granted, that is where I draw the line. If I'm not controlling the character myself or not actually playing the game, then I won't simply tape a button down.
But anything beyond that, heck that is what "training" means, doing the action.

Grinding made no sense

It made a lot of sense to me. In real life, if I want to build up arm muscles what do I do? I lift weights over and over and over. If I want to build up my cardiovascular system I run, everyday. If I were a real-life thief I would practice taking things out of people's pockets over and over and over until I got good at it.

It's what we do in the game too. Call it "grinding" if you want, but it's true to life, it's realistic. I call it roleplaying.

Video games are not real life. Many of us have real life jobs so we don't need our games to become a second job.

A fantasy role-playing game is supposed to take the form of a fantasy novel and make it interactive, immersing the player in a fantasy world. Heroic characters in fantasy novels are seldom depicted performing the mundane chores of real life. Why should the video game be any different?

Skill progression should be as unobtrusive as possible. It should occur as a natural consequence of adventuring in order to give the player a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment, however shallow that may be.

I sorta agree but its exploitable because OB counted the 'times' you did an action. A low cost (1) second conjuration was same result as high cost (45) second conjuration. You might say this was ok but it would make more sense to assign progression on total magika expenditure x time per school takes you up a skill point. Its still grinding but I'd rather be awarded for using magic more naturally. Now grinding something like marksmanship/blade/blunt wasn't really exploitable since you couldn't shoot yourself or knock yourself on the head. Same with security and sneak. Though does it really take a lifetime to become a master of sneak?

If by grinding, you mean repeating an action to gain skill levels, you can still do it, and you might even gain levels by it as well, which would be a nice opportunity, as leveling in Skyrim seems a good thing.
