Truth never lies. I've actually even succumbed to the temptation to use those dragon masks. I was so turned off by the thought of covering my face... but the enchantments are so powerful! In the end I caved, I play mostly 1st person anyway.

Yea well, with only one ring slot and no more pants, armor slots are at an all-time premium. Add to that the fact that helmets often have very high armor ratings and some of them have incredible enchantments... it's quite an unfair choice to have to make.
I'm not saying you are wrong, we do have the choice not to wear one. It's just a svcky choice because the lack of a helmet can really hamper you.
I have the issue of loving the way my character looks, but also loving the dragon masks. My next character is probably going to be a circlet/hat wearing alteration mage so I can see my face.
the exclusion of "pants/leggings" is imho a massive drawback, it seems "lazy" from my point of view. This could easily be fixed by allowing the armor to have double enchantment as standard, with the perk then raising it to 4 enchantments.
one ring? we have 8 fingers, 2 thumbs, the least we could of gotten was perhaps 2 ring slots.
as already mentioned, the option to "show helmet graphic" on or off feature would be nice.

It's not lazy, it was to enable the artists to create better looking armors. Separating the chest and legs created clipping issues and looked [censored], so they decided to restrict the player to only using matching legs/chest. With this in mind, I agree that it makes sense to have an additional (or double, if considering the enchantment perk) enchanting slot on them.
I put my helmet on my favourites list and just equip for battle and unequip when in town or in conversation with people. I think that's a pretty good compromise.
I don't understand why people are saying it's unfair to have to wear a helmet.. If you were going into battle you wouldn't say "I don't want to wear a helmet because I like how my hair looks today". A helmet is a standard piece of armour, if you don't want to wear one don't wear one. At least if you did walk around without a helmet on and a sabre cat ambushes you from nowhere, at least you can physically pause the game and equip one or like somebody said earlier, just favourite a helmet and equip it for battle. People want the game to be realistic and then they moan saying they want invisible helmets so they can see their pretty faces.
