Missing Start-up Menu

Post » Sun Jan 09, 2011 7:26 am

Good evening all,

I have a small problem. I start the game with the Fallout Mod Manager (the most current, and the most current FOSE and game patch also), and it loads, the music starts, and the sliding screens go by. But when the game arrives at the point where I would normally choose a New Game, or Load a Game etc, there is no longer a menu, just the background picture of the power armored person.

This is the first time in all of the years I have been playing Fallout 3 that I have seen this error. I immediately thought it must be the most recent mod update that I did, Marts Mutant Mod from version 5 to 6. and promptly uninstalled it. The error still occurred. The timing of the error would usually indicate a BSA loading error, the game is attempting to find a dependent BSA and is not. I checked the BSA lists against installed mods, everything there. I re-validated, my invalidation, just in case, still no go. I checked my master load order against recommended lists, nothing out of place. It would be less of a mystery if I had had a problem with the game earlier, but it has been running very smoothly and cleanly, until I tried to install the Mart's Update.

I always have a 'Last Working Copy' of my entire game, and a separate copy of the 'Last Working Data Folder' stored away just in case of emergencies. I pulled out my 'backup' data folder and placed it into the directory after renaming the current one. The game started up, made its way to the start menu, and everything was working fine. I started a game just to be sure, it ran perfectly, and I was very happy. I thought that all I had to do now was patiently re-add the missing mods and I would have by-passed this problem. The first mod I tried to add/update was FWE. The fomod installed well, I started the game, the music came up, the sliding pictures appeared, but not the menu. I uninstalled FWE and removed all of the components of the mod, restarted the game and the same thing happened, no startup menu's to load or make a new game.

I am about to go to my 'Fresh Start Backup' of the entire game or reinstall the game completely from scratch. But before I do, I have a question please:
1. Does anyone one know the actual detailed cause of this error? So that I may avoid it in the future. I am figuring that it is something that I am doing.
2. I have read about other people having this error, but no one has given them a solution. Is this a new phenomenon? Or, just new to me.
3. I THINK it is a BSA problem, but not being an expert, I do not really know. Am I even in the right area?

I have solved almost all of my past crash and freeze errors by diligence and asking sensible questions of sensible people. And until this problem my game was immaculate and running like a well oiled protectron. I would appreciate any and all help.

Thank you in advance,

Hannah A.

Greetings again,

A solution came when I read a post similar to mine from 'FatalChunk' on the Fallout Nexus Forums. Here is part of that post with my reply:

[Fatal Chunks Post from Fallout Nexus]

'The other day I decided to try installing fallout 3 again so I installed the game and loaded all my favourite mods (Fook2 and WMK) I installed both of these and the FOIP file for the two. I put them all in the right load order using fomm and created a merged patch with FO3edit. When I loaded the game (using the FOSE loader) the loading screen appeared but would not go to the main menu I waited until it reached the final slide but no options (new load options .ect) appeared I am sure its not my load order does anybody have any ideas on what I should do? What I had forgotten, until I read your post (FatalChunks), was that shortly, before I did all of the above I had also 'updated' my FOIP for WMK. I went to my game a few moments ago, pulled all of the WMK files off, ran the game and like magic the game and menu started right up!

Next I tried reloading all of the WMK files minus the "Weapons Mod Kits-Fook.esp" (No menu came up), then I also pulled off the 'Weapons Mod Kit- FWE Master Release' and the wonder of wonders, everything came back menus et al, and my lovely game. These two FOIP files I had just 'updated' yesterday. To get my game to work again, I had to pull them BOTH off. I tried several combinations with all of the WMK files, but it was only with both of these off that the game and menus reappeared. Thank you for the inspiration, and I hope that this helps you as much as you have helped me.

sincerely

I will continue to investigate. Specifically, if an older version of the FOIP for WMK Fook and FWE, will cause the same problem to reappear. And, off course, why this happens at all. But for now, I am able to once again play, fight and enjoy one of my favorite games.

Thank you all,

Hannah A.

I too have been experiencing this same problem. I have fose, fomm, fo3edit, and a ton of mods. i have been adding a couple a day for a week now.... after installing fwe i lose my menus and even have a hard time ctrl alt deleting it. i tried boss load order sorting, no help. fo3edit helped me sport out some conflicts, and got past the instant game crash i was having. eveything looks like it xhould work now but.... no menus, or cursor, did fwe add any new menu components? or something and its missing ? i tried recopying fwe from itz zip package. no luck.added wmk and its foip too, just to make sure, also using eve and its foip patch...

so what do i do?

anyone?
