MISSION MARKER

Couldnt they just make the journal entries more detailed and also allow an option to turn it off?

The voice actor wouldnt have to always say "turn left at the purple tree" - it could just give you a more detailed text in your journal.

this really did make oblivion a lot worse for me.

That's what I want. Also in the case of radiant story the NPC should give directions like "a cave nearby" and your journal could give the name of the cave along with directions of how to get there.

I like the marker. My only complaint about Morrowind were the vague directions which led me to have to search the countryside for an hour for the tiny entrance to a kwama mine or something. Or going the wrong way in a dungeon thirty times because I can't find the right stupid door to get to the next section. Those elements don't add to gameplay for me. They just get boring and cause me to want to stop playing pretty often.

Well I don't want some gameplay mechanic holding my hand the whole time. Just gimme the general area, and I'll do the rest. No need to point out the exact spot, ruins the challenge.

You know you can change your active quest if you really don't want to follow the marker, right?

From what I have gathered about Skyrim, they have heard all the fans' complaints and are trying to overcome Oblivion's shortcomings in Skyrim.

So this time they will give us proper directions for quest targets and either complete remove those blasted quest markers from the compass, or at least let us toggle it off, maybe by a mod, without any serious consequences. I hope.

And wander aimlessly without proper directions?

Exactly. I wish people would stop saying "change your active quest." OK I may not want to follow the marker but to do the quest I do need some kind of idea where I'm supposed to be heading.

I hated the mission marker. I found myself looking at it more often than the scenery. I much prefer how the npcs gave directions in morrowind. I really, really wish they'd get rid of it.

All signs point to this being out or optional. NPCs giving directions and even leading you to a path to point you in the right direction is confirmed.

I'd like the option for something in between. For example it could lead you to the general area of something and then you need to find it yourself.

It was not hard...You just needed to read and observe =/

Oh well,if we don't have our GPS,the game might sell less after all...I hope DDSv5* function could be turned off at least...
*Dungeon Detection System version Elder Scrolls 5 : Registers the dungeon entrances on your GPS navigation system before it's even in the view distance!Get yours installed at your local Imperial Vendor!

The thing is you don't have to have either GPS or no markers at all, there is such a thing as a compromise. I'd like to see them not have the quest marker on the compass and I'd like the quest marker to mark the location of the dungeon but not the objective inside. I don't feel like the Morrowind vague directions and you spend 40 minutes looking for this one place and come to find out it's in a recess in the cliff wall hidden away from the direction from Balmora you came from, so you had no idea it was there. That's not fun at all, that is annoying as hell.

1.its already been confirmed

2.you dont have to use it, and it is possible to play Oblivion without it you just have to pay attention to what people are saying

3.dont think you are all high and mighty becuase you dont like the marker

1. where?

2. No, the people in oblivion say nothing about where I should go. just very rarely.

3. I better not start a flame war, so ive decided not to say what i have in mind to you.

Easiest way to fix this without mods;

Track a quest that you have no intention of doing. Then move on with your life.

Done!

We could have the hyper confusing quest markers of fallout; new vegas. Just put three different possible objectives in a quest and you can no longer figure out where you need to go.

Getting rid of map markers will increase the need for conversations and comprehensive directions. Try asking some one on a street how to get someplace in the real world and see how good your average Joe gives directions. Even with rout markers and street signs people can't give decent directions to some place a few blocks away. Of course there are exceptions, and your mileage will vary.

the point is that is easier to mark a place on your map and guide you to it than to tell you to look for the twin needles then turn right until you see a big rock like they do in Morrowind.

That was the most frustrating aspect of that game and I'm actually glad it's gone!!

It's not a fail at all. Directions given by NPCs, rumored to even vary depending on how much the NPC likes you, provide a clear alternative to the quest marker system. Complaints about past games have no bearing on Skyrim when it's already confirmed NPCs in Skyrim give directions. Besides, other comments suggest many of the quests in Morrowind had bad directions too.

Directions are not given by NPCs most of the time and thats a fact, even if they do like you its just not scripted in them. just play oblivion, try it, and see for yourself. ( I know it for a fact because i tried to get directions who werent there about zillion times)
Morrowind did have HARD directions, not bad. they were just written in high speech level so not everyone got hem straight. I mostly managed to make my way to the quest, and when i didn't it was purely because i missunderstood the directions, but its not like they tripped me.

Can you please link me to where you saw NPCs giving directions is confirmed?

I'd like the option to turn off all markers to be honest. Just give me the compass.

This.^^ The option to turn quest markers on/off. Best way to handle it.

I hate quest markers. This is an RPG and I want think for myself, please. I don't want to be hand-held through quests. Quest markers made quests like mindless chores in Oblivion. I DON'T want to be a robot. Same goes for compass icons - which utterly removed the excitement of exploration for me in Oblivion. No longer did I have to think for myself or look carefully at the surroundings. All I needed was to look for dots on my compass. I hated it.

Instead, give more and better directions. Apparently, Skyrim also allows NPCs to actually guide you as well, which is nice.

Anyway, quest markers should be removed entirely from the game, or AT THE VERY LEAST be optional by a setting, so that those people that doesn't like being hand-held and that wants to think for themselves can do so! This should be a piece of cake to implement as a setting and probably take a developer an hour or something, and it would be so much worth it.

I really hope there's no quest Marker. I actually like following directions to find a place. Besides, I don't get lost, I just discover new places.

Yeah but I usually find places I'm not supposed to be because apparently I must have done something to the residents of said location due to their reaction to my arrival. :flamethrower:
