Mix Spells

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 9:42 pm

The dual wielding feature in Skyrim will potentially let us mix spells, but Todd Howard isn't sure about it because they don't know how they would pull off certain spell combinations and this thread is here to give them ideas.

Frost x Fire: Behaves like fire in that it stays burning into the environment and characters, but has the slowdown and lower damage properties of ice. So cold it burns.

Like Fable 3?
I would like to mix not only two spells but maybe even a spell and Dragon Shout.
Just imagine:

With two fireballs (one in each hand) you face a Dragon.
"FUS RO DAH!!!!" you shout as you cast the fire from your hand.
The dragon is thrown off-balace by the shout then hit by an inferno of flames.

Nice...

You use summon Deadroth and a fire spell to create a daedroth that blows up upon death or returning to oblivion after timer.

Ok here's my list:
- Fire & Frost: Enemies burn but are frozen in the once place.
- Fire & Shock: Enemies burn and are struck by lightning for the duration of the spell.
- Frost & Shock: Enemies are frozen in spot and are struck by lightning for the duration of the spell.

Now can we list different types of one spell?
(Fire can be a fireball or a ring of fire around player, etc.)

I dont know how they are going to go about mixing attacking spells, but i dont see a problem with the "on self" variety of spells. It would certainly become tedious having to cast multiple different spells on self for ages, but im sure the devs know this, and will be working out a great solution. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't create this new magic system and then realise "damn we cant mix any spells". The ideas and problems would have been brought up at the start and now they will be seeing how different things work best for the game.

It is like spell creation, when it was announced that spell creation may not be in the game i was horrified. But after listening to what Todd had to say i am now kind of happy with the fact they are trying to change it, because it really was like a spreadsheet like he said. I think there will be a new system in place for spell creation but not how we know it now, and also the possibility to combine some spell effects.

I thought that paralyze+shield could make a sort of force explosion if it were cast as a target spell.

I think that it wold be much better if two elements gave a third one when it comes to destruction spells.
Would make stuff much more interesting in my opinion.
These should be an advanced elements and should be a bit stronger than two elements they are composed of, but should also have some aspects of the elements they are made of.

Fire + Frost = Water
Gives you an ability to cast tidal waves, water streams, geyser and such.
Trademark of this would be disable (this is aspect from frost; even though it doesn't freeze them, it will disable them by knocking them out and tossing them around) and would deal great damage (this is aspect of fire; the damage would be greater compared to that of it's components)

Fire + Shock = Light
Would allow you to cast spells of pure light and use them to scorch your enemies, health, magicka (and maybe even fatigue) and would burn them by great bunch.
This is because of the two great damaging spells are joined together.

Frost + Shock = Poison
You could create clouds of poison with this spell witch would deal damage overtime, but would deal damage to both fatique and health, while also slowing the affected enemies.
Slow and damage to HP are aspects of frost and further improving damage is aspect of shock.
Fatigue damage is also aspect of shock, but changed from magicka to fatigue so there is some difference between light element and poison element and therefore giving it more options to use your spells.

All the number should be balanced of course. :P

What would happen if you mix two conjuration spells, i mean two of the same type, which has already been confirmed you can do? I hope its not something lazy like a Increase in duration or something like that.

Fire and ice = So cold it burns? No.
Fire and ice = Frozen but burning? No.

Honestly, I don't see how it could work with that example without being totally moronic.

fire + frost = fire melts the frost part of the spell and enemy gets hit with what is essentially a water-balloon.

shock + frost = the lighting on your hands melts your frost spell and you end up electrocuting yourself

shock + fire= i could actually see this one working with the shock spell being the fastest temprorily stunning the opponent and then the fire burns on them.

im not sure what the spell "work" will do but i imagine it would send certain enemies to do a job instead of attack you, maybe even work to help you (if you have any guesses on what work will do i would like the input) so combine work and sleep and you get a sleepwalker lol that would be entertaining to play with

I like all but the poison idea, the light and water ideas were great thought very conventional of the those two spells coming together and also a very entertaining idea, frost and shock should have more force to it with added stat effects (just my opinion)

Oh and their is the issue of perm. stat boosting with combined spells but in skyrim with the new perk system it will mean less to stat boosters because they dont recieve the perk without level up (like in morrowind, which would be more fun on the new TES creation engine with much faster ingame loading without stopping). I look forward to messing with combos and creating new abilities if they go through with spell combining, an i also look forward to exploiting any combine spell flaws that work to my advantage. Come on bethesda come through and make the RPG of everyones dreams!

Well, I really don't have idea of what to put there instead of poison.
I've tried to go with darkness or shadows (witch I simply adore and had some awesome spell ideas for it), but can't fit it in no matter what.
For now only one that could replace poison is acid in my opinion.
It would deal damage to target(s) and will make their equipment rot little by little.

I'm personally not.
I think that this new system has much more potential and that spell making should return only in case they find a really good idea of how to do it.

Mixing one, or two spell effects together in this new system doesnt even scratch the surface of the depth in spell creation (assuming it is out). There's absolutely no reason to not have spell creation. Spell creation or bust.

Even if they do something with dual weild spells, having to cast 4 seperate spells for a similar effect to what you could get from one cast in previous TES games will svck.

4?

As much as I understood how spells works (correct me if I'm wrong) is that you equip a spell in each hand (we'll say that fire is in right one and shock is in left one, also this is in pure spell user caster scenario) and then, by clicking a left hand key, you cast a lighting bolt, by holding it, you shock enemies in front of you with lighting storm (don't know what command is used to place runes tho).
Anyway, same is with your right (fire) hand, only spells would be fire ones.
Now, if you had fire in both of your hands, when you use both hands at the same time, you should be able to use fire, but with greater effect, but in this case where you have shock in your left and fire in your right hand, when you click both hand keys at the same time, you will cast light spells instead.
Click for casting a bolt of light, hold it for casting a light beam and ? (like I said, I don't know what you have to do in order to create a rune spell) for creating a rune that will make a burst of light when enemies approach it.
Light element would be an advanced element and therefore really strong (awesome damage that will deal both fire and lighting type damage; unless they make special resistances for it; and will also burn mana).
It's great effects are balanced by you having to be good at fire and shock in order to cast it.

Also, that would mean that you would have to cast two spells to get a third effect and not 4.
