MMH Mod Collection -- 5000+ Mods

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 4:54 pm

Do you know about http://modhistory.fliggerty.com

We have collected over 5000 mods that are generally not available anywhere else. These are older plugins, previous versions of some, vast collections from now-defunct modding sites. We really have some incredible and lesser-known gems!

A major upcoming change is that we will soon have a dedicated domain, and a semi-dedicated server!

I have thought about burning all these mods on a set of DVDs and offer them for sale to the community at the cost of the DVDs, the shipping, and maybe $1-$2 extra to help offset the cost of the domain and website hosting. I don't anticipate making much money at all from this, I would really only expect to sell a handful of them. My concern is that I don't quite know how this jives with the concept of not selling mods commercially. I don't think this constitutes a commercial venture in any way, though some may disagree. And as always, I don't want to do anything to offend any of the modders who have created these treasures we have been entrusted with.

So I am hoping to get some feedback on this from the community; see if anybody would find this to be a worthwhile venture.

Thanks for all you do here!

I probably wouldn't use it, but then I have no money and live 3+ thousand miles away

I wouldn't have a problem with you selling them for x given the following
  • You made a torrent available of the mods making up the dvd. Maybe not necessary but it enabled people to burn there own. (So you are not selling anything)
  • You made it clear that x usd were being added to cover p&p, and y usd went towards the handling fee/whatever*.

Similar as to how you can buy Linux distro disks, in the knowlege that x amount of what you payed goes towards the site

*I am not sure if you can have a required donation. I am not sure if I agree with charging for anything other than p&p + costs. It is not that it is a bad idea in this case, but it sets a precedent that could be used where it is a bad idea.
I am happy with the idea of p&p and disk/time costs. A re branded donation :P

I am fairly sure it isn't the first time people have distributed disks of mods for the cost of p&p. You would have to ask some 03, 04 people.

I may post again when I am sober ;)

EDIT:
Is there any way you can have an optional donation. Say you have $1-$2 disk/time costs + P&P. Then have an optional donation checkbox as well, allowing people to donate if they want to.

offer them for sale to the community

Fligg, you know we can't sell mods.

But a collection with a shiny cover and DVD for free, where you could pay a friend for shipping..well..maybe.

You can ask for a donation to off set the cost of running a web site. A thank you gift for a donate can be the dics. So it's not really for sell.

I don't really see it as selling mods, just selling the DVDs that I am putting them on.

I do like Yacoby's torrent idea though. The way it works for Linux distros is fantastic, a method that I would like to emulate.

The more I think about it, the more the "PBS" method that skydye suggested works for me. :hehe: I just shot a PM to GStaff, we'll see what he has to say about it.

Donations to off set costs of a web site or domain was approved long ago. I can't see them changing that now. Plus Gstaff was married a little while ago. So this my be a great time to hit him up for things we never thought would pass. :twirl:

I just looked through the mods listed under the weapons section. I was looking to see if you had a copy of Ebony Weapons Enhancer by Ghostnull. his three weapons enhancers (glass, daedric and ebony) have pretty much fallen off of the web and now daedric and glass are listed only at ElricM (that I could find). I've a copy of Ebony Weapons Enhancer if you want to add it to your database to prevent its loss.

Yes please, that would be great. You can register there and submit mods to be included in the archive.

I'd probably tell you to just put it in the weapons category.

:hehe: Let's see, we have nearly 17gb of mods right now. So we'd have to go with 32gb drives....

Or some really serious compression tool - still a key would be more cool than juggling a bunch of discs and cheaper in postage

It would seem that gamesas is of the opinion that this may set a bad precedent...start the whole "give a mouse a crumb and he takes the whole cookie" trend. I can understand and respect that, so this is one idea of mine that is perhaps best left behind in the idea phase.
