MMM RC 5.0 CTD

Post » Sat Mar 12, 2011 12:20 pm

Hey guys! I'm having a problem with Mart's Mutant Mod (an excellent mod, btw. Kudos, Martigen :)). Any time I approach the capitol building from the plaza, the game instantly CTD's. I disabled every mod until I found it was MMM that was causing it. I disabled every mod except MMM and the DLC and I still CTD.
I tried the minimum (Fallout3.esm, Mart's Mutant Mod.esm, and Mart's Mutant Mod.esp in that order) and still no luck :(. Right now everyother mod is enabled with no problems. How do I get MMM to work? It seems to be only the Capitol Building giving me trouble, though I haven't visited the entire wasteland yet, MMM works fine anywhere else.

I'll post my load order and my dxdiag in the hope that they'll be of some use:

I had a similar problem once when approaching the Sniper Hut close to Rockbreakers Last Gas.
It seemed to be linked to Mutants somehow (or at least there have only been mutants around).

What seemed to work somehow for me was doing a clean save without MMM, switching it back on and letting the cells reset by resting.
You can find the procedure for doing a clean save in Marts readme.
Had you installed an older version of MMM prior to v5?

You may wish to "shorthand the process"
--save, quit
--uncheck MMM
--reload , save, do a couple things, save
--recheck MMM
--reload and see what happens
--if still CTD then do all the wait 3- 4 day MMM clean save instructions

Thanks, El Zoido! The clean save thing worked perfectly! I loaded up the save from before it crashes and I CTD but when I load the "clean" save and walk toward the Capitol building, the game doesn't crash even with all mods active. Thanks a lot!

I still don't know what causes these. Maybe it's one particular creature (and it be very hard to debug as there are hundreds of entries to go through), or a problem with a single mesh (again hard to track down), or maybe it's just the engine after a lot of data is accumulated in the save. The fact a clean-save works implies it could be the latter, but Kal Hohiro has made a patch somewhere that disables some of MMM's scripting features and apparently provides more stability (with is another possibilitiy -- the engine isn't handling what it's supposed to do and it's not something we can necessarily fix). I don't know what features are disabled, you may lose some MMM features, but if CTDs happen often it's one option. If they only happen every now and then, doing a clean-save every now and then is one solution too.

I was messing around with it a lot and like I said somewhere I don't think the fault is with MMM perse, but rather with the Fallout scripting engine.
For example at one point I had your Deathclaw launcher fix causing CTDs in a certain area, disabling the script fixes it.

The patch Martigen mentions can be downloaded http://fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=7565(it says it's for Arwen's mod but you can actually use it without it, it only needs MMM). But a cell reset will usually also fix any CTDs caused by this.

Ah, I wonder if that's one or the major cause. Unfortunately it's the lesser of two evils -- I tried *many* fixes to prevent deathclaws (and Deathclaw based creatures, like Geckos) from launching into the air (a vanilla bug with the original game, for those unware). The one that finally worked was to set the Z-axis of a launched creature to below the terrain level. Fortunately what the engine does is realise this is below the terrain and instead deposits them at the level of the terrain, which is great because it fixes them no matter what height (due to slopes or location) the creature is. At the same time, I wouldn't be surprised if trying to give actors negative Z-axis values out of a paritcular range also wouldn't cause the engine to have a fit sometimes. If this is the case, the fix may be made more stable by using a lower (or, actually, higher) Z-axis value, just as long as it's below 'water level'.
