EDIT: I do like Trademark's view on things, very well put.

Thanks. I hope Hex Off feels the same way as well after reading it.

I think that requiring users to read the readme while it was a good idea kinda made all the impolite and rude individuals go for the rudeness prize... but even so I think that UV by its popularity and complexity would have still gotten a nasty quantity of spam... though that one you had to report to the cops really surprised me... I mean what could the idiot that sent that have thought you'd do: a) report to cops B) delete and block as spam for ever c)be an idiot and enjoy it... now not really seeing the potential advantage to that idiot of sending it... However I do think they are a minority... Many of us really do appreciate everything you've put into UV.

I even got killed once by that little thing... I'd changed the line in the ini when I installed it when I was betatesting it, then when I installed RC1 I forgot... wasted me almost 30s waah... oh I mean that is so much time compared to the enjoyment I've gotten out of it which is dozens of hours.... If it had a random chance of killing me (say 10%) on load I'd still run it for the other 90% of the time when it gives so much fun. I really hope you don't pull it to request only but if you do I'll be requesting it as soon as you got the next version doneish.

Trademark: Nice work, a bit more informing than just RTFM. If I may I'd like to cite you on that. :goodjob:

Thanks folks. I just seem to be having a bad day. Woke up with a headache and the spam annoyed me more than is usual. I appreciate all your comments - you really have made me feel a lot better.

As kyoma said - yes you can just ignore things, or block the users but you still have to read them to know to delete them. And anyonoe who's recieved a continuous stream of hate (or moderated a forum) knows that people just make multiple accounts to carry on.

I'm meticulous about user support. I check my messages/forums everyday to ensure I can help anybody having difficulty, but sorting out the legitimate comments from the hate still requires me to read them all. I'd take bg's suggestion and just block comments, but the truth is there are a lot of legitimate requests for help. UV's not the simplest of mods and some users need more hand holding than others. I don't mind giving up my time to help people enjoy the mod.

I do however resent giving up my time to read threats. Most of the time it really doesn't bother me, but I'm prone to depression from time to time and if i'm caught on a bad day it does hurt and I consider demarbelising. Mostly I started this thread to drag my mental state back to a willingness to keep on working on this and other mods. Your messages have helped to do that so thanks to all of you.

Suffice to say UV RC2 is back on the menu for now. Watch this space :)

That's good to hear. Like so many have already said, don't let the hate get to you. It's been said that, in business, 95% of your problems are caused by 5% of your customers, so don't ever think the haters are a majority. It's well known that those who have the least to say, say it the loudest. Serously, UV has been out for less than six months and it's already had over 48,000 downloads. That says a lot more than a bunch of ignorant, hate spewing, infantile nobodies could ever hope to. Keep up the awesome work!

I actually thought it was absolute genius to basically have a RTFM message incorporated into your game... Not sure why people would [censored] and moan about it. If they don't want to read important material they're given by the mod author, they should not be eligible to download any form of mod whatsoever. Simple as that.

But yeah Hex, ignore them. Your work doesn't deserve this kind of crap. The level of ignorance of some people just awes me sometimes...
Definitely keep up your work and don't let these jerks belittle you, 'cause you've got some(Okay, a lot of) talent!

I'm sorry, I laughed when I read those. Take them with a grain of salt and remember that not everybody who tries out your mods is going to be somebody capable of behaving in a reasonably mature manner. Just smile and nod, file it away for future cheap laughs at their expense, and otherwise ignore it. The fact that they can't appreciate the delicious irony of it all is their problem, not yours. Don't let a handful of children with a severe entitlement complex get under your skin because they are disproportionately upset with a piece of work you made available to them for free.

You actually have a script in your mod that will kill your player for not acknowledging that they have read the readme? Frankly, I find it hilarious. If some little kid wants to get all butthurt because he can't follow simple instructions or refuses to take his ritalin beforehand so he can focus for five minutes to properly set up a complex mod he insisted on installing in the first place then let him cry it out. Parents are told to let babies cry it out as long as they aren't sick, hungry, dirty, or genuinely lonely in order to learn self-soothing and coping techniques. I'm guessing these kids' parents just couldn't bear to let them learn this most basic principle during infancy and look where it's brought them.

Internet bullies are hardly worth the time. I've always dealt with the ruder internet crowds with a smile and a nod, secure in the knowledge that if they really wanted trouble they'd hunt me down and boy would they ever find it. Just get a cheap laugh out of the experience because it really is trivial, pass them some condescending, soothing remark, and then ignore them. :)

Yeah, don't let those little turds get you down. Dingleberries stick for a while, but eventually they fall off. :shifty:

And if they don't fall off, they are of the runny and hard to wipe away kind....they smell bad, but the residue is on them and not you, so everything is still ok.

I plan to use your UV mod whenever I start to play Oblivion, for real, for the first time. Modding has taken big hold of me for now, though.

Koniption

EDIT: Lol! I love what I wrote just now...I'm gonna make it my sig somewhere.

I sense a major hate thread here.

I personally don't use UV because even when I did read the readme and did all that was said to do it still insulted, and then killed me. Then Hex accused me of a troll rating when I rated it like a 5-8 for "good idea, however buggy (told my problem)"

I may try the mod later, but that really put me off.

Your mod is ingenious hex, but you gotta understand, you can't just stereotype and then insult people like that. That goes to all you others here too.

The only reason they're acting so tough is because they're staring at a computer screen. Don't let it get to you, your mods are simply spectacular, and if these people haven't got the intellect to RTFM (read the # readme), then they don't deserve to use your mods.

@Nighthawk0110 - I personally don't use the mod. It looks amazing, but I've never actually got round to installing it. People don't have to like it, that's fine, as everyone has their own opinion. But reacting and threatening the mod author like those people do is completely and utterly unacceptable.

I agree with you Ddraiggoch, however it seems most people here are just stereotyping anyone who can't get the mod to work as a idiot, which is wrong.

Anyway I think I will look UV up again and try to install it now that I have been reminded of it now...

There's another really easy solution: make and release mods that no-one has any interest in.

Hey, you talking about me? Yes I find thats the best way to stay under the radar. Its worked well for 'me' so far.

On subject:

Hex I support you 1000% with the understanding that you have a major mod with high exposure that radically alters gameplay. I hate to say its expected but you are going to get both lovers and haters. I would perfer that you didn't punish your supporters by pulling your work. Pulling your work does NOT punish the critics it gives them control over you.

Nighthawk. I apologise for having your rating removed. However this was largely due to flaws in the nexus rating system (which have now been addressed for better or worse). It was the simple fact that just one low rating could make a mod invisible in the listings.

Anyway, I don't lump people who rate the mod poorly as idiots, or people that get their characters killed as idiots. The people I consider idiots are those that send me abuse like that described in the OP. That stuff is unnecessary and hurtful, and in the case of the stuff that required me to call the police both disgusting and frankly a little scary.

The simple fact of the matter is that if the mod killed you then you didn't read the readme - at least not all of it. The bugs in RC1 of which i'll be the first to admit there are many, are largely covered in the FAQ, but the mod killing you is not a bug - and it's there to stop incorrect installations damaging your saved game. It might not look like it but it's actually there for your own good.

I'm aware of the misanthropic content of the message, and its been changed for the update.

Anyway this thread wasn't about that - it was just my need to vent for a bit about all the threats and genuine hate-mail i get over the mod.

I hope you get it working and enjoy it this time around.

The way I see it, two types of people are sending you hate mail:
1. Impatient people who want to use the mod without reading anything. And then they start the game up and your mod kills their character and insults them. Hardly surprising that some might get angry.
2. Trolls who just want attention. Guess what this thread gives them?

I have a hard time feeling sympathetic when you encourage this sort of behaviour.

Also consider that you shouldn't rate a mod down unless you absolutely cannot get it working. I don't know what happened with you and him, but also consider that maybe that was the day he got another death threat over his mod, and reading your comment of a 5 rating and can't get it working. Ask about it, google it before you rate it. How is it people get offended when they get killed by this mod? It's freaking hilarious! How thin is your skin if you get a pop-up message in Oblivion that says "You didn't read the manual, so.... DEAD!"

You should feel sorry for those losers, actually. Their lives are a waste of time and it always will be, and they are fully conscious of it. This lead to a life of permanent despair and rage that they have to unleash on random people so they could feel better for ten seconds.

After that ten seconds they come back to dwelling in their unending despair.

Frankly they are nothing and never will be, so ignore them.

Maybe they do the unnecessary because you made a mod called "Unnecessary Violence"?? eh? eh? Sorry, maybe you're not in the mood for joking.

Honestly though, I haven't complimented your work yet, but it really is awesome work you've done, and I've been anxiously awaiting the next version of the mod. We've seen some who have pushed modders over the edge and forced them into hiding... such a shame. Hope we continue to see your amazing work here though.

This may very well be a slight issue. An example: When I install Realistic Fatigue the owner of the Inn of Ill Omen gets set to 0.9/1 Fatigue. It's clearly a mod conflict, as the mod should not be affecting him in this way, however disabling the mod restores him to normal. I've read the readme and did my own troubleshoot. The author was polite and helpful. Just because I can't get the mod to work flawlessly doesn't mean I didn't read the documentation or try to resolve it myself. I'd hope that everybody else understands that some of us do try to resolve the problems ourselves, and usually rereading the readme does just that when we find something we missed the first time. Asking for help for a buggy install doesn't necessarily mean you didn't read the readme, all it means is you missed that particular piece of information. Some readme files will not display properly. The All Natural weather plugin, for example, appears as one giant block of unspaced, unparagraphed text. I'd go so far as to say it's virtually impossible to read it, on my computer at least, without missing lines and therefore potentially large chunks of important information. Coincidentally, I cannot get the scripted weather to work, and cannot be bothered to read that readme because of the state it is in, so I don't use the mod. Doesn't make me lazy, doesn't make me stupid, all it means is the readme is formatted strangely and a major eye strain to read. Thank you for bringing up this point. :)

How is it people get offended when they get killed by this mod? It's freaking hilarious! How thin is your skin if you get a pop-up message in Oblivion that says "You didn't read the manual, so.... DEAD!"

Maybe they play with that mod that permanently kills your character when you die. Can't load previous saves, etc. That'd be hilarious.

Thanks for the nice response Hex, most modders would have simply told me to screw off heh. Anyway I feel your pain with the truly insane people on the internet, my advice is to ignore it and look for the good in everything, but you already knew that.
