MMO mentality ...

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 6:30 am

I don't see that as a trolling... it's just a human pychological feature, manifested either in the real world, or a fantasy world (on own daydreams, or nowadays mostly on videogames). Someone who heavily TRAINED (not just raised playing) smithing, enchanting, alchemy, etc. has that show-off spirit, either for an MMO community on other games, or for the NPCs on a singleplayer game like this one, to feel like a god and to enjoy being the most powerful being over the world.

I have no problem with that. The problem comes when these players pretend to claim that the game is "broken" because the game isn't a challenge anymore.

But you have to admit that Skyrim has much more problems, besides very unbalanced gameplay.

While it is obvious that Skyrim is a single-player game, I still think there should be balance. Saying it's a single-player game is not a valid reason to skip balance.
"Oh noes I leveled smithing, enchanting and alchemy to 100 and perked them all now I have 6000 deeps and kill dragunz in 1 hit on master FIX THE GAME"

Yoyu don't actually need any perks at all in any of those.. But I know you are being sarcastic and I say yes, fix the game. Smite the bugs and exploits. Just because it's a single-player game doesn't mean it should be unbalanced.

But, even if they fix the infinite loop that you mentioned, there's still quite a lot of balance issues that needs to be dealt with, imo.

This is a single player game,

This seems to be the number 1 argument of people who cannot think of valid ones.

Just because it is a single player game, doesn't mean you can throw balance and exploits out the windows. That is very poor game design.

Anyone with a shred of intelligence can see that some things in the game are not meant to be.

Lets take a look at how blacksmithing is too easy to level.
Alchemy, another crafting profession, is very hard to level. How then can you say blacksmithing is intended to be so easy to level?
Training for skills at higher levels can cost over 2000 gold per session. How then can you say it is normal for blacksmithing to cost only a fraction of that amount by crafting iron daggers?
There are actually diminishing returns for IMPROVING iron daggers. It won't increase blacksmithing as much as improving dwarven daggers. How then can you say it is normal for crafting iron daggers to increase blacksmithing as much as crafting dwarven daggers?

Lets take a look at the poor balance of loot.
Though using alchemy/enchanting/blacksmithing exploits, one can craft powerful gear that dwarfs naturally occuring loot like artifacts and daedra lord rewards. How can you say it is normal, if the loot created by the game are no where near the power?

And the number one counter-argument is? Oh, it is a single player game. Yes, lets ignore logic completely and repeatedly say that it a single-player game. Somehow it convinces people that they are right.

Funny how someone like me who presents arguments using valid points, is now accused of having "MMO mentality", supposedly a negative term, while people like the OP are considered "cool".

Because of MMO players by local quicky mart won't have any nachos. They are always bought by MMO nerds who eat only nachos. I blame nacho shortness and world hunger on MMO players. :flamethrower:

i agree... "NERF ENCHANTING..., ENCHANTERS AND SMITHS HAVE "UNFAIR ADVANTAGES".... herp derp" "MAGES TOO OVERPOWERED....

who gives a [censored] in a single player game

Anyone looking for a challenging and immersive game... Many single player games get this right. Skyrim does not.

Honestly if you can't turn on the hardest difficulty and actually be pushed to your limits then either you're ridiculously good gamer or the developers have wasted a great deal of time making various difficulties. In this case they have both expert and master difficulties above "normal" adept mode... they obviously intended it to be challenging. Then they turn around and add things that are stupidly OP so the result is basically this: encounter some challenging fights, find ways to improve... realize the game is now trivial. That's called bad game design. Trying to blame the player because they were actively trying to better themselves within the confines of the game without exploiting(no smithing and enchanting is not exploiting) is simply asinine remarks from [censored] who have their heads rammed up Bethesda's collective asses.

Balance does not exist solely for multiplayer. In multiplayer games it's important to ensure fairness. In single player it's important for challenge and immersion. If you want to get an idea of what I mean go play mount and blade warband on hardest difficulty(full damage etc). It's an incredibly good game and incredibly challenging to the point you are always trying to make yourself better, not only in your character but your personal skill and even if you push yourself to the limit you will still be challenged and that makes over coming those obstacles a lot more satisfying.

My issue is this. I don't feel I'm rushing through the game. I brought this concept up with someone else:

Would you rather chose a quest with an intriguing storyline or would you rather chose a quest with no storyline?

My example is the Dark Brotherhood. I much rather enjoyed the main quest storylines over, go kill this person, go kill this, go kill that. With nothing. It's the same task over and over again. I don't think I rushed through the game or the factions, I was more intrigued by the story then "hey go collect me some flowers because I'm tired pertty prease with a cherry on top".

I love all these people blaming everything on MMOs and particularly WoW while at the same time admitting and proving that they don't even have idea what MMOs are, how they work, what type of things originate from MMO or just plain old RPG and mostly lumping all the millions of players ever played an MMO as similar annoying robots instead of excellent smart individuals like the ones who have played TES games before they were even born.

Carry on :)

Your problem (and I don't mean you specifically, just you brought it up) is that for some people playing certain types of characters, Master level if perfectly good for a challenge. There was a thread about how Master was weak awhile back and far too many people agreed they should boost it. However good that might be for you or others, that would destroy the game for me and others. When a lot of people talk about balance, they don't actually want balance, they want to be catered to. That doesn't work. That's not balance. If you want balance, you have to give us both what we want. For me, everything is fine as is. Now balance it so it stays that way for me, and helps you. That would be balance.

If you're on PC, there will be mods that will boost how hard the game is, there are already some out that do this in a "quick-fix" way for people who think it's too easy. That's awesome, because now you can get what you want, and I can keep my game the way it is. We both won. Unless you have a console. Then I guess maybe you can just hold your breath and see if Bethesda will add another difficulty or something, lol.

could you imagine having to spend hours smithing, just to get some basic advantages? MMO style crafting is one of the most tedious gaming conventions ever!
These elitist who spend 100+ hrs in a game they dont like, just want to show off to us "lower gamers" that they can do something we dont have the time to do.

Thats why theyre upset. this isnt an MMO where you get to show off how long you did some tedious task. We dont marvel at your ability to get 100 smithing on a lvl 5 character.

You can find critical people and brown-nosers both on forums.

It's up to Bethesda to decide who belongs where.

You can hate on "whiners" all you want but ultimately you have their critique and bethesda's judgment to thank for a better game the next time around.

So please, next time you have a thought..just let it go ;-)

Yes Dradiin, i am also afflicted by the numbers of players asking for "fix", "nerf" or "balance" in a friggin' single player game where only their own actions have an impact on their own gameplay.
But it is a trend, more and more people can't act on their own, they have to be assisted or supported as much as possible and in the end just asking to be restrained.

There also seems to be this odd obsession with master difficulty pervading the forum. I don't remember this much "playing on master" braggadocio going on with Oblivion, New Vegas, Fallout 3 or Morrowind. It reminds me of the multiplayer mentality in Red Dead and Dark Souls.

That's not really surprising considering this game is pretty easy even on master when you're 50+
I guess people just expected a challenge, it's called master ...

You're seeing alot of this for skyrim because its happening by mistake and more often than the other games.

Yes, its very easy to break and trivialize this game. Nomrally taking sneak and getting gloves that nearly everyone (or archery) isn't hard.

i actually was a full time WoW player for 6 years, and absolutely live to min/max in the games i play, but i also agree with you. forum whining has been a trait shared on the forums of every game i've played (and used the game's forum for), and it has really, literally changed my view of the average person. people are really, really stupid, or at least your average gamer is.

i loved playing skyrim on master and having to deal with npc casters that could kill me in one hit, and i enjoy my one handed axe that i've crafted legitimately to deal 235 damage. now i one shot stuff, and have 1005 armor, and some people complain about that, despite the fact that i've cheated in no way. people are never satisfied, and will complain if it's possible. the game is too easy, the game is too hard, my [censored] is too short and so i yell at people online...

i really do hate noobs, but what i hate even more is the incessant whining about any and every facet of gameplay imaginable, for any game there is. forums make my eyes bleed, though i do still browse them from time to time...
maybe i'm part of the vegetable-IQ masses as well...

p.s. i saw someone mention having 30 mods (gasp) installed. i'm currently running 73 unique mods (all texture packs though, nothing that alters gameplay in any way). i hope i just blew that person's mind, giggle.

The game does feel like an MMO to me, a way more immersive one, but ultimately it all comes down to saying Yay or Nay all the time. Go to place X and return it to designated NPC. Guild quests and deadric questing does let the world feel more alive, but there is most of the time no other way to tackle such a quest. Freedom of choice is severely overrated in this game.

Is it just me or has Skyrim been invaded by MMO whiners ?

The type of MMO player who tears through content in hours and days instead of weeks and months, and then complains of being bored. The player who sends private messages to others in a raid/group explaining how crappy there current gear and specialization is. The player who requires others to have 30 different 3rd party mods or he will [censored] and moan incessantly about someone without it.

I see post after post with this kind of thinking, where they min/max everything, play the game on master, and then complain about it being too easy and how it svcks.

This is a single player game, no one cares what you do in the game except yourself, no one is forcing anyone to make oneself in game Uber and Overpowered, yet there are countless people complaining about doing just this, others probably use tons of console commands and cheat then complain about it being too easy on Master. Like the guy who posted about how easy the game is once he has 30x sneak damage and 2 Blades of Woe equipped.

I dunno i guess i just hate to think that the next Elder Scrolls game might be influenced by this type of player's mentality.

Anyone else agree that Skyrim has been invaded by the WoW mentality gamer ? Or am i off the mark here and need to go re-new my Prozac prescription ?

cant aggree more. reading this forum makes me wanna puke sometimes. its totally pathetic how pps are whining about "imbalance" and to "easy" while they exploiting crafting and enchanting to the max

I definitely think there's been a large influx of MMO players to these boards lately. I'm almost positive terms like "sword and board" are from WoW, but that's mostly conjecture since I don't play that kiddy garbage.

More like EQ, but that was when MMOs weren't for your typical high school dropouts like WoW. Ultimately though the message they convey about something being broken or in need of nerfs isn't wholly bad, they just have no clue on any other way to approach it. Its hardwired that they must abuse it and roleplaying is just something they associated with the Goldshire Inn on Moon Guard.

Looks like bethesda have taken the mmo mentality too, they said they will take a look at exploits and balance in one of the patches.

What does that have to do with MMO-mentality? They just try to make the game enjoyable for everybody with whatever perks they like to take.

I really don't see what's so wrong with a bit of competitive attitude, you want to be a mighty Dragonborn, so you look for the best possible equippement. Also for hardcoe-rpers, they want to have an armor with a somewhat background. And btw, you don't need to take part in all this as it is as the OP said a single-player game. Besides what kind of stats you want to compare? There is only armor value :P I for example like to plan my charakters, thats why i got the Buff from the Warrior Stone, got a smithing set with Grandsoulgem enchanted +Blacksmithing and a Philter of Blacksmithing to get the best possible result of armor. If you dont like that kind of playing, simply don't do it noone forces you.

Besides you all rage at WoW, it seems to be cool these days to simply despise everything which has to do with WoW completely ignoring that the game was a masterpiece, some will call me a WoW-really devoted fan now but you know that i am right noone can deny that fact.

Then ppl claim to play Skyrim for the story and to rp...What story i ask? The story is completely ridicouleous, believe me, i write better stories if you want proof i can send you a little part of the books i've written. To RPing? There is hardly any possible interaction with NPCs besides accept quest which usually results in going into a cave for some lower citizen...

A game is what the players make out of it, if you want to rp, do it; if you want to get best possible gear, get it; if you want to compete by seeing how far you get with "dead is dead", simply do it...

People are so ignorant, they always think their way is the right one...

I think you're wrong. I think certain people play on master just to brag on the forums. In a single player game what difference does it make how powerful you are? No one else can see you or play with you. Nobody really cares what level you play on. I don't. What I do care about is having Bethesda ruin my game by "tweaking", "balancing" or adding newer difficulty levels just to satisfy some adolescent notion that playing on a higher difficulty makes you a superior player. You not only see that on these forums but you also see those who brag about how much time they've played. Acting as though their opinions are for some reason more valid than all others because they've played 200+ hours. It's definately an MMO mentality. Goto to any MMO forum. First thing you'll see are threads asking how to be the best with the best gear. Later on you'll see those same players complaining about how easy the game is and how bored they are. That's what happens here.
