MMO Setting

Post » Thu Mar 13, 2014 7:35 pm

So, I was thinking tonight (while I am having trouble sleeping and having a small sherry to pretend I have class) that for a lot of people a massive selling point for TESO was the Elder Scrolls setting and that a lot of MMOs (Star Wars, Star Trek, DCUO, Final Fantasy, World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings etc.) have taken advantage of a popular franchise in order to draw in more customers. To that end I pose the following question to you my friends;

If you could create MMOs out of 3 book/movie/game/comic/whatever franchises, what would your top 3 be and why?

For my 3 choices, I choose:

1) Adventure Time. I have no idea how this would work, but if I could explore any realm, it would be Ooo.

2) The X Files. An MMO based less on typical combat and more on investigation, stealth and discovery (of course there could always be a bounty hunter type archetype).

3) Arcanum. Absolutely loved that game years ago and still do. The whole magic-technology thing was dealt with really well and the world itself was beautifully fleshed out in my opinion. Would make a fantastic MMO world to me.

X-files sound kinda fun... A lot like TSW maybe?

For my own ideas I could see

1) Legend of the Seeker

2) Something western-y ... Like Jonah Hex

3) Something stone age-y (wooly mammoth raid boss!)

1, the banned and the banished book series. Written by james clemens. Amazing well written books with rich lore and characters. Also quite easy to make lots of classes etc. Read it to understand, i promise you wont regret! 2nd most favorite book series after lotr (whixh already has an mmo).

2, fallout online, for obvious reasons.

3, getting a bit harder since most things i think of can't really be done or are downright boring in mmo version. But im going to say..... the godslayer chronicles book series, also by james clemens.

Damn you Dante, you beat me to Game of Thrones. I'm still using it though!

  1. Game of Thrones - I love the dark, political and advlt themes. I think it's the truest depiction of fantasy realism; if there is such a thing.
  2. 300 - Counter to the realism of my other two choices, I love 300 for it's highly modern and stylised feel. The cinematic atmosphere and exaggerated combat would lend perfectly to an MMO.
  3. The Witcher - Moody, dark, gritty and high fantasy. I'm sure many people want this franchise made into an MMO.

And Warhammer (but not like Warhammer Online)

And Lord Of The Rings... (but not like Lord Of The Rings Online)....

.....those games....just.... nope.

Do it again.

Or Dungeons and Dragons...... but.... well... you get the idea....

Well there are three that come to mind first.

1. Ringworld series by Larry Niven.

2. The world of Elric of Melnibone' from Stormbringer (and subsequent novels) by Michael Moorcock.

3. Dragon Riders of Pern by Ann McCaffrey.

This list could get very long indeed.
