MMORPG Fallout?

Post » Sun Apr 18, 2010 12:50 pm

 If fallout were to become an mmo wouldn't that kill the whole wasteland theme? if they do make an mmo it would have to be a sequel to fo3 because the storie could be after project purity and mankind is starting to rebuild itself that'll explain the people running around being stupid, as for a plot the purifier might be going ballistic and now everyone is trying to find extra parts and so on. :nothanks:

No, that was the Fallout mmo, being worked on by Interplay. It's future is in doubt follwoing Interplay's apparent failure to fulfill the contract that allowed them the rights to make the mmo. They should have had signs of having made progress by last month, but they hadn't.

As for Fallout 4, that will be single player thankfully.

The MMORPG was shady at best - Interplay was going to mess it up royally anyway so I hope it DOES get canceled for now - Bethesda doesn't really do Multi-Player so I doubt we'll see anything from them about it - however - if enough interest goes into it, I bet we can get Blizzard to sign a deal over for a MMORPG spin off, of course they would have to use their own engine (but that would actually be better in the end, physics and graphics like say Diablo 3 for a fallout mmorpg would be amazing and I would Gladly play $15/month for it- depending on what in game options are available and how well built)

Honestly I think it should be made - but it has to be made right- it has to have that "This is my last clip of ammo and I have 2 days to get home.. and only 3 bottles of water to survive" wasteland feeling - not like the Fallout 3 we have now- where Ammo never seems to run out and clean water/supplies are so abundant that there is no real explanation why cities aren't prospering again. Collecting spare parts, or "scrap metals" to build/advance things would be an excellent addition for an Mmo - much like "mining" and other resource gathering in other MMO's - but being Fallout/Wasteland themed- it's more about saluaging and repairing and tinkering then "mining new material"

Honestly... the way "Borderlands" sounds - is amazing to me - if a Fallout MMO doesn't exist and BL turns out they way I hope - the Need will be fulfilled.

The MMORPG is everything but canceled, which doesn't bother me in the slightest. I've always found MMORPGs to be monotonous cycles of grinding and rat races to recover the coolest loot before everyone else.

a fallout mmo could be fun - wouldnt it be cool if each "realm" or wasteland only housed 25 active accounts? there would still be a desolate vibe, but you could interact with real PCs if you happen to run into them while you are playing. that would be pretty awesome - you could team up as you wish, PK people, cooperation would actually mean something and it wouldnt just be a giant group raiding stuff for items like WoW. I HATE WoW.

Fallout 4 will not be a MMORPG. There might be a Fallout MMORPG depending on how the situation between Bethesda and Interplay will develop, but it will be separate from Fallout 4. See:

there is your fallout MMO, even though it don't say fallout, its pretty dang close, so close that the leveling system is almost a copy of fallout 3.

oh okay. i don't know how they would make it an mmo. it would be nice if they could somehow keep the whole scaveging, "im all alone" feeling.

:obliviongate: I hope bethesda doesn't take the mmo rights from interplay, i think they can do a better job on fallout. then again they might only make it for PC. ( :sadvaultboy: I hope not :sadvaultboy:)

Interplay is working with Masthead Studios, who are developing yet another post-apocalyptic MMO titled Earthrise.

Fallen Earth and Earthrise, in addition to having humorously contrasting names, are both scheduled to be released later this year. If and when V13 gets released (regardless of whether it maintains the Fallout setting) the PA MMO market is going to be pretty full.

Although I'm still confused why Masthead would be working with Interplay on an MMO that would presumably be in competition with Earthrise. I suppose if the two studios combine forces it increases the chance that one of the MMOs will be successful, but it still seems weird.

i heard differently, i heard that they are only holding the rights to fallout being an mmo, and bethesda wants to take those rights, but if they do they have to make it an mmo.

They used to have a lot of Fallout 1 looking buttons and background on their website. They removed them as soon as Beth started FO3.

It's not the franchise that makes a good MMO, it's the ruleset and balance between PvE and PvP, solo and group content, and between classes that counts.

Thats what I said.

Bethesda bought the rights to the franchise, but Interplay were able to license the rights for an MMO as per the agreeement that allowed Bethesda to purchase the rights.

In April, Bethesda moved to rescind the license claiming Interplay had failed to show signs of full scale development despite having had two years to do so (Agreement was that development would begin with 24 months of the agreement date, which was April 2007) Interplay failed to do so and Bethesda has moved to retake the rights as per the agreement, though Interplay disputes this.

To be honest, Interplay is a pale ghost of what it once was. They sold off the rights for both the Fallout and Star Trek series and were at one point evicted. Many of the inhouse studios such as Black Isle were shut down and dissected and the comapny is struggling to show any real signs of life.

Part of it was also funding. The contract said that Interplay must raise a certain amount of funds, however they're 10-K filing showed they had no cash.

Exactly. As of 31st December 2008 Interplay had $0.00.

Masthead I believe is not working directly with Interplay, they are only using the Masthead engine nothing else. But where did/are they getting any form of funding for it? Unless Masthead have also asked for a percentage cut of sales on a live release and further expansions.

To be honest this is becoming a disaster. Bethesda should take back the full IP rights and put the whole thing on the back burner. Save at least a little dignity of a fallout mmo.

Oh well. Even more of a reason to stop it then.

edit: I see now. "only people whose resources are no longer necessary to keep Earthrise on track (due to finishing certain systems or milestones) will be (or have been) moved to the V13 team."

I've been playing the fallout series since fallout 1 was released. Prior to the release of Fallout 3 I spent quite a while playing lord of the rings online (LOTRO). While running around questing in middle earth I couldnt help thinking that fallout would make a excellent MMO series to rival the likes of WOW and LOTRO.

Fallout already has the ingredients to make an MMO and a film trilogy for that matter. In FBOS I assigned each of my team specific roles such as sniper specialist, assault specialist, medic, repair specialist, explosives specialist, etc. In an MMO you could choose a specific class (medic, close assault, ranged assault, sneak based, etc).

You would have to team up with other specialists in order to complete certain epic quests?

MMO is the future! :)

Interestingly, Chris Taylor (lead designer of FO1), who is working on Fallout Online at Interplay (although it's unknown at the moment whether they'll be able to keep the license), previously also worked on LOTRO.

Actually, there is a game I read about that is LIKE Fallout 3, with the game mechanics. There may be a game coming out called Borderlands that apparently shares the same mechannics as fallout 3 but can have 4 player online. This is nothing like a MMORPG, but its a start

An online version of Fallout would be the perfect game in my opinion. I wouldn't necessarily want an MMO with hundreds of people in the world and i wouldn't what the single player experience compromised by including co-op but everytime i play Fallout 3, i wish i could explore the world with a few friends.

imagine stumbling upon the hideout of a clan of raiders (real players) and planning an attack with one of your friends. (e.g. lay a mine field, draw the raiders to it and then have your friend flank them while you snipe from behind the mine field) :foodndrink:
