(Mod Ahoy!) The Dance of the Dragons

Post » Mon Oct 10, 2011 5:33 am

Well I'm in high spirits after a bit of adventuring into the soul and listening to some awesome music on loop for several hours, so I decided I'd stop beating around the bush with this particular thing I've procrastinated over and simply get it out there. I was the one who said a while ago to the one I'm collaborating with (details on the link) that there's no better time to get this project out there than the present. I do believe I am aloud to discuss what this all is, given that the MERP guys were as well, so I do hope you enjoy.

Since you can gather the basic overview from things posted above, I will try and say something a bit more unique than I all ready slated out for the many to see. For those of you unfamiliar with the A Song of Ice and Fire series, the basics of it are a medieval fantasy with some very light mystical elements. Extremely different from Elder Scrolls in a great many ways, but at the same time I heard people comparing Skyrim and Game of Thrones a great deal. There are similarities in some of the overall ideas though I'd hardly go out of the way to claim that anything was directly ripped for inspiration. Skyrim had its own identity just as the books/TV series do, and the distinctions are far more pertinent than the similarities.

If there were basic ideas taken from the background of A Song of Ice and Fire though, it looks much like this particular bout would be it. The similarities here make the mod fit almost perfectly into Skyrim (minus some mystical elements) as one can read in the Wiki page above. The premise of both games is based around a civil war led by two supposed successors to the throne. This is also rather mirrored in (deleted spoilers) :toughninja: but it also pertains to this past event not fully covered in the books as well. Not to mention the dragons, which by the end there was not one left. Many people are saying that Skyrim's huge feature will be dragons and they will not be reused in the future, and I agree. Also I'm extremely thankful they fit perfectly in with the story!

The main idea for the start of the project is going to be massive conservation. I am almost certain that the project can get away by using strictly Skyrim assets, as the visual style I feel is compatible (although not exact) with the Game of Thrones style of architecture and nuance. I plan to have an equal number of cities and towns as Skyrim, but they can be toned down if need be. The reason I am thinking extremely conservatively is because I don't want this project to fall apart, as I have seen many others. This is an idea I feel has a lot of strength behind it, and the spirit that can be unleashed if we unite together for massive pre-planning in the build could be extraordinary. Just giving everyone a reassurance that this is not trying to be ambitious as it may seem, with creating a new world being the biggest focus rather than adding a multitude of features. If features are to be added, I'll be looking out into the modding community for their contributions more than likely.

Now if you look up at the center link at the top, you'll see that you can apply to be a part of the project. You can also message me on this site, but the question is more than likely "Why should I join?". As I said in the last paragraph, this is a project that is a lot less than it may seem. A total conversion is quite a lot in branching out creative avenues, but if it is all pre-planned then it becomes a drastically reduced amount of work. Listen well: I require no one who is in pre-planning to stay through the entire project (although it is appreciated). Should I have to work on this for two years by my lonesome, I shall, but it will be two years shorter than it would be if I was going alone. Joining this project is far less of a commitment than with other mods, and as long as you show skill then you will be credited for your work.

I suppose that's enough for now, then. If you have any questions, feel free to leave them here or message me on wither these forums or moddb. I can't wait to begin tampering with the Creation Kit and begin work on this experience with either a team behind me all the way or just in the back of my mind. Creative minds of all types are welcome to this, and I thank you for reading.

Blessings of the Seven to you! (Not the Nine, the Seven... Okay, the Nine too)

Dude, this sounds awesome. I love Game Of Thrones. I don't have any experience with mods or anything, but I'd love to help in anyway possible. :tops:

That is indeed a design change I've made.

I am excited by all the great modding ideas. At the very least a weapon and armor set of Game of Thrones inspired gear would be great to have too.
