Extracts from the extensive readme:
This is an alpha release. ....
Morrowind Redux is a complete overhaul of Morrowind: The Elder Scrolls 3, in both large and small ways. The primary purpose of the mod is to provide some sorely-lacking balance to various aspects of the game system, as well as make the game itself more challenging than it currently is. This was done through the following measures:
1. alterations to character races and skills to make advancement through use slower for most skills, while faster for a few others (e.g., speechcraft, sneak). Additional changes are included that make it easier for the player to specialize in particular attributes or skills (so now you can play a real mage, or fighter, or thief, right from the get-go).
2. alterations to character classes to force autocalced NPCs to specialize in the skills they're supposed to be good at, as well as the weapons they usually arm themselves with.
3. changing base armor skill to 40 for all characters, to make wearing armor useful for everyone - especially the NPCs that wear armor but have little or no skill in that armor type.
4. alterations in a variety of game settings to reduce the 'superhero' effect that later-game PCs exhibit. For example, falling does markedly more damage and occurs over shorter distances; suffocation under water happens faster; you now fatigue during combat; merchants are more brutal in bargaining; and so forth.
5. a massive and complete overhaul of the magic system to make mage PCs and NPCs more effective in combat, on par with the fighter. All of the magic effects have been changed; some have been eliminated; old Morrowind spells have been tossed and replaced with a couple hundred new ones; starting magicka is higher for both PCs and NPCs; etc. You will find that your mage character is now just as effective as a fighter, and that NPC mages can and will kill you if you simply try to tank your way through every situation.
6. a complete overhaul of the enchantment system, primarily by eliminating most of it (and the cheats that go with it). You have fewer options for enchantment now, and far fewer magical items are in the game. However, every magic item you find will be of use.
7. a reduction in alchemical potion types, as well as a reduction in what can actually be used as ingredients. However, because of other changes in the game potions are now far more useful than they were before.
8. there are no longer any master trainers, with the exception of the various armor types. The highest skill level that anyone will train you to is 80, and some of these trainers will be unavailable unless you join the faction they belong to. Training costs have been radically increased.
9. the amount of gold in the game has been cut dramatically. This has been achieved primarily by reducing the outrageous prices that one could get for various magical items (e.g., daedric weaponry), as well as making the appearance of high-price items less likely.
10. factions are now more 'factional'. While most are willing to sell goods, only a few will provide training unless you happen to be a member. Furthermore, the requirements for joining a faction have been increased, and advancement is *much* more difficult.
11. weapons and armor have undergone a complete overhaul to make each type worthwhile to use and cost-effective, as well as useful to the NPCs that use them.
12. a number of creatures have been 'buffed' (e.g., the various Dagoths), but not overly so. Just enough to make them challenging past level 20.
Many other changes have been incorporated as well. Read the detailed sections below for a list of changes to various aspects of the game.
Because of the nature of this mod it's almost certainly incompatible with many, if not all, of your other favorite mods. Do *not* attempt to run this mod in conjunction with any other mod unless it's listed below; either this mod will break the other, or the other will break this one, or both. This was not a deliberate design decision; it's simply impossible to do what I wanted to do with Morrowind Redux and maintain compatibility. You either get this *or* that.
