mod help for newbie MMM and OOO

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 11:03 am

So I'm about to try again and just did what I thought was a fresh reinstall. I uninstalled the game, obmm and the unofficial patch. The Bethesda folder remained in my program directory after I uninstalled, so I just deleted it. Then rebooted my PC.

Now I come back and install both directs (direct to C drive, no programs directory!) and start the game to generate that ini file. Nothing else is installed at this point. I notice however that reinstall couldn;'t have been clean, though I don';t know what else to do, as it still has a listing of all my previous saved games. I hope it's clean enough, but I'm not sure if I'm doomed now before I start.

Peter ID had a great step by step post that I intend on trying, but it doesn't mention the Unofficial patch. So my questions are...

1 - is the Unofficial Patch required for OOO and MMM?
2 - do I install it before or after obmm?
3 - Can I use the .exe for that unofficial patch or am I required to use obmm for installing it?
4 - Are there any other required patches before I try installing OOO?

Peter said this...

Next you create the omod for OOO 1.33. Make sure you download the OOO_133_Complete.7z file (last file on the Planet Elder Scrolls link).
Now, in OBMM click create button, click Add Archive button, browse to where the downloaded OOO_133_Complete.7z file is, select it.
Don't panic if nothing happens for a minute or two, it is a big file.
The first screen that will pop up is a warning about esp files in subdirectories. Click yes to continue.
The you will be asked to inport omod conversion data. Click yes.
Now the files will appear in the window.
Click Create Omod and wait 5,10, 15 minutes for it to finish.
When done, you now have an omod for OOO 1.33. Double click it to start installation. Choose the full installation since you will install the Beta patch next. Choose options you want (take recommended ones to start with, explanations are in the readme).

But when I double click OOO1.33 in obmm, I get a popup warning me it conflicts with an already installed mod. I've only got the unofficial patch.

Now, start OBMM. First thing to do is enable archive invalidation.
In OBMM click Utilities button, choose archive Invalidation.
BSA redirection should be chosen.
Click Update now. Exit screen.

Next, make sure you downloaded the OOO_134_Beta5_Patch.7z file from the same link as the complete version (it is the fifth file down in the downloads list).
To create omod from this do the following (as above):
Click Create
Click Add Archive
Browse to where the Beta5 file is and select the OOO_134_Beta5_Patch.7z file.
Now since the beta archive dos not have omod conversion data, fill in the block for Name (Call it OOO 1.34 Beta Patch5). Everything else you can leave empty.
Now click create omod.
This one will be quick.
Double click to install (it will overwrite the complete install with the newer files.
Close OBMM.

Here is where you would run BOSS to sort your load order.
To do this browse to the Oblivion\data directory and doubleclick BOSS Update Masterlist.bat to get the latest. Then doublclick BOSS.exe.
When done, start the game and you will have OOO loaded and working.

MMM we can do when you are ready. It is as simple as OOO (just more options :) with all those extra files)

As for Wrye Bash go to this link:
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22368

Dwonload Wrye Python03a file
Download Wrye Bash 291 Installer version.

Run the Wrye Python03a file first.
Then run the Wrye Bash 291 installer.
You probably need to read up on the documentation is you are moving your Oblivion installation dorectory, I have not done this, I install in the default locations, easier for me, but then I don't use UAC in Windows 7.

And, as Thomas Kaira pointed out, check out and read through this guide http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/?page=site_about

OK - I've installed OOO 1.33 using obmm (yeah me!) and even the update 1.34 (yeah me again!). I'm stuck on boss though. The data directory doesn't have any file with the word BOSS in it. I guess my load order will be screwed up without it?

The current load order is...

Oblivion.esm
Oscuro's_Oblivion_Overhaul.esm
Unofficial Oblivion Patch.esp
Knights.esp
DLCShiveringIsles.esp
Living Economy.esp
Harvest [Flora].esp
Harvest [Flora] - Shivering Isles.esp
Living Economy - Items.esp
Cutthroat Merchants.esp
OOO-WaterFish.esp
Oscuro's_Oblivion_Overhaul.esp

Tons of posts from me here but it seems to work as is, thought I do get an error when I exit the game, saying Oblivion is not responding.

Safe to add MMM now? Add it the same way? I guess the concern would be load order.

I see that MMM is significantly different to install and the latest version isn't fully tested.

Just popped online and saw your posts. Godd job to this point, I see you figured most of the stuff out. The BOSS missing is because you need to install it.

Download BOSS from here http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=20516
download the installer version. Read the instructions on the post on how to install.

As for installing MMM now, you can either read the MMM thread or give me a few minutes to get the instructions together. better yet, read the thread and when done look at my instructions. Better yet, again, download and install BOSS while I get the MMM instructions typed out.

MMM is tested fine, it works well
You can ignore the conflict message when installing the omod, you will usually be overwriting files.
Yes, after installing Oblivion install the unofficial patch, installer is fine for now. You will learn how to get the supplemts later, for now everything will work just fine.

1. Download MMM 37b3 Public Release 3 http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=17784
2. Download MMM373BSA.7z http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MWEEEADE
3. Download MMM Divese WaterLife Update http://www.4shared.com/file/170247452/78b4bf8d/MMMDiverseWaterLifeUpdate.html
4. Download "MMM_OMOD_Installer_1_6_1.rar" http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=24646
5. Start OBMM, and click "Create"
6. In the "omod creator" window, click "Add archive" and select "MMM_37b3_Public_Release-17784.7z"
7. Do the same for the other downloaded archives, answering yes to any question.
Note that OBMM will be unresponsive for a long time when adding "MMM373BSA.7z".
8. Click "Create omod" and let OBMM take its time compressing the OMOD. Answer yes to any question about overwriting duplicate files.
9. Install the MMM OMOD by double-clicking it.
10. Answer the pop-ups.
11. Installation is complete!

I copied the above from the omod installation instruction so they should work correctly.

Remember to use BOSS to set your load order before play.

Read the documentation for what options you want, start with only a few for now. The readme is here http://pages.suddenlink.net/corepc/

Easy.

Now, the game may not look different as these do not change landscape and such, but it will be tougher and you will see new enemies and items. The fights will be much harder for low levels so don't be shy and run away when you can. have the enemies chase you to where guards are and have the guards kill them for you :)

Or move the difficulty slider to the left :)

This is a common problem, and it's on the game's side, not yours if that's what you're wondering.

Glad to hear you've figured OOO out. If you're going to go ahead on MMM, be VERY sure you follow the instructions to the letter, as setting up MMM+OOO can get messy if you don't know what you are doing.

There's a pretty simple workaround for that, luckily. It requires OBSE (Oblivion Script Extender), but if you managed to install OOO and MMM successfully, this will be a cakewalk. :D

Here's what you do:
1. Download OBSE: http://obse.silverlock.org/ Use the current stable version (v0019b). You shouldn't need to use the v0020 beta unless you have a mod that requires it, but you can if you want; just remember it might have some bugs and due to it's beta nature, you'll update it more often when new beta versions (and eventually the stable v0020). Otherwise, just get v0019 and wait for v0020 to go final.
2. Install OBSE (taken straight from the included instructions included with v0019; they are the same for the v0020 beta):
The instructions for installing and running OBSE differ based on whether you are using a retail or Steam version of the game.

IF YOU PURCHASED A RETAIL (NON-STEAM) VERSION OF OBLIVION:

1. Copy obse_1_2_416.dll, obse_editor_1_2.dll, and obse_loader.exe to your Oblivion directory. This is usually in your Program Files folder, and should contain files called "Oblivion.exe" and "OblivionLauncher.exe".
2. Run oblivion by running obse_loader.exe from the Oblivion directory.

If you use a desktop shortcut to launch Oblivion normally, just update the shortcut to point to obse_loader.exe instead of oblivion.exe.

IF YOU ARE USING THE STEAM VERSION OF OBLIVION:

1. Copy obse_1_2_416.dll, obse_editor_1_2.dll, and obse_steam_loader.dll to your Oblivion directory. This is usually "C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\common\oblivion".
2. Launch Oblivion via Steam or by running Oblivion.exe. OBSE will automatically be run along with Oblivion when launched. To disable this, rename or move obse_steam_loader.dll. You do not need to use obse_loader.exe unless you are running the editor.
As you can see, now you will launch the game using OBSE_Loader.exe rather than Oblivion.exe. I'd suggest making a shortcut and adding it to your desktop or taskbar for easy access. Or, if you typically launch the game from OBMM, it will automatically detect OBSE is installed and run OBSE_Loader.exe for you.
3. Download FastExit2: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22410 It is what is called an OBSE plug-in; it isn't a mod. Simply put it in the proper folder, and forget about it; it'll do it's job automatically without any further imput or action from you. And it'll cure CTDs on exit.
4. Install FastExit2. There's no readme for this one; just copy the OBSE folder from the archive (it is in the Data folder), and drop it directly into your Data folder. The folder structure should be: Oblivion\Data\OBSE\plugins\FastExit2.dll. In the future, if you get other OBSE plugins (NOT mods that require OBSE, but actual OBSE plugins, such as OBGEx2 or Oblivion Stutter Remover), they will go in the same plugins folder as FastExit2.dll did.

And that's it. No more crashing on exit, and you'll have OBSE already in place if you get a mod that requires it. :) Good luck.

I haven't tried fixing the crash yet..... because..... because.... I'VE BEEN PLAYIN' OBLIVION!!!!!

Looks like MMM and OOO are working fine. At least seemingly so unless I get a surprise crash at some point.

Thanks all, you've been so EXTREMELY helpful. :)

Yeah I know. Just daunting when everything has a read me filled with info that isn't in english, which tells you to get other apps/whatever which also have non-english read-me, which lead to other pages no made for newbies. It's like everything is only made for the already-experience... though I did get some links here that'll help me learn.

Of course, I didn't intend to learn about modding.... I just wanted to play Oblivion with OOO and MMM. I guess to do that, I have to learn. (Sure hope it's worth it!)

That was a rather small violin actually. All the concerned readmes are in English. Glad you got it working. Amazed that people here are willing to hand hold so much.

LOL. "Not in English" means it has terms not understood by someone who is not familiar with them, not the actual language :)

You have to love the English language and all the phrases :)

Still a rather small violin playing IMO. OBMM has a pretty straightforward readme. If wondering how to create an OMOD, why not check it before posting and have someone else spend time writing pretty much the same stuff that is already covered there?

I undestand what you are saying but I still remember how it was when I was starting out (reminded recently trying to install Linux for a project). Unless you understand the terminology and how it relates to everything, it can be frustrating.

Yes, but it's the same terminology. Click the Create button etc. isn't some strange foreign language. But nevermind.

The OP is playing...chuck it up as a success :) If you treat this like a Heldesk, then it is all in a day's work. :foodndrink:

Just thought I'd hit in and give a follow up to yall. The game performs real nice and all, only the occassional crash which I get is normal.

I've really enjoyed playin the game. Lost my dad recently so it takes my mind off and is fun. Thanks again to all who helped with the steps, even if it had to spelled out for me..
